Reliability from flowed heads?

Postby Capri on Sat May 01, 2004 8:06 am

I'm looking at several possibilities for some light engine modding on the Capri, and would like to look more at a pair of Stage 1 flowed heads. Can anyone tell me if this might affect the reliability of the rest of the engine? My only thought is that it's 20-year-old machinery and I don't want to place too much extra strain on it. Can anyone help? Also, does anyone have any other ideas for engine mods on the old Cologne V6?

Cheers

Alex

I wouldnt have thought it would have made any difference at all to reliability on it's own.

Get the head gas flowed and ported mate - deffo. You will get increases in both BHP and torque.

Don't worry about 20 year old machinery. If they can stick nitrous in a H-reg Jag (Top Gear anybody) then a ported head is nothing!!

Capri do not worry. A couple of turbos at the same time, bit of a larger exhaust. Just a few things here and there. No problem :)

Usual Cologne tuning guff.
Replace timing gear with steel one, as you probably know the limitations here are the injection which doesn't like big upgrades and can't cope, and the heads, siamese port design crap for power and torque, 2.9 conversions are the way forward especially the 24v Cosworth route.

So I hear. However, I'm not looking for massive moneyspending or big BHP. I'm definitely not keen on doing major modification away from standard spec. I do know the Cologne is a crap engine for tuning though, as has been proved this morning...

Phoned Specialised Engines this morning and they told me the Stage 1 head on the 2.8 wouldn't actually give me much of an increase in torque, and only about 5-7bhp extra, which doesn't really warrant the money it would cost.

Mark, much though I'd love to, sadly I can't quite manage twin turbo's at the moment - who knows what the dim-and-distant future holds though, eh

Anyone else have any ideas? At the moment I'm considering just spending my money on a better exhaust and possibly a K&N filter or kit. Any thoughts?

Chum, I'd completely forgotten about that madwagon! :D

What sort of BHP/Torque figures were he putting out with that setup?

James, No ta mate, I'll stick with injection in my Injector - after all, it says it down the side in big letters so I'd rather keep it that way

what actually happens when an engine is gas flowed and ported? obviously it increases performance but how? and what are the drawbacks that mean manufacturers?

if you've got a link that explains that would probably be easier :)

Try calling up Burton power. They are ford specialists and are pretty good. I get all my upgraded bits from them.

https://www.burtonpower.com/default.aspx

In their catalogue, they give you rough idea on DIY gas flowing, and other technical details should be on the web site too somewhere.
