RS1800 track car, stripped for welding

Postby Turboboy67 on Mon Dec 01, 2014 9:24 pm

Picked this up from Ash yesterday, I knew it needed plenty of work, and I wasn't disappointed

Image

Plans are;

Do all welding needed, I always sort this out first, you don't build a house by putting the roof on first do you ?

Weld in cage, inc. onto front suspension struts, weld in rear arb,

Totally strip it out, inc. heater matrix, dash, etc. etc

ST170 engine on Jenveys,

Big brakes,

OMP WRC seats, 2" harnesses,

Coilovers, polybushes, adjustable lower arms, rear camber.

Carbon panels,

Respray !!!

Plus lots of other plans :aviator:

Wish me luck, I will update here regularly even though there only seems around 6 people that use the site now

Yes Bud, but it will be for sale in the New Year, I want to fund this build with it.

Did a little bit more today, I started removing the sound proofing, not a nice job, pictures tomorrow.

Yes mate, they are really nice, I love the seats I had in UFO but they are awful to try and see out the sides and behind you,
these I feel are ideal.

Image

I've also got hold of some rear quarters this week, I couldn't find any NOS or even pattern ones for sale, so the next best thing is good 2nd hand ones and luckily Ed. Knew of an ideal donor car, he kindly went to his local scrap yard where they had a 27k mile car come in last week, this is how Ed. left it :o

Image

He got me both sides and they are very very clean.

Many thanks to Ed for getting these for me and the non PAS set up off of it as well.

Wow, could have done with those for my Popular Plus!

Now I just need a wing and a door for the red one!

Watching this with keen interest, Shaun :)

I've no idea why the car was scrapped, it certainly wasn't for corrosion problems

I've booked the car in with my mate for mid-late Feb for the welding to be done, there's quite a list,

I've also got to buy the ST170 engine and box and get the mounts from Mr. Crazycage so they can be welded in all at the same time,

The car will be up on a spit for a total underside resto and to also make the welding a lot easier.

Yes, that's the plan, 6 gears will be nice, I'll need custom driveshafts, Gary needs the car for these,
so when it's ready I will trailer the car up to him, there's a fair bit to do before that happens though.

Having been there, done it, and got the t-shirt, i wouldnt bother with an ST170 engine mate!

Bottom end is good but head and cam setup etc aint worth the hassle when decent cams are available off the shelf.

Re: RS1800 track car, supercharger !

Postby Turboboy67 on Sun Feb 15, 2015 5:07 pm

Time for an update, I've been busy collecting parts which include ;

Crazycage modified driveshafts for the Focus RS gearbox (which I haven't got yet)

Stainless manifold,

Heated front screen and wiring, I'll be running no heater so this is essential to keep the windscreen clear

I'm still in the process of stripping the car down, this is how it stands atm

Image

The engine will be out by next weekend,
The best bit and thanks to Jon for putting me on to it, is a Powerworks supercharger, :aviator:

This will be coupled to a black top 2.0 giving me an estimated 230bhp with no other mods

Image

The car will be off for welding within two weeks

Are you gonna put arp bolts in engine? Also decomp plate. Don't forget supercharger is same as turbo as it's forced induction. Will create power but at a risk to engine.

Take a look at my build. Sounds tho you have simmilar plans to me. :)

Look forward to seeing this progress.

the good bit about the supercharger is you can bolt it to a standard £100 blacktop and give it death..when it starts breathing heavy you though another engine.. cheap as chips

Progress has been steady, the car is now virtually stripped and ready to be taken off for the welding,

I'll post pictures later but as it stands atm, engine bay is totally stripped, wings and front panel off,
Interior gone and most of the sound proofing removed, I just need to remove the rest in the week,

Now, the welding will consist of;

Rear quarters inner and outer, rear drivers turret replaced !!

Cage will be welded in with extra parts added, seam welded,

Various rust holes that I've found will be cut out and replaced with new metal

The sills on initial inspection look ok, but when the car is up on its spit we can then decide if it's worth replacing them

I think the front panel possibly needs replacing, rear panel has been replaced but I feel it needs removing and replacing again

New drivers door which I have as the current one has, you guessed it, rusted :bonkers:

I estimate the car will be away for around 2 months, on its return it will be booked straight in for painting.

The Supercharger has been paid for and is currently at my mates house in Wakefield awaiting another mate of mine collecting it and bringing it home, pictures of that when I have it here.

The car will have a carbon roof and bonnet, they will be ordered within the next month.
