The EGR only works for the first few minutes the car is started. It doesn't appear to matter if the engine is hot or cold, just run, or not been started for a week.
On my RS1800 engine it runs for about 2 minutes then shuts off. If you stop the engine then restart it will run again for another 2 minutes or so.
On the MOT, emmissions test are to be done with the engine warm, so in theory it should make no difference as there is no requirement to have any of these systems in place.
I'm disconnecting my system at the vacuum solenoid vavle as it's making a weird chuffing noise and my idle doesn't sound right any more. I'm not sure if it will upset the ECU or not though as it may notice the difference from the lambda sensor, although it's only a tiny chance. I'll run it for a few hundred miles and see if affects anything.. does anyone want a status update in a few days?

All my Zetec’s have passed without it. It’s not EGR, if you took that off chances are you wouldn’t pass. The Fiesta’s use a pulse air system, it’s a very crude choke. Only operates at startup as mjhmjh2 said.

Well, a bit of history, took off the pulse air, egr, whatever it's called. My idle speed had been too fast for a few days before too, couldn't work out why so I swapped over throttle body and potentiometer, idle speed control valve, fuel pressure regulator, even tried a different ecu, none helped. I finally fixed it today, the fuel rail was a little loose at one end, one of the three bolts had started to come undone it was sucking in air at one end, which caused the idle to run at about 1600 rpm eeeek. We found out cus we noticed a weird hissing noise so we poured a bucket of water over the engine, clouds of steam came out of the exhaust - COOL!
Anyway with the emmisions stuff off, it made no difference at all except when I ran up the fault meter on the ECU it knew there was a fault with emmisions system, it also recognised that the charicoal canister wasn't present or needed a clean (I took that off when I changed the engine). So as far as the engine is concerned it doesn't appear to matter.

Try undoing one of the nuts and see what it's like. You can do it in situe, you may need to take the hear shield off which won't take more than a couple of minutes, undo the two nuts which hold down the air intake and the jubilee clip from the air pipe then remove the L shaped air pipe. Think the heat shield is two bolts, you can then access the exhaust manifold.
Everyone I know of so far that has been removed has need Oxyacetylene to heat up the exhaust manifold to be able to remove them, but you may be lucky.
Interested to know how you get on.
