RS Turbo Conversion

CVH and Zetec tuning, suspension and braking mods.

Postby mikey79 on Mon Jul 02, 2001 3:48 pm

Hi

Anyone able to tell me what all is needed for a turbo conversion for my 92 XR2i??

I ain't the most technically minded, so basically I am looking for a shopping list of all the parts needed! (and a rough estimate of the cost)

Does an ERST engine fit ok, cos they are cheaper, or is it best to go with a FRST??

What all do I need to complete the swap? eg LSD/fuel tank/gearbox????

Cheers for the advice!

can the power steering be kept or will i need to get a manual rack?

You will need :-

1 x FRST engine  which should have a good history and the gear box.
1 x FRST wiring loom
1 x FRST fuel pump

You will most likely need drive shafts, brakes, engine mounts, suspension etc....

You might be cheaper selling your XR and buying a FRST

tried to sell it... all I got was some posts from 'AndyFranco' but never heard from him again... cheers!

And with the money I have spent on uprating the ICE, suspension and brakes, I ain't looking to accept silly offers. So, looks like I am keeping it!

Turbo here I come. So what are we talking? £500 for the parts (engine/loom & fuel pump) or something?

ive seen an ERST running gear for £800 and that includes everything u could possibly need for the coversion! Not too sure about the FRST running gear though....but this should give u a rough idea

its not gonna be cheap!!! as im in the process and making plans for turbo-ing an Escort....

Let me have a go...

You should use the FRST parts, since the FRST is EFi and therefore more reliable compared to most of the ERST's KE-Jet injection systems.

You will need:-

ECU
Engine, inlet, exhaust manifolds, turbo, downpipe, exhaust
New inlet, exhaust, turbo, and rocker gaskets
Radiator
Coolant hoses

You might need, and you really should have:-

Gearbox and clutch
All new coolant hoses
You could buy a head set and change the thermostat, head gasket, sump gasket, head bolts, valve stem oil seals and while you're at it fit a fast road cam, new lifters and springs
New engine mounts
New shocks and springs if you're running old standard kit
150mph dials

I *think* you can use any EFi fuel tank and pump, but you should p-p-p-pick up a turbo one if possible.

What have I missed? I'm not gonna try and give prices, but I reckon £1,500 ain't unreasonable. I think...

5h1t the bed! :aaah:

Never thought it would be that much! Looks like I need a change of plan...

Might just scan around for a Mondeo 2.0 engine, or is that going to be just as expensive??? :???:

I'm thinking about putting a 2L 16v lump in mine on twin 45s and at a later date going to throttle bodies and a low compression turbo build.

**JUST** thinking....

Alright mikey, just do what i did, bought a complete damaged FRST and swapped all the bits over, i paid a grand for the car, and it was a piece of cake to do, i did it myself in my garage, all i needed was a engine hoist which i borrowed, u must have seen my van going about the town lately, its usually flat out, I would definately recommend doing it!

Or you could go the easy route and trade your 2I in against a frst, theres plenty on the go just now, my mate just paid 800 for a j plate and its not that bad condition!

yeah, I have seen your van on the go - XRV number plate? Looked pretty smart like!

I tried trading the 2i in against a VR6 in Autotechnic and the boy told me he didn't want to waste my time cos it could get £2700 privately, and he could only offer me £1500 max cos Specialist Cars only offer book value - mods don't count there! I could strip it I suppose, and then trade it in standard?? Might keep my eyes open for a nice RST to keep me going for another year or 2...

cheers anyway!
