Si air filter

CVH and Zetec tuning, suspension and braking mods.

OK I'm probably going to get laughed at for this, but...

A K&N induction kit works by allowing more air into the engine, right?

So, for a cheap alternative, if I was set loose on my standard Ford air filter with, say a drill, and I made lots of holes; would it let more air into the engine and make it a little more responsive, just like K&N?

yes that would work, IMO no point getting the K&N, just drill lots of holes around the filter

Drill the airbox not the filter, and make sure the holes are only on the unfiltered side - you must have properly filtered air going into the engine esp with the 16v engines cos they don't like crap being bounced around inside them one little bit.

K&N might do a replacement element for the Si which will be less restrictive than the standard kit. Btw, most people report the Si sounds a helluva lot better with an induction kit, although it may run a little less well.
