RS1800 "project trumpets" update with pics 9/4/11

Postby rs1800dom on Tue Aug 31, 2010 7:29 pm

hey peeps, thoght id finally start a thread on here about my rs1800 project.

i got it bout 1year ago, for £700 of ebay with 9 months mot but no tax.

will try and find some pics of her at that point, but for now shall show you the state she is in now.

about 7 months ago i took her along to castle coombe with a couple of guys and girls from here to see what she could do. :D
Image
Image
unfortunatlly, once having my first taste for track, i decided i didnt have enough power and started my search for more  :D

after a while deciding what route to go, i bought this little bunddle from burton power!
Image
Image
Image
Image
id thought about turboing it but decided to try some thing different. and no "lag" :D (depending on final engine spec lol)

anyway, i thought i would wait till winter to fit this down the side of my house, but fate had other ideas!

one night whilei was "testing" it against a mates twin cam sierra, it decided to let go!

while slowing down, i realised it was pluming smoke and fumes out the back and the front of the bonnet.

at this point i thought it had blew a hole in the block!

after further annalisis the following morning, i noticed that actually it was the oil filter had come loose and dumped all my oil onto the bulk head(and exhaust!!!)

although this pi**ed me of, i thought that this was a cloud with a silver linning, as i had the oppertunity to fit the throttle bodies :)

Again fate had its way and i had run out of funds due to needing a day to day car.

aftera few months had passed i decided to get of my arse and get started

with the help of rsonblackwheels we took the head off with both manifolds still on to see the damage.
Image
what we found was not much at all. but to be safe i decided to replace it all.

thanks to rs220bhp on here i had another rs1800 engine to prepare.
Image
today i have decided to crack on with it again and got it jacked up and started to remove the loom ready for the omex system.
Image
Image
here it is in all its glory. but worryingly it connects to the power steering unit. oh well, shall worry bout this later :D
Image
this is how little space i have to work in!
Image
and this is what i had to re home for the shelter. another project to do once this is finished!
Image
have started to prep the engine now as well. got new oil pump new water pump and complete headset and head bolts
Image
ImageImage
Image
will get some more updates as they come. Have had my head skimmed slightly to make sur its flat.
but am now awaiting it back from a friend who is currently fitting new valve stem oil seals and re laping the valves :D
when thats done i should be ready to start with the gearbox and suspension

let us know you opinions and any ideas you have :D :D :D

Looks good mate, You taken your time to get that engine in lol

My mate has the same set up on his fiesta with stage 3 head and cams and it was 175hp, the sound of bodies is amazing.

Your powersteering will still work, i fitted bike carbs to a si and had to remoe the wiring and the power steering still works a treat, think its a pressure switch-maybe ups the revs a little while under load via the ecu or something.

They 45mm bodies?

looks great, love them wheels and the colour, (i like the badge on the front too :) )

the engine looks to be coming on well, will be nice to have them on it

aye your right there about the pas sensor, id say just try not to hold the wheels on full lock to much while on idle, it could stall the engine when the pump demands more power

will be hopefully working on it for a few hours this weekend and while im awaiting my head, i might rip apart the engine bay on a tidy up :D
got some polybushes to fit to the top mounts and might trial fit the strut braces i got from ford fair. depends how much effort i can muster up :D :D

just spoke to my mate who is doing my head.
bad news :x all my valves are severly pitted
he told me since ive already spent a fair bit on the engine that i should splash on new valves.
but am deciding on two options
1: get new valves and have a nice new condition head as ive already spent £50 on a skim
2: get a stage head (save up first) as i wanted to do this in a few years but feel that i might splash out now. and get some cams in a year or two when funds permit!

hmmmm what to do :-?

Bad news about the valves :( If I were you I'd save the pennies and just get the valves done for now - the RS1800 1.8 Zetec is a fantastic engine as standard and the really go well on TB's regardless of headwork (Formula Ford used them a few years back). My previous fez was an RS1800 (now owned by FRSJON - "The Manj") and I had a standard engine in that on TB's followed by a balls-out 2.1 Connaught Competition Engines 220BHP zetec. To be honest with you I found the standard Zetec on TB's and F/Road cams easier to live with than the megabucks engine.

Good luck with it whichever way you decide to go

thanks for the advice jimmyesh.
am now wondering wether your right.
if im not carefull i will always be on the hunt for power and the cost could go spiralling :o
from your advice i might invest in some new valves and stretch for fast road cams :D
do you have any advice on what manufactuer to go with to suit the trumpets?
all ideas welcome as it will give me a broader choice.

Back in 2002 I had a set of Ket FZ1802's on my RS1800 with Jenvey 45's - it made about 180BHP and was still pretty driveable, on the connaught engine I had Piper BP285's which seemed a bit more aggressive but then again these were installed in a £5K Engine with high compression and serious headwork.! :aaah:

A lot has changed since then though, other cams have come on the market etc but I'd still recommend Kent or Piper - if you phone or email them and say what kind of power band/delivery you want then they'll steer you in the right direction :)

either tube torque or tony law. herd they are quite good but am affraid to ask there prices lol
or if money is tight i will go for ashley manifold
any one herd of any other manufatures that are decent?
going to get some new valves from for don monday( or order them at least)
then start on the head once i have them.
going to give kent cams a ring as well to see whats best for my set up :D

well i'd say exhaust manifolds is the biggie where power can be easily lost on a throttle body setup

personally i'd go for a tony law/tube torque/simpson manifold
to get the most out of the 1800 like jimmy mentioned,

if you ever change your mind and look to go for a bigger spec'd 2.0 in the future
at least you know you wont be changing the 4-branch because you went the cheaper option

Hi Mate

Its good to see another green 1800 on bodies. Mine went well in almost the same spec that you are building, i went for piper fast road cam, but then i got to carried away and lost piston 3 and 4 :D

Keep up the good work and hope to see some more pics

Why not get piper to regrind your original cams?
You wouldnt even need vernier pulleys to set the timeing if the person knows what they are doing :)

hello again, finally back on here and slowly progressing with fezza

has been real tight at work as i expect most of you are dealing with to, but had to stop with buying things as scare of job loss

things are slowly picking up now, so decided to spend as much as i can afford to get this done now as really miss driving it

have had a change of plans with the brakes, was going to run ST150 fiesta set up. Have now got ST170 discs (300mm) and mk3 mondeo calipers.

as you can imagine this is going to be tight, but i have "adjusted" the calipers to fit behind my rs2000 wheels (15")

will post up pics tomorrow when i mock fit them on the car

hope to be getting a move on with this now as would like to have it ready for the show season, or at least the last one before winter kicks in again.
