I am having a nightmare!.

Here's a list of problems perhaps some one could assist me , as I've been on at a specific member and he needs a break ! Lol!.

*the car struggles to start; it's always like its got a flat battery, but it's been changed recently, if your persistent and hold down the key she will fire up 'eventually' thing is its had a tried and tested alternator fitted on, recent bat , I just can't understand ??

* some majour boost issues , it all started last week , a 4 hour round trip. since then ,one minute the cars awesome the next it's hitting boost and spluttering, running awfull it's running OFAB , 195 chip , beiges , grs , cone filter ,

I took the ECU out yesterday and gave it a clean and re fitted the chip, and she was fine , then I tried her this evening and its gone back to holding back / spluttering on boost, with out even being moved , ?????

Could the ECU be shot? Or the chip, a wire arking out ?

at what boost pressure does the 'spluttering' occur? standard boost limit? (10 psi) ...any black smoke when it does start?

No smoke , it starts at about 0.6 bar , which is about 8/9 psi!. Yesterday it flew around to 1bar, with no hesitation !. But today it couldn't even make 0.6 with out it having issues !

do you mean cliff's car? it sounds chip related if the a boost limit is kicking in.

if its the boost limit causing the trouble when it hits the limit it doesnt like boost at all after that until the engines switched off and re started.sound familiar?

Yeah cliffs ... Why the hell I typed kieth I don't know haha!

Yeah if I take the chip out it'll run fine just as you would expect the safety limit kicks in! Other than that its fine ; plug chip in it'll work once then that's it

chip change sounds the best idea. know anyone with one fitted that you could try?

:lol: your alright mate I don't mind the pm's

Knowing what we have gone through via pm, are you sure it couldn't be the fuel pump,
Maybe the fuel pump plug needs looking at check for signs of it over heating, blacking or melting, and see if the connections have opened up in the plug if they have close them a bit.
Not saying this is likely cause but something else to rule out

Also, prob not related at all, but pop the green relay out and give the pins a clean up

Is gone car still playing up with the chip out or you refitted it?

Struggling to turn over & start suggests timing is out imo.

Iv checked starters out of the car and theyv been fine and struggled to start the car but the one starter iv got thats been on and off the car for about 4 years always turns that bit faster starts the car no problem
Youd know if it sounded like the starter that was struggling by the sound of it
Take it out and gie it a spray inside with wd40 stick the jump leads on it and run it a bit then let the excess wd drip out and see if its any better

If its fine starting from cold, the starters on these suffer from heatsoak esp with a T3, ford used to do a shield for them or just wrap them, once they have suffered from this the starter is never the same again.

Today's episode,

I decided to have a clean on the ECU and chip , fitted it securely and it was not successful,
Boost was horrible.

Soooo..

I took it out.. And on boost she was really fun to drive, but on idol she ran very high on the revs, and often jolted forward when pulling away, would I be correct in thinking that's just due to the car being set up for the 195 chip, and with out it fitted it will run rough due to the 'air/fuel' mixture ?.

I'm highly convinced that the 195 is faulty / shot

Just to add, I've also cleaned the fuel pump plugs terminals but this made no difference !.

yes i think you need to change/borrow a chip so you can see if its the problem. and dont keep running the car without the chip and the beige injectors still fitted. it will over fuel massively..

So parked up at the chippy , got my stuff jumped in the car and flat battery , I kept on trying still flat, tapped the starter motor , wiggled a few wires , and jumped back in still dead, kept on turning the key, and then she fired up?? I can't understand :-( !.

Any one think of anything?.. Other wise I'm going to have find an auto electrition to have a look!.

Did you get dash lights when trying to start?

Was fuel pump priming ok as in prime then stop or keep running?

Shen trying to start was there starter movement or just a click or nothing?

Have you checked te wiring between alternator-starter motor and battery? Mine had exactly the same starting symptoms turned out to be te cable corroded inside. Get a multi meter out and check in as many places as u can to see what the cable is like. Also the running problem very much sounds like a dodgy chip. I would change this and avoid driving on your current one if possible as who knows what it's doing :P

got a new chip coning, slowly but surely, the charging issue is going! Spent the day removing some awfull wiring inside the car , tomorrow I'm replacing / removing any un needed or broken cables !.

A good productive day.... Until the passenger window decided to no longer go up ... Another day haha!

Have a good look at the thick wire from the alt to starter //starter to battery ,bend them and if they are britle they will break

change them ,,,for all it is 4 mayb 5 foot of cable a tenner and thats all good also starting probs are mostly an earth problem ,,stick a jump lead to the earth on the battery and a nice lifting eye on the engine give it a good rub to get a good contact

Turn the key im sure it will start if it does put a heaveyish cable from the earth on the bat to any close good clean bit of metal DO NOT use an existing earth make anice new one

and im hopefull that the alternator will put out the reguired 14 odd volts because the cable can carry it to the fuel pump and put out the fuel with the pressure it needs as the man j knows


but try the jump lead from the earth on the bat to a good clean bit of metal on the engine ,,then check the barrel

But please remember a ford starter moter gets hot and a turbo even hotter ,,no startey
Its a T3 your running cos it might be feckin heat soak from the many going to the starter



just a get a bit more lenght from alt ,too the CROSSMEMBER PAST THE T3 and in to the starter



Burnt and broken wires wont cary anything never mind WTF you cant see

It's a t2 mate, thanks for all your help and advice!.

What ever I've touched or moved its worked at the moment, it's started first time every time, 'touch wood' hope it continues, :lol:

I've looked at the wire running from the bat to the starter, and it looks like its over due renewal, I've searched high and low today for some similar grade cable but can not find any, and the breakers hasn't got any mk3s laying around, I'm currently in the process of cleaning any earths up. Excessive wires , the usual with a 20+ year motor! ... :rolleyes:

Hopefully by the end of the week ill have the new chip fitted and that will be the end of that one , and be able to enjoy the car finally.


Other than the passenger window that doesn't stay up !..

try maplin for cable
mind get some good big earths or if you have somewhere close that does starters and alternaters maybe they will make one up for you

Falls down like its shot mate , I pulled the motor out and the part (a small black plastic block) that latches on to the part that pulls the window up has snapped off. So it's a gonner I think!.

I've managed to jam the window up jay, that will get me by temporally, off to maplins tomorrow , soldering iron, and live cable on the list !.

Going to be looking at fuel filter /plugs/ and oil change , at the weekend.

What plugs and oil should I be purchasing guys?.

As above, a juicy sized cable will suck the heat quick, so your need one that gets hot quick, I like the gun shaped ones where you got to pull the trigger to get heat.

I've also used a wind proof lighter in the past as they burn hot and fast lol

Plugs, down to you, I us NGK with no problem think there NGK platinum or something its been so long I forget what they are :lol: but to add, I do like 400 miles a year at best so haven't changed them in Dom time as don't need to.

Oil wise I use semi synthetic 10w40, its motorcraft as it comes from ford although its made by mobile so Clark tells me

That oil is a good price jay, think ill get me some of that , I went into maplins for a soldering iron and cable, walked out with a dremel set in staid ????, the only cable they had looked like live cable you find in a amp wiring kit, so I chinned that of!. Really struggling to hunt down some cable, may have to go to Ford and see if they still stock that item.

You can never walk out empty handed can ya lol

Try a electrical supplier, get some high amp stuff or go to a auto electrican and get them to make a cable up for ya will be cheaper than fords, that what I done when I needed to replace mine

Lol, It was reduced by £25 bargain , only drama is I haven't a clue what part is for what , got no descriptive instructions !.

Good shout on the auto electrican, I've got one local so I'll pay them a visit, see what they can provide.

Sooo with the car starting up every time when it's asked to its happy days on that one ;

Been avoiding driving the car until this ahmed bajoo chip comes , hoping that sorts the boosting issue , if not its going to be sent to jano see what's going on, going to look at maybe replacing the fuel pump , think stevo has an up rated one see if its still around end of the month, ( think the wife should never know any of This)
