Spoilt for choice
So... I have money coming through from a crash I had almost a year ago, and I'm going to be getting an every-day-type car with some of the money (about a grand of it). This will mean I can take my xr2i off the road to make way for improvements/repairs. (yey).
But.... I don't know what I want...
I once had an mb2 civic which was bullet proof, looked good, and I wouldn't mind another, but it was a bit heavy on fuel.
I had a mk3 Mondeo and it was the comfiest barge in the world. I could have slept in that car quite easily. But, as mk3 mondeos tend to do, it blew up.
After this I got a vectra b which again was nice. Not AS nice, but at £450 you can't complain. Dead simple, good on juice, spacious, nice daily driver. But this let go too, and although not too expensive to fix, it was cheaper to put the fiesta back on the road. So I sold the vectra and did just that.
Now I can't just put the money into the fiesta cos we need to visit family in Kent (we live in Brotton) every so often, so another car is a must.
What do you guys reckon? I'm tempted by a 306 gti6. 167bhp from the factory, looks gorgeous, and a good one costs just a grand.
BUT... although personally I think it's one of the best looking cars ever made, It's not a Ford. Not only is it not a Ford, but it's French. Lol.
So, what do you think? And if anyone's thinking of selling me something of theirs, I can't promise a date because, as I'm sure you're aware, insurance companies notoriously take their time with things like this lol

Re: Spoilt for choice
my mate had a gti6 and absolutely loved it only thing I would say is with them your alot better of spending good money to get a good one and they aren't that great on fuel either for a 2l na with 6 speed, I don't know what cars your into but there's a lot of different cars you could get for a grand and tbh if it was just a daily nowadays I'd be looking at a diesel tbh especially these new engines good power output especially after a re map and still stupid mpg lol my mate who had the gti6 got made redundadent and had to sell it but he got a 306 2l hdi afterwards and that was stupid on fuel! could rag the funlumps off it all day long and would still easily give 45mpg+ was shocking! lol especially when ur sat in a rs turbo that gives me 20mpg if I drive real nice

Re: Spoilt for choice
Lol yeah I've heard nothing but praise for the 306 hdi. I know a few people who have had them and loved them. Diesel would be better too for obvious reasons.
I'd like to stay ford though if I can but if I broaden my search there's so many cars. Maybe a diesel a4 or a bora.
Might see what escorts or mk2 mondeos I can see on eBay

Re: Spoilt for choice
gotta admit of love a st24 or newer st mondy everyone loves a good v6!! lol although if keepin the mrs happy and the wallet healthy why not opt for a st tdci ? or if they're expensive a nice spec tdci they are good engines give good economy and can sound/go we'll if u get bored of being standard what size motor u looking at getting? the newer fiestas and focus with te 1.6 tdci is quite a good engine, not sluggish at all for a 1.6 diesel and they too can be epic on fuel lol gotta admit after you look at these newer diesels ad start diving them diesel is goin to be the way forward soon! don't think I could tho I'd miss the noise of a petrol the revs and knowing I have a rev limiter

Re: Spoilt for choice
Yeah I've driven my girlfriend's gttdi golf loads and while the power is good and it's good on juice, having to change gear really early is annoying. It's like having half a gearbox lol.
As for a newer tdci fords I only have a grand ish tops to spare so I doubt I'll be able to afford a good one of those. And an earlier tdci like another mk3 Mondeo (my last one was a duratec he) will only break and cost me an arm and a leg when the fuel system lets go which is unfortunate cos they drive really nicely.
I'm definitely thinking Mondeo/escort/focus but the choice from other marques in that kind of category is good too. There's the bora, the a4, accord, the primera's not bad. Then there's still the good old 306 hdi lol. Argh decisions! Good job I have a while till the money comes through otherwise I'd buy anything just so I didn't have to decide anymore haha

hang on.. 306 one of the best looking cars?! good god man go to specsavers
for a grand you can buy many many different cars! just choosing lol
i know what id do, id go for a mk3 capri, but its not going to be very reliable for everyday use, so unless you enjoy using your tool back in the boot, id suggest the mondeo ST24 myself, always wanted one, my mates just sold one for just over £400 with 12 months mot...
mentally great value for money, be stupid not to imo

Lol yeah they look mint lowered mate. J know they're French but still... lovely. Lol.
Anyway.... Yeah a nice st24 will do very nicely indeed. Just a matter of waiting for the insurance company now while my fiesta's 1/4 panel slowly rots cos I'm too poor to fix it. Hopefully it'll come through quick and I can take it off the road again. Fingers crossed

They are actually a really good looking little hatch, and the diesel lump in them will go on and on and on with a modicum of grunt and high economy.

I'll only have about a grand mate unfortunately. Been looking at Volvo s40 t4 lol. Old man car with 200 bhp. Now I just need to convince the missus it's "sensible"

prices of xr2;s have gone way too high for me now so im considering a mk4 golf turbo next

Re: Spoilt for choice
I'm a storeman in the trade myself so parts aren't as much of an issue. Although my girlfriend has a mk5 golf so I know too well how dear vw bits are even at cost price.
Sticking with the fiesta is a good call I reckon, and driving home tonight with the sun out was beauty in it. Just needs work and I got put off cos I'm lazy haha. But I do want it off the road so I can work on it. I do need a daily that can take us to the other end of the country in comfort. Yeh other half won't like an old fiesta lol

had a lovely sunny week here in south wales, no snow, although ive spotted tiny flecks of it now and then
i think a mk5 or mk6 zetec s be a smart car for a run around, parts are cheap as and theyre meant to be a right corker to drive

I'm in Middlesbrough. Was sunny and warm all day lol. And yeah I had a 1.4 mk6 and loved it to bits. There's some awesome b-roads over the moors near where I live and that car was brilliant on them (once you finally got it up to speed) lol. Good chassis on them and with things like air con it was comfy too

Yeah countless times. There's a massive round trip which is like rally car territory the whole way it's so much fun lol. If you do it on google maps, you go from guisborough, to castleton, to hutton-le-hole, to helmsley, to stokesly. So much fun but notorious with bikers so gotta be careful lol.

you know i was shocked the other day, my dad got a new works van, its a Connect T200, i popped the bonnet.. with a key undignifyingly and found it h ad a clearly recognisable Lynx engine.. okay was rather new only done 7k, and was very vamped up, but stik a 2012 lynx engine... thought they died with the mk1 focus

They are a more robust engine than the dv6 1600 that all the other small vans seem to have, they don't mind not being serviced, the dv6 blows turbos due to carboned oilways when the miss services which normally writes cars/vans off lol
