RS1800 || Tidy up | Fix it like you broke it!
So the start of a new thread.
Basically, following a local lad insisting on buying my blue Orion for a concours/RS engined resto I decided I need to find a new daily.
My parents had pestered me about getting something newer and safer, something with airbags and impact protection. I figured the way forward would be either to go for something like a mondeo mk3 2.5v6 or maybe a Focus. But then I realised I wanted something a bit fun. A couple of things crossed my mind. Puma, Zetec S and then I thought about a car I'd fancied for a while. A Fiesta RS1800. Reliable enough Zetec lump, about 130bhp, fun handling comfy seats and, if i'm lucky, a bit of an investment.
There was one thing I was certain on and that was that I wanted a Tourmaline or Tourmallard one.
After some searching about and seeing the usual tat, I found one up in Scotland, but according to the paperwork, I can see it has been in Wales and Kent also.
I had spoken to the owner at length, who seemed pretty genuine and after about thirty pics inside and out we did a deal.
Some pics of the car when polished and shiny....
Comfy Ass wingbacks
On sunday at Classic Ford rather than fly to Scotland, he drove it down to Pod. He also fitted new discs and pads as they were low....
After 500 miles, and a month sitting it needs a good old polish to start.
So When I picked her up, I was pretty happy really, straight for an N plate, bits and pieces like all older motors. I'm intending on getting the kit, bumpers and bonnet repainted. Also, wheel refurb and a little lowering... Not to mention a decent polish
So, a couple of dirty pics caught at the show
Then on the way home I had a bit of a scare. I'd been told to go careful and let the brakes bed in. I was folloing Daz a good distance behind. He had come to a stop, I touched the brakes and had nothing, a little firmer and the rear locked, front left brake applied and I was thrown off onto the grass verge.
After changing my pants, I limped to Toddington services and called for recovery. Only way really, hadn't managed to gt above fifty and no doubt would have had a massive crash.
To his credit, the previous owner has been very apologetic and is offering to sort out the cost of repair.
Waiting to be loaded (front numberplate hanging off)
Onboard the 'Puddle Jumper' Most depressing. Still a cheap way to get the 110 miles home
Next Day
Decided to cheer myself up by fitting up a ford 'Starlight' system. Which, lets be honest is just a capacitor with a Ford badge. At least I can see what is happening briefly...
Monat stripped the brakes off
Blury pic, before it got dark....
The brake seems to be working pass side, but the piston barely moves on the drivers. So, lets wait and see what happens when I get a calliper tomorrow.
So that's it for now. Can't wait to clean it.
But for now.... Welcome to RS ownership.
--
Tuesday
Switched the calliper out and bled the system....t now doen't pull anymore. BUT the pedal nearly travels to the floor before you get anything other than ABS vibration and not much else. Long storyshort, it's booked into Ford tuesday for a brak fault diagnosis, system bleed and service

I decided that I had to clean the old girl to try to feel better about her.
A quick wash and she looked much better.
Random 'bay shot
Then a quick coat of Meguiars deep crystal polish
And a quick vac.
It'll do until I clean it properly. Looks better though....
Thursday
Picked up a new bonnet stay clip, trim clip and a touchup can. According to Ford, this one is TourMallard Green. Will touch in the chips until the respray work, also need to call out the dent guy, mayb get a new bonnet. Maybe Rs Turbo???? hmmm

Looks a nice one fella,
First thing I'd do is get the interior out lift the carpets and inspect the floor.

Re: RS1800 || Tidy up | Fix it like you broke it!
sounds like you got some air in the system, best bleeding it out with a pressure bleeder.
oh, you say its goin into fords... i know proper ford dealers that done do these jobs fully, e.g, brake fluid change is ,. suck the old stuff out from res, refill, crack each bleed nipple to let the caliper/drum get the wet patch and then call it "brake fluid change"
i always watch any work thats being done on my car to see if its being done right, then again it only ever goes in for a MOT and tyres/tracking, nothing more as i do it my self.
anyway, the car looks very nice mate, and for the guy to drive it down from up there is a bonus.
it is a shame about the brakes though, but it dont sound anything major

Hows it feel though mate to own a car rarer than rocking horse s**t ? Ive owned my RS now for a month and the looks you get in it are unreal because not many people know what it is, and the ammount of chives that "try" and race you, its quality to see there faces when they get put in there place

Re: RS1800 || Tidy up | Fix it like you broke it!
Cheers for the comments guys.
Went out for a little blip, have to say i'm very impressed with the way these things go through the twisties as standard, it likes to grip and go. With the brakes feeling a little more positive, i've had a bit more confidence in the car.
I've had a trip to my local scrappy (bridges) and picked up some goodies for the Fezza, namely a mk4/mk5 smooth rear wiper, a second boot light, some ods and sods and trim... for a fiver, obviously in a good mood.
Wiper fitted, with a new propper blade from Ford. Just fits under the spoiler.
I was lucky enough to find another RS1800 steeringwheel bizzarely, mounted to a 55k Friscati, I'll get some pics when I fit it.
Decided today to swap out the crappy brakes for some groved Red.Dot items that I'd had lying about in the garage, having brought them ages ago, whilst I was at it, I changed the springs for some -newer items, as they were pretty corroded.
The first side went okay, bit of a welt with big hammer and all done...
Whilst I was there, I cleaned out the arch. I'll do this properly when I refurb the wheels. Also fitted a set of mk3 Fez mudflaps to reduce the stone rash on the kit.
Sorry for the blurry pic. Phone has given up the ghost!
Then it went downhill.
On the other side, spring was a pain in the bum, Top mount nut took a blow torch and the calliper bolt... well lets just say it had been rounded off and yes, it's still in there. I've borrowed a snap on buzz gun and some hammer overs as, yes thats right, one of the rear arm bolts are also stuck. I even split a socket. It's been a fight all day, every bolt. When I got to the rear, it became apparent that the rear brake line also had a crack in it and needs replacement. So at the end of the day, I have a dragstrm up at the back down at the front 90's style..... tomorrow's another day.
Some pics of how the front sits before it settles down properly. Much more how it should look on an RS IMO.
I got so fed up I made a start on the corroded exhaust, to cheer me up!

More tomorrow... with any luck

Re: RS1800 || Tidy up | Fix it like you broke it!
Forgot to mention, in addition ot the above! ^
The car spent the last week off the road as the brakes weren't working. Tuesday/Weds it sat at Ford and had a full service, inspect and pressure bleed... well that was the plan. The OS ABS modulator bleed valve had corroded badly and as a result was unbleedable. Ford advised that IF a new part was available, it would be £609+vat, but was NLA. Pretty much all the local breakers laughed, or simply said they hadn't seen one in years and even Foray didn't have one.
After several hours at Ford, it left, gingerly and having spoke to several people who ran ABS, I was told that it was both useless and more trubble than its worth. So, I gingerly left Ford and took it home where it was collected by Ed, off the RSOC who sorted me out with fresh brake pipes and now I have brakes! Top guy.
I even managed to make it to the Grasshopper Inn meet Saturday, where I was snapped behind the FRS....

I've also begun a mini project and am building a scalextric RS for a laugh.
Box fresh fezza xr2
Begun by stripping it down and finding some similar alloys, which I put a first coat of filler on and offered up to the shell
After a quick once over with wet and dry, a couple of coats of tourmallard...

Re: RS1800 || Tidy up | Fix it like you broke it!
Today I had a good day ith the car. I popped down to the local tyre place to get the brakes bled again. A cup of tea later and I now have much more feel in the pedal. I'm sure this will improve as the discs bed in.
Oh, a picture of the broken rear line...
When I got back home I decided to pop a coat of satin black on the spoiler and splitter from a rattle can on the mini me...
then decided to break out the trusty wet vac. There were some random dots on the headlining. I don't know or want to know... now gone though.
And started on the seats,
this is what came out...
And finally much cleaner... and free from second hand dirt You can see the new wheel also...
And then my mate Kenny came over and kindly gave the car a good mop, cherry glaze and some toffee wax. Below are some pics and the results!
Working on a previous key scratch
GONE like Cillit Bang.... or 3rd gear in your Quaiffe!
YUM
Parked up safe
BIG BIG thanks to Kenny, who did a fantastic job it looks so fresh now, i'm amazed the difference that can be made with the right gear and skills
