Reliable power from a FRST.......
21 posts • Page 1 of 1
I have seen a few RST's blow up due to too much boost etc, so i wondered what is the safe limit for a standard engine to run.. chipped ? with how much boost ?
what is a very reliable limit for a chipped car, and will the chip make the engine blow up quickly ? i don't want any explosions...
Cheers .

a stage1 is a safe limit on a std engine, but even this i would recommend getting an uprated head gasket.
with most FRST's the mileage is over 60k so a new cam would also be recommended.
but with any engine, if you are racing about all the time it will eventually blow up...........no matter what power.

Try to get a decent charge temp, may be worth sticking in a ACT gauge. My T2 lasted a couple on months at 1 bar before dying, i`m now running 1 bar through a stage 3 T3 with 196bhp.. My engine should be safe upto 18 psi.. If the engine is built to a high standard with nothing skimped on it will last quite a while.. Fueling is critical otherwise you`ll blow a piston, which is why I would always recommend getting a chip that can be set up/mapped on rollers(unichip)..

Well, i will have to brag (again) that my turbo is hitting 1.1bar and going well with ACT temp of +/- 57'c at full boost on std intercooler.
I totally agree with snake, that fuelling is so critical, you need plenty go-go juice, so get it set-up properly!

fueling is the most critical part of a well set up mota without it BOOM without a doubt. my 8v blew a piston and this was traced to a dodgy injector although all seemed fine on the rollers this did not show up. this is what proves all the bullsiht bhp figures when you can still see std fueling equipment.

Snake,
temps like that are not for too long and i would only really get worried if it was around 65'c +
I would like to try a Pace alloy i/c to see if it really helps ??????????
what boost are you running at ? on std i/c ???

Don't worry Mark with your spec it should be fine, and I know you'll look after it anyway:wink:
Plus I remember you telling me you never go past 5000 revs, so why worry? If you were doing 100-130mph all the time and driving like a fool then your going to have problems...
I'd still recomend an uprated Intercooler though to keep the ACT down.

+ the intercooler takes the sting out of the temps and I can turn the chargecooler pump off when cruising to save wear and tear.. If you`ve got the money get a chargecooler, the only bad point with running it on its own is that you get heatsink quite rapidly unless you stick a large tank in the boot..

so you have a large water tank in your boot ?? then you run pipes to the pump ?? why dont you just wrap the tank in heat reflective material ??
