Use fibreglass to fill most of the hole then use a thin skim of filler on top and smooth down. I use ISOPON P40 fibreglass & P38? filler. Personally I'd cut the light recess off and then fibreglass/fill the hole up instead of just filling the recess with loadsa fibreglass.
