Speakers and stuff

Postby dontpannic on Fri Jul 21, 2006 5:04 pm

Hi all, I've got some queries.

To start, I don't have much money - so I am on a strict budget.

I bought my car in february and immediatly replaced the radio to a cheap Acoustic Solutions jobbie from Argos (4x20W with RCA outputs).

I then went on to purchase two 5inch Riesen speakers (rated at 80W) and two 4inch Riesen speakers (rated at 90W) from Maplins, (£14.99 and £9.99 respectively). They basically now sound extremely crackly on the right hand side - probably because of too much volume.

Basically I want a cheap system (not inc head unit) that will give me as good a bass and volume as I would need.

I've been looking on Car Audio Security, and have seen some Alpine jobbies for £24.99 a pair, would these do? Just being wired directly into the back of the radio?

I also need some advice on subs, etc.

What do I need to do? I understand I need something with RCA inputs, but would I need an amp, if I were to buy an Active Sub? How would you wire the power in to an active sub.

I'm only after cheap solutions as I only intend on keeping the fiesta for another year or so then my sister would probably get it - not into loud music.

Thanks in advance guys.

(Is Car Audio Security in hayes/west wickham??)

I'm running 2 sets of standard front speakers (an extra set mounted in the footwell on passenger side, and below teh steering column on drivers side), and then a set of 6x9's in the shelf with a reasonable sony headunit. The rear 6x9's are old alpine ones rated at 30W's each  and had I not swapped them for some parts, would have cost £15 second hand including a parcel shelf and some covering material (Thanks to ianFRST). Best thing for a cheap setup is probably a good headunit (mine outputs 4x50W's I think) and some reasonable 6x9's.

And my set-up, which cost me abosulutly nothing through lucky blags and trading, is actually pritty good, although it doesn't make your ears explode.

thanks for the reply, i'll take it on board. I just want something that sounds good at low volumes but can go up high without blowing the damn speakers!

Don't faff with naff kit becuase of a low budget. Buy once and buy right as you'll only end up replacing it all anyway. You can get an acceptable known brand deck from about £130 or you may even dig one up cheaper second hand. A nice set of speakers in the front and a set of 6x9's on the back and you'll probably be happy as a pig in poo. You will then be able to expand from there.

Ideally I'd like to see a decent deck running an amped component set up front with nothing but a sub in the boot. Different people like different things though so you'll need to work out what you want from your stereo

I've bought a set of pioneer 13cm speakers for the front running directly from the HU, but they were £28 from Garlands (near lewisham), and they sound very good, much better than the £14.99 ones I bought before. Next up will be a sub in the boot, then maybe some 6x9s running thru an amp.

Thanks for the advice...
