Rear disc conversion!

Postby Stoned on Sat Nov 01, 2003 8:47 pm

Right. Last weekend MadcatCraig came over and brought and fitted rear discs for me. I cannot say thank you enough for this since he worked on my car in utter freezing conditions and never moaned once. The man is a real trooper. He didnt even complain when he ended up having to stay in Pompey overnight due to complications slowing the conversion down.

So big thank you to MC.

He brought his camera with him so I grabbed some random shots. Gave me something to do other than find screwdrivers and make tea for him

Off with the drums!
Image

Random pics of err my car and the tiles on the ground. Arent they nice :)
Image

MC hard at work. That's his Fez on the right. Bloody fast for a 1.4!
Image

Getting there. Notice the fairy cakes wrappers
I couldnt find anything decent to feed him so he lived on tea and cakes for the day lol

Getting there
Image

Looking sweet!
Image

Random pimp shot of the Fez. I cleaned it up especially for his visit.
Image

Moving onto the other side now. Sun is going in.. oh dear. Getting late and no where near done
Image

Craig says at lunchtime when we started 'Fitting the discs will take a couple of hours. Then the handbrake cable maybe another two'
LOL
Let's see if he's right
Image

Oh there is nothing like it. What these pictures do NOT bring accross is the utterly mental cold. It was a frost that night and there he is working in a bloody teeshirt outside. By this time I was concluding it wouldnt be done that evening and was working out where he should stay. Luckily as it turned out his Dad has a house nearby.

The next day.
Result!. Discs and calipers on. Sadly I forgot to take photo's earlier in this process but it's probably just as well for you lot, or it would take you a year to load all the pics
Image

Greenstuff pads. Pity I dont have those on the front yet
Image

A pic MC took
Image

And another he took underneath the car. Not sure why he took this. Perhaps he was pleased he had found something with dirt on it
Image

w00t!
Image

Sweeeet. I got discs!
Image

Already getting dark again. Bloody winter
Image

Another, I'm in the background caught on camera at last lol
Image

There yah go!

Another huge photodiary for you. :Q

Once again thanks to MadcatCraig. He's the dude!

Actually no. It's been compleatly undrivable ever since they were put on

But's thats because the FRST master brake cylinder is hopeless for all round calipers. I'm hoping to upgrade to an Escort brake cylinder this weekend so I shall let you know if there is a difference afterwards.

Cheers

Stoned, throw some soil on that car or something, drive through some mucky puddles, please! thats too clean

imho fiestas arent heavy and dont really need rear disks but they do look nice! and are hardly going to hurt braking

Chris, least you got em on, one thing though, on the passneger rear caliper on the sliding pins, the rubber dust seals are missing, or did you put em on later?

lol Santahul. Glad you do. I jetwashed them all a few weeks before to bring back the colour in them

Mikey well spotted, i'll check that out as there was a rubber seal laying about somewhere.

Sp00n: The green bits are better than the black dust you get with the OE pads mate, that's why I got em. Greenstuff pads are ace for low dust.

Yeah you dont need rear discs at all, I'm not doing this to improve braking, just to make the car look better. In my own opinion you cant have a top car with drums on the back. If VW see fit to put them on the Golf then I reckon the Fez should have them too.
The only problem with the conversion is it has pushed the wheels out 15mm either side so the tyres are hitting the arches again :(

Not at the moment it doesnt!

The rad leaks, the gasket for the thermostat also leaks water. The pipework doesnt quite fit and i'm throughly pissed off with the whole thing.

It's in pieces on my driveway.

Grr :x

Chris, you need to find out why the brakes arent any better, even if you need to test my brakes to see how different the setup really is.
Maybe your biasing valve have been played with.
The only thing i can think of is you have a big problem with air in the system, the brakes should absouletly be Shhitt hot with the Escort Master Cylinder and i mean HOT!
Another tip, check each wheel is coming on with the foot pedal, to make sure all 4 corners are coming on.
