Sheriff Burman :jonyb4 :if i were walking down that street and seen this going on, id be in heavan and without due thought start talking and watching.. the only problem with a garage is no one knows what your potching with
I literally have no idea what any of that means.
Seriously jony did you type that using a potato to smash keys with??
Anyways, that intercooler looks good, i love how close it is to the bonnet!! I also think the grey vents could be good!!

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , Intercooler fitted :)
Thanks for all the comments people car is getting there slowly lol
As for the engine progress , forged pistons are at home, forged steel conrods and arp bolts are in the post to me , and my new turbo is on route aswell so its getting there, still lots more money to spend but some of the main parts are there , its not really a top secret engine more of I'm fed up of people telling me what I should and shouldn't do with it , and I'm doing it "the wrong way" . Il do it my way as I know what I want from it and see no reason why I won't achieve it, Atleast this way my internals are strong for 400bhp not that il want that many.. 300 should be plenty with some extremely healthy torque to rip me face off with
Sorry for no pictures haven't done much lately been working 7 days a week to save up for parts

jonyb4 :oof most the expense already done then!
I wish it was seriously tho I was originally going to build it on a budget of 1k and ~250bhp which is fairly easy to do . But now iv started to build it I've decided against building the engine on a budget hence the forged rods and would rather build it a better spec than needed as I want this to be reliable and able to be thrashed around on track without worries . New realistic build price will probably be 1400-2k now as I'd rather buy better parts than "that'l do the job" parts
Progress would be alot quicker but being hindered ATM by having to replace, all my suspension, all 4 tyres, rear beam and all my bushes . But after this a set of new TRE and 4 wheel laser alignment should have it back to driving sweet and handling how it used to standard shocks with 60mm springs are horrid after coilies
Still lots of parts to collect before the build will even start but starting to feel like Im actually getting somewhere now

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , Intercooler fitted :)
Only a small update. Got laid off just before Xmas so that has slowed the ZT build down.. I'm back into work now , not much to report on the engine front just been buying bits n bobs for it
Although I did but myself something for Xmas
Most people seem to like them, I like them they're an improvement on the vts wheels anyways.. I'm not sure whether I like the back centres or not tho, think i would go with a grey/silver centre if not although they are growing on me
Anyway's rate them or slate them.. I won't loose any sleep

I think as it's a non standard colour it works, however one thing does bug me, and that's the placement of the rs turbo sticker on the back!! Lol

It is a standard colour just not for a turbo what's up with the sticker? Because its lower than standard?
If so that happened because I was concentrating so much on making sure it was straight and level I forgot about the height

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , Intercooler fitted :) small update
Well haven't updated this in a few months, unfortunately I don't have hoards of pictures or updates for you at he moment as I'm still just working and collecting parts for the new engine.. Altho I do have a couple of pictures I'd like to share with you so you can keep an idea of what's going on
Couple of quick mock up pictures to get an idea in what itl look like
Excuse the cheesy picture but you can't be sad when an ice cream truck pulls in your road after youv dropped an engine
So just a couple of pictures to keep you in the loop, I'm really trying to get cracking with the new engine now as much as my income will let me anyhow. Also I will be painting the engine bay the same colour as the body before the engine goes in because it looks silly blue and it's probably the best/easiest time to do so
I will try to update this more frequently with pictures and info on what's going on

What's your plan for the inlet, Russ? Are you chopping the end off and modifying it to clear the servo or are you changing the servo?

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , UPDATE
Done a couple of little bits to the engine whilst waiting for the money to get machining done, also struggling to find a local machinist that'l bore n deck my block
Rocker cover painted graphite grey , got a nice shiny smooth finish
Engine mount bracket painted satin black (not a great picture)
Alternator bracket satin black
Coil pack bracket satin black
Will try to keep this thread updated more often now

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , UPDATE
Well still plodding along with the engine build at the moment buying parts and paying for servicing but definately getting there now. Just valve springs left to order next week and then I have all the parts to assemble the engine then just gearbox and ecu to sort afterwards, oh and respray the engine bay lol
Thought I'd throw a few pics up for anyone that's interested
Block back from the machinist. Had a rebore and home and deck, also the crank had a polish as there was some minor marks in but they've come out with te polishing. Please excuse the mess!
Chopping the flange off of my exhaust manifould, once the engine is assembled this will be mocked up and welded to the new flange so I can get a better route for the down pipe
Block drilled and tapped for the oil return fitting, plus the breather blank fitted and another breather port fitted to the other side of the block
Block given the first lick of paint
Waiting on my piston ring tools to build the bottom end up.
Need to find out my piston ring gaps aswell if anybody would have any help to finding this out?
More to come soon
Russ

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , more pics of the engine build 1/6/14
Wow I haven't updated this in a while again, il try and pick up from where I left off, this update will probably be mostly pictures
Well last time I was here was before the bottom end build, so here's the crank in the block
One of the pistons and con rods attached and fitted with rings installed
3 out of 4 in there were starting to make an engine
A view from the under belly showing all four connected and arps torqued up
1 bottom end 90% complete
Baffle plate and oil pick up fitted ( old oil pump left on for mocking up and sealing use only whilst waiting for delivery of new one
Lick of paint given to the sump
And this completes the bottom end assembly (until pumps etc were changed at a later date
Then I got busy rebuilding the head, well when I say rebuild I mean , valve train was cleaned and inspected , all gaskets n stem seals replaced, DD valve springs fitted for boost and 1 of the cams was swapped over for the 2ltr item (inlet cam from memory)
Here's what I started with (head has been decked already here)
All valve train removed ready for cleaning, lapping back in , and replaced stem seals n springs
Lots of cups!! I tell you now it makes a change going from an 8v head to 16v lol
I'm missing a few picture between but here's the outcome after it was refitted
Then of course once the camshafts went back in the head was ready for fitting, but not before a quick lick of paint to tie in with the rest, focus MLS head gasket fitted between the two and I have something similar to an engine
Oil and water pump replaced
I then started to bolt other parts on and things are taking shape quickly
So that's basically the engine built, I need to get my flywheel skimmed then that and the clutch assembly can be fitted ,I want to get a set of kv85 HT leads, inlet manifould needs welding and vxr injectors fitting and she's pretty much ready for fitting to the car
So that brings me on to getting the car up to par, now I'm not sure if this is a frascatti thing or mk3.5 or whatever but my engine bay has always been a dark blue colour which is kind of pants next to the bright green , so que a warm sunny weekend a fair few spray cans and a bit of prep work and we have more progress
And we have a engine bay in a lovely tone of grey (for those of you with beady eyes , yes there is rust on the front panel and battery tray and yes I have painted straight over them, my reasons are simple 1 the battery tray will be removed and the battery will go in the boot once the engine is up and running, and 2 over the winter once the engine build is done I will be completely de rusting the car meaning a new front and rear panel , 1 arch replacement and il probably change the sills too for peace of mind, then hopefully shel be in for a full respray) but anyway back to the pics!
Obviously I didn't want my engine bay grey either so next came the colour and the laquer
I'm not sure what the pics make it look like but I'm very happy with it for a rattle can job done in the road with not much prep work it's come out great, the colour match is good and consistent, the finish is smooth to touch with a nice wet/shiny look to it . I will be touching up the scuttle panel and giving it all a 2000grit wet sand n polish then it will be finished . Also any parts you can see with over spray on will be removed and cleaned up/painted aswell

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , more pics of the engine build 1/6/14
So with the post more up to date now I suppose I should reveal how things are going
I'm going to be running the engine in on my old bc gearbox 1 to make things easy and 2 as a safety measure for running In if I was to boot it is blow the gearbox up before and damage is done to the engine
I am going to be building up an ib5 gearbox with s2 LSD and May possibly try and get 1st and 2nd gear shot peened to help it cope
So once my flywheel is sorted a gearbox can be fitted and the engine can go in the hole
Then onwards I need :
Inlet manifould welding and painting
Astra vxr injectors
Purchase ofam ecu
Finish modding and welding up my manifould and down pipe
And then a few odds n sods hosing piping mounting things in and getting her going.
I would like to think il have the engine in the bay by very early September and then it's just however long it takes me to get the money together to finish off buying the parts.. Iv been without the fez for far too long now and I'm growing impatient I just wanna drive the damn thing now

Thanks very much I could be tempted by the injectors but I would have thought 660 would be a bit overkill considering vxr are 440, and depends on price aswell as vxr are only 120-140 brand new lol pm me about then if you'd like to talk

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , MAJOR UPDATE 30/8/14
Well another small update to keep this sort of up to date, the engine is fitted to the car now so I can get cracking on with sorting other parts out, you will have to excuse some of the mess but it's starting to look like something now manifould will be getting changed more as it's not really in a ideal place where it is so il be modifying that more but gives you an idea o how things are looking excuse the messy welds aswell please iv had no gas or mask yet so just been racking up blind and without the gas it doesn't take well just creates splatter and mess
It's finally a zetec turbo
So yea there you have it its in the hole, still s**t loads left to do to it including
Finish off modifying exhausts manifould and fabricate downpipe to fit,
Finish getting inlet modified and fit
Sort engine loom and water hosing
Get parts for gearbox to be built, it's only fitted with a spare knackered box at the moment

Thanks very much buddy means a lot yea it has taken me a while, mostly due to money but using it daily and having a lack of direction has held me up a lot aswell. But plans are set now engine and bay is all planned interior changes are on the cards and the exterior will get a freshen up and probably a respray to be honest but that's a while off yet, I still can't decide what wheels tho!
Do it buddy you won't regret it! And before things get expensive and you start filling up the engine bay they're a doddle to work on

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , Engine fitted 13/10/14
Yea i'v wanted a frst for ever been on here almost 10 years but every time it looks like i'll gt one it never happened. I'm now in a situation were I can buy one but through being a bit older and used to driving larger more refined cars i'v been looking at m3's. I'm thinking buy a frst for a year or so to get it out of my system perhaps just have 2 cars lol. Just don't know yet but if i don't get one i'll probably never forgive myself.
Looking forward to seing your progress bud

Re: Russ' mint green FRST , Engine fitted 13/10/14
Just thought I'd throw up a couple of pics to show where I am up to,
So it's pretty close now, main things iv got left to purchase are
Ecu
Injectors
Wideband lambda
Send my gearbox off for rebuild end of January (guy is too busy to do any sooner)
I'm going to be buying another exhaust manifold , altho I like this one I think it mounts the turbo too close to the alternator so the downpipe off the exhaust housing is going to end up with a 130 odd degree bend straight away and I don't want this too cause heat problems or be a restriction . So il be looking at a 200sx s14 manifold next I think
Obviously there are a lot of little bits n bobs that are still needed aswell
iv bought myself a lexus is200sport for a bit of winter fun to keep me driving but once it comes to February time il be selling that to fund any parts I haven't yet bought
