RS1800 Zetec

Postby dangermouse on Tue Mar 25, 2008 3:13 pm

Hi there, I'm new to this sorta thing on the old forums.

after reading some posts you all seem to be very knowledgeable about the lovely ford.

I have an RS1800 fiesta (put pics up soon) I'm just wondering what would be the best way to get more power out of it?
I have magnex cat back system and air filter but dnt know what to do next.

Any help?

Greetings. Is your RS on the database?

If you want to keep it fairly standard and not go too crazy a Superchip it would be a nice addition!

well my mate has also got a RS1800 and it wernt running wen he brought it, but it came with a superchip. i tried it and it made my car slower, it bounced of the limiter at like 4500 revs and i smelt burning so i been against superchips ever since. but i reakon it was for the 105bhp xr2i zetec.
ive considered throttle bodies but they are well expensive and my insurance company wnt touch me or with a turbo conversion

I'd say it was the wrong chip for the car or there was something wrong somewhere!! I have a superchip in mine and it runs sweet. Standard chip the car is very slow to get past 3500rpm!

tell me about it, i get smoked off the lights by little 106s and cars like that, soon as it hits 4500revs it comes alive and by that time ive had to stop for the next set of lights.
what do you think about live mapping? like after ive fitted a set of cams and pulleys?

Hello matey - I have a mk3.5 rs1800 and thought I'd write up a few words of novice wisdom.

I started with the light mods such as the usual filter and superchip - my car already came with a magnex exhaust. It did make the car a little more responsive and probably nearer it's 130bhp claimed output.

Next on my quest of power I managed to get hold of a gasflowed head and some kent fast road cams. This made a noticeable improvement in the way the car accelerated - I suppose not only are you putting in performance parts, you are also replacing old for new.

Then after some fettling a 4-2-1 stainless manifold was fitted (Decat as well) and a somewhat tailored powerchip.

I'm experiencing some running issues but the overall the car is noticeably faster than a standard rs1800 - there is no small print for that comment - be it off the line (biggest improvement I would say) or rolling so I would be comfortable in saying more bhp accross the rev range - and torque to (surprisingly given the decat and higher lift cams) - actualy output figures I cannot say as I have yet to RR it.

HOWEVER - I am not an experienced mechanic and have been bent over by so called reputable tuning houses in getting these bits fitted. Adding up all the receipts I can probably say that add a few hundred, say 500-600 to all my costs in these mods and I could have had a budget (comp. plate) zetec turbo conversion kicking out around 180bhp. These mods have giving me a MAX of 150bhp I would say.

So if you want some quick mods just make it a little more driveable then n/a tuning can get you results. However, if you really want a fast car (and TBH, while fun, my car is not what I would say is fast) - then perhaps just save up for a budget ZT conversion.

Hope the more experienced guys on this site can shoot some extra pointers in :)

cheers for that man, i really appreciate ur advice and wot u hav experienced with ur RS, as i know owning one is an experience in itself lol.
that manifold, did u have it specially made or did u make it yourself?
i take it ebay helped u out a little?
oh yes im definately going to have to replace some old bits for new, luckily where i work i can hav some stainless manufactured for me, its just deciding what to have made, im at a loss really.
i take it you have to fit the cat for mot purposes?
how come you have running issues?

np matey :)

Manifold was from ebay - (for an escort zetec). Yeah ebay is your friend :) - TBH it was because of my car I used ebay so much - from RCA cables to the ported head.

Manifold Required some modding to clear the starter and I also had to fit a slimline radiator fan.

MOT time is soon so will probably need to refit the cat - however, I recently had an emissions check and once warm - it passed << very strange. But almost certainly, most cars in similar tune and without a cat will need a cat for the MOT.

My running issues are very unusual - I have a missfire high up the rev range. Although I am quite sure it is not to do with my mods and jsut normal wear and tear items - maybe the coil pack etc.

Just as a closing note. Part of the earlier message was an opinion upon modding. If you want a fast car then maybe at the very least - talk to some of the guys on here about a zetec turbo conversion - bhp per pound it works out cheaper at around 150bhp +. Something to think about :)

cheers man, yea ebay will be my very good friend when i get paid.
i like the idea of having a ported and polished head and inlet manifold, should see some nice gains.
im after a decent manifold, but the only one who seems to make one is ashley, and thats mild steel, would it be worth me purchasing it?
turbo conversion would be fun, but insurance companies dont like it when i tick the turbo box lol.
pumabuild/speed not sure which one, make an upgraded coil pack, i saw it in perf ford mag a few months back, 60odd quid i [ERRR], that may help
