Postby Captain Tightpants on Fri Nov 23, 2007 4:22 pm

Help requried please!

James and myself have been arguing today about how many slices of bread are required to make four sandwiches. Could people please prove the northern git wrong and vote on whichever you think is correct!

Many thanks in advance fellow sandwich lovers!

I would say 8 as i count 1 sandwich as 2 slice of bread together but i can see why people might say 4 if they count half a sandwich as 1 sandwich but they would be WRONG!

No-one sells a single sandwich the size of a whole slice of bread, they're always halved, usually diagonally.

RUBBISH!

It's clearly two sandwiches.

A sandwich is a food item typically made of one or more slices of leavened bread with one or more layers of meat, vegetables, cheese or jam.

So each triangle sandwich can be made with ONE slice of bread meaning that 4 only require 4 slices of bread. :P

It would only be considered a triangular sandwich if constructed originally in a triangle a shape, the slice being cut from a triangular loaf (instead of square), at a 90 degree angle to the longest side of the loaf.

A sandwich cannot be considered 2 sandwiches when cut in half, as it becomes 2 halves of a sandwich.

When you buy a sandwich from a garage its not boxed as 2 sandwiches jsut because its been halved is it?

"So each triangle sandwich can be made with ONE slice of bread meaning that 4 only require 4 slices of bread." Yes 4 triangular halves of a sandwich can be made with 4 slices, but thats not the question :P

To answer the question you really have to define what a 'slice' is. A slice of bread would usually equate to a peice of bread you remove from a bag of bread thats been pre cut. Obvioulsy im ingoring the fact that one could cut their own loaf, however ive never managed to cut a triangular peice from a square loaf, and neither a round one.

4 sandwiches 8 slices. The way you divide your one sandwich into halves/triangles/star shapes is your own sick perversion :P Real men dont cut their hand made sarnies at all. :d

Yes im bored.

when you open a loaf of bread it is in slices

2 pieces make 1 sandwich. You cant count pieces after its cut.

If you wanted to get 4 sandwiches out of 2 slices of bread then that's your decision to make kiddy sandwiches for your lunchbox

So say I cut one slice of bread into half and made a sandwich with it, whats that? It can't be half a sandwich as its not half of anything, its a whole, therefore one sandwich.

You lot are taking two pieces of bread, and making a sandwich, then cutting it into two. Therefore making two whole sandwiches. If for instance you don't cut it in half, you then just have a double sized sandwich.

I am correct!

Right so If that is right, I am going to up the ante!

I am going to cut your slice of bread into quaters....and make a sandwich from two of each piece!

Therefore 4 sandwiches with one slice of bread!

yes.and no.

the word sandwich has come to be used in the english language to describe something that is stuck between two other things. so technically you could make 16 sandwiches with one slice of bread you just have to cut it up very small. but for the sake of argument (and what i know a proper sandwich, not naff ones from garages to be) im gonna say eight slices four sarnies.

now, consider that a sandwich requires 2 pieces of bread to be called a sandwich (read definition above) therefore EIGHT slices of bread are needed to make FOUR sandwiches. however big they are, wether they are the same sandwich cut in half (therefore making it 2 halves) or wether they are cut from the same piece is irrelevant. it takes eight pieces to make four sandwiches.

DEBATE

OK, I'll let the pictures to the talking.

To make ONE sandwich, you need TWO slices of bread:
Image

This makes ONE sandwich:

ONE sandwich (albeit cut in half):

Still ONE sandwich! (albeit cut into smaller pieces):

the question was how many bits of bread per sandwhich, i say 2, 1 top 1 bottom, then cut it in half.

if you start saying about getting 1 bit of bread and filling half and folding over or even cutting it, it still makes 1 sandwhich, but half of one as only half the amount of bread and filling has been used to make it, so for 4 sandwhiches, you need 8 bits of bread, 2 for each, nuff said

i hate it when im asked if i want a sandwhich and then there say 1 or 2, i say 1 and i get, 1 bit of bread or 2 :x :x common sense, 1 sandwhcih 2 bits of bread
