Rear Shock removal

Postby richard_p88 on Fri Oct 13, 2006 4:56 pm

I've got a set of Apex -40mm springs, and even a pair compressors.

Only problem is i just cant budge the bolt holding the strut in place at the bottom. This is on the rear drivers side.

Any tips on making it easier to turn? i've tried LOTS of WD40, but to no avail. Should i be turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

Normal tread so anticlockwise to undo and use a breaker bar (can get the extending wheel nut one from range for £1.99) or put a bit of tube over your ratchet to extend the length making it easier to turn.

i used a breaker bar, scaffold on the end, propped it against the floor then lowered the car off the axle stand using the cars weight to lever it round!! had to do this three times repositioning the breaker bar before i could even move it by hand!! may seem a bit heavy handed but it worked and it wasn't too harsh on the bolt as it was a slow controlled twist altho it did make some nasty creaking as i was doing it!!

u can use somthing called plus gas or if in doubt heat the rear beam up where the bolt is.it will expand and slowly the bolt will release in small turns.when u have it out grease the bolt for future reference

yeah, breaker bar's the best. They're a right Bic™ to get out, I got the rear suspensio to look forward to tomorrow

When I removed them on the old car I was compressing the spring and lifting the car off the stand it was that tight

Suggest you cut the buggers off and replace the bolts, with lots of copperslip.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

Thanks guys, will deffinetly look into the breaker bar approach.

I know what you mean about lifting the car tweek! You'd expect the bolt to move first!!

Tempted to get it done by a garage, but the whole pointing in just buying springs was to sae a bit of money for my next car, next year, and the quote i got was £80-90!!

get a biger ratchet, i assume you are using a 1/4 inch, try and get hold of a 1/2 inch and it may be easier. tap it with a hammer a few times. wire brush it.
