Specialised Engines

Postby G8AGP on Thu Mar 22, 2007 7:55 pm

Hi, im picking up a mk3 fiesta RST on Sunday and want a full engine rebuild. Theres nothing wrong with the engine but just want a full rebuild on it for piece of mind basically as im going to be using it as a show car so plan to keep it for a few years. I spoke to Specialised Engines regards to a engine rebuild and explained my situation. They told me that for £1,400 they will fully rebuild the engine with basically everything brand new on the engine and that it would come with a 12 month guarantee. They would supply pictures of proof that all the things they say they will be replacing etc.....

Now my question is has people on here used Specialised Engines to do any work on there car. Like most companys ive heard good and bad things about them so undecided on what and where to go :-?

Stay away from the Fat Man in Grays! :o He is a cowboy!! YEE-haa!! Seriously I had a hell of a bad time with those people when they built me "stage 3 2.0 zetec" for my previous Rs1800. :x

Obviously this is my own personal experience with this company, I DO recognise that many people have had a good service from them too! - Just what they built for me must have been made of playdough given how reliable it was!!

I'd look elsewhere if I were you - there's far better and more proffesional/helpful/skilful companies to choose from.

My mate had a 1900 cvh turbo engine off them a few years ago with modified cylinder head.
He was having a few problems with it and year or so later he took it apart and it was a bodge and a half with incorrect parts used and the head wasnt the spec he paid for

Lol "cowboys" is a generic term for inept tradesmen who carry out shoddy work, take your cash then run!

In all seriousness, here's my story:

I had a lovely 1995 Java Blue RS1800 which I took to specialised in 2001 for a 2.0 for 1.8 swap and for the 2.0 to be one of their "stage 3" items (headwork, cams, overbored, verniers etc) The car already had a unichip wich I upgraded to omex for the engine swap and was mapped accordingly on a rolling road after the ngine was run-in using a base-map and not going over 3k rpm etc.

I treated this engine with respect and ran it in very gently, however it seemed to drink oil like it was free and had slight "piston-slap" which made me cross! :x It ended up letting go on me on the m3 with a cracke No3 &4 piston between the ring lands, Specialised would have no part in paying for the damage themselves even though the engine had only covered 2000 miles :x Once rebuilt and run-in AGAIN I upgraded to Throttle bodies and DTA management it started REALLY breathing and using oil so I took it back only for it to be rebuilt AGAIN! :x On the M20 later that week (running it in @65mph in 5th!) a vernier cam pulley fell apart as the allen timing screws weren't torqued correctly :x Extensive head damage was caused and my car was off the road again! :x

The car was never reliable the whole time I had a specialised engine, despite the car having proprly mapped management, run in correctly, adequate cooling and driven carefully.

I ended up cutting my losses and going to Connaught Competition Engines who uncovered all kinds of horrors such as cheap, nasty engine-reconditioning pistons being used instead of the forged ones I paid for and some truly horrific valve lapping and head porting:x Once connaught re-built it I had a 220bhp n/a zetec that put out 220bhp all day and used much less oil and was 100% reliable, speaks for itslef really mate
