Seat Relocation
Hi All,
Not sure if this is really a "Technical" query but seems the best fit...
I have had a floor mounted pedal box fitted but in order to fit it is a little bit closer to the driver than normal. I'd guess at about 4 inches or thereabouts. I normally struggle to fit comfortably with the standard Recaro position anyway, only 6ft 1 so not overly tall.
My question is, can I remount the standard seat to the rear floor pan? either using reinforcing plates or some box section welded in to maintain normal height. I want to maintain the original Recaro seats as it took me a long time to find a decent pair. I appreciate I will lose rear leg room off the drivers side, but tbh I wouldn't realistically be taking passengers in the back anyway, if I wanted to take people anywhere I'd just use the mondeo. I also appreciate the steering wheel will need to be moved back to compensate, but I already have an adapter and wheel which should be suitable. If it needs to be closer still I'll find myself a dished wheel.
I was presented with the suggestion of mounting it to steering column and swapping the pedals about but I don't think I could mount it much further back than it currently is.
What are your opinions on:
1 - Is this a good idea?
2 - Do you think it would be safe?
3 - Would I be better to lower the seat aswell to help with the angle?
4 - Do you have any better suggestions?
I look forward to your responses
Many thanks,
Si

Re: Seat Relocation
Hmmm, just had a thought about seatbelt! If the seat ends up too far behind B-pillar I guess it wouldn't be "safe" so guess I will need to take this into account.
I'll mock it up Saturday to find out, luckily I have deep upper torso so should buy me a few inches!

Re: Seat Relocation
I relocated my seats in K18 UFO (frsJon owns it now) with box sections welded in and used harnesses.

Re: Seat Relocation
Was it for mounting the bucket seats in or for moving standard recaro's? I'm going to try and move the standard seats. But guess it will be similar principal, maybe custom mounts on base and then run the box sections you mention. Food for thought

Si

Re: Seat Relocation
It was for those bucket seats, I would imagine you could use the same method for standard seats though.

Re: Seat Relocation
This has been floating around my head for at least a year now funnily enough.
I've wanted to do this with the standard runners and RST Recaro's, because I find that I always want the seat to go back a little bit further.
I've thought about modding the seat runners somehow to allow the seat to go back slightly, but I've not looked into how they are made and if it's even possible My next option was to drill and tap some extra holes into the runners, but again, need time to look into if this is a viable option.
If you come up with any answers with regards to using OEM parts, it'll be nice to know

Re: Seat Relocation
Sure I'll update this with my progress as it comes along.
I have a measurement request if anyone can help though.. What is the standard distance between throttle pedal and front seat bolt please?
Current thinking is to re-drill the front 2 holes at rear of box section they are on should give me 3-4 inches. Re-drill rear at back of existing reinforced plate which gives maybe 2 inches then cut off and weld the rear subframe bracket the remaining distance.
Hoping 4 inches is enough?

Re: Seat Relocation
I have made some progress with this, have essentially drilled it behind the cross beam into the floorpans with some spreader plates behind the mounting points. I have seen seats bolted to TVR's with penny washers through fibreglass so this should be plenty strong enough!
Only thing I haven't done is fit the 20mm spacer shown in my diagram below.
Cheers,
Si
