Spax VSX Kits, Opinions please

Postby JayC on Mon May 14, 2007 12:28 am

Compared to the likes standard spax, gmax etc, i would like ride adjustablity but these ones dont have damp adjust..

All part of my handling mission, but i thought ide get opinions here.

Thanks

Jay

If your on a handling mission i have heard that people normaly just use suspension kits rather than coilovers, cant remember the reason though, something to do with they already at the perfect settings ect so no need to mess about with them and it can be a pain getting everything right.

Just because I keep talking about definetly doing it doesn't mean I'm actualy going to do it.

one problem with any adjustable suspension is there is two ways people set them up:

1) you tweak with them for weeks getting them just right (about the same setting that a standard, none adjustable set come as) and then dont touch them again for years. by the time they are starting to wear out and get a bit softer the adjustments are ceased up.

2) some people think its best to just wind them up to full hardest setting because "that must give the best handleing because its harder" - this is not true. the optimum setting will be backed off from this a bit, the hardest setting is only there so you can stiffen them up a bit more when they start to wear out.

The big advantage of coilovers is that they dont take up much room in your arches, therfore they are good for putting wider wheels on.

Personally I have a non adjustable Spax kit, front and rear strut braces, polyeurathane bushes all round and uprated roll bars and I have never been shown up handling wise.

but ive heard that the gmax and spax etc are pretty bad build quality..

i want something pretty rugged, seems like the weitec coilovers arnt for sale for the mk3 anyway.

maybe i should just go for something simple

yes give me a tinkle mate ide be very intrested.. are you on about the coilovers yes? there quite expensive but since posting the thread i have thought more about them.

i see myself getting enough money to get something cheap.. then thinking.. hmm, i can go on longer.

I want to fit 17inch alloys, hence why i want to have adjustable camber, i would go for eccentric top mounts as there cheap but i think the areasix arms are more reasonable.

I know the good and bads about 17's, I dont want to hear them again, I know i may be contradicting myself when I say I want them for looks when ive said I want to sort the handling. I think its perfectly achivable with 17s and the right setup and the compremise is right there, style or handling.

This is why I absolutly have to get the best from the rest of the gear.

Unfortunaly, it all costs money, so it takes me time as im not on the best income, its good but I dont do alot of overtime and i get pissed alot of the time

anyways, thanks for everyones help so far, i got my new steering UJ and rollbar bushes today, something to do at the weekend :Q

On the build quality issue - Ive had my spax kit on for 4 years now and its still going strong. 1 rear shock went after about 2 years on the car but the changed it no problem on the 3 year 36k mile warranty they came with. I will certainly go for spax again in the future

maybe i misunderstood then, im sure i heard on our home site Jay that spax were taken over and were crap build quality.

I would like a few more opinions on the spax VSX kit.. but i might run into trouble getting 17x7 wheels over them?

on the rear of the Fez, am i right that the spring is over the strut?

I have found the VSX kit for around £285 posted.. if anyone knows of anyware cheaper please let me know :)

Thanks

Added: Ive found it for £265 posted :)

Pending a few more opinions on the VSX kit, I think it may be the kit.. ive thought about the opinions on coilovers and even although there are not many they are pretty valid, I wouldent be having a hard setting not on our roads, for track it may be ok, but to work and road trips..

I have a PSAX kit on my S2, it's been on the car fo over 5 years and is still nice and tight and takes everything I chuck at it on and off track. For the price they aren't too shabby at all.

In an ideal world I would have fitted Koni's but the budget didn't allow it at the time.

Coilovers are complete overkill and often fitted as they are seen as a buzz modification. The huge majority of people don't have the faintest idea how to set them up or gain anything worthwhile from them. They are used as a way to fudge a car lower or fudge on wheels that just aren't suitable

I had the Spax VSX kit on my 2.0 and it was amazing, really was perfectly setup for what I wanted. The new owner also says the same. :)

To buy them give KEVFRST off here a PM , I actually bought my kit off him (actually his company Powatek) . Also got a kit for the Saxo off him along with many other parts. He will do his best to beat any quote you have had and gives a very quick and friendly service.

Thanks for your additions lads, hb69 ive pm'ed ya.

Thanks for the recomendation ill give him a PM strait away to see if he can help :Q

The VSX kit it is..

The car is totaly standard, all I have fitted is a set of droplinks towards the handling, so to be frank the handling is s**t, especialy with the 2.0, its still on 14inch steels too.. shamer I know but for £62 quid who can complain :P

I also think it will be quicker once I have the adjustable arms and everything else, the traction is pretty poo at the moment.

In time everything will be replaced and then ill move on to the brakes, then start to tune the engine.
