Im doing it myself tonight and
1) How many layers of what type of primer do people recommend?
2) How many coats of paint?
3)How long to leave to dry?

Im taking my car off the road after i get back from Halfords tonight till wednesday so i think this should be enough time. Ive gotta use the car wednesday night.

Any suggestions?

The thing is, ive had trouble with 'flaking' on the interior panels and i REALLY dont want this to happen on my mirrors. That WOULD look very, (and i express this term) VERY poor!

So what do people think on how many layers? Ive got doo-doo loads or primer at home so its not a problem. But is there a limit on how many you can put on? Will it make it a stronger bond the more you put on or will it deterioate after a certain number?

PLEASE HELP! Im doing it tonight so i need to know ASAP! Pwitty Pweeze

humm....i sanded my mk3.5's down 1st (dont know what finish yours have already bein differnt style).

About 4 coats of Primer (specially made for plastics). its worth using!!. with about 15 min between each layer. Let dry over night.

Then sanded the primer lightly to get a smooth finish, then used the radient red colour. Slowly building the layers up, about 5- (depends how thicky you spray) all thogether. Let dry over night.

Next another very light sanding, and lastly about 5 layers of laquer to seal the paint and give it a nice shine......

BUT BE WARNED!!......if your gonna be sprayin in this weather, it might be inadvisable.
As you usally get condensation after each layer. and if your not careful you will end up traping it bewtwwen each layer and it will flake!!!.

This happened to be as i was laquering....and at was looking good until the 3rd layer when it totally dulled!!, as the damp atmosphere ruined the laquer.......if you can heat the mirrors up infront of a fire/heater before you start as the paint will bond better. but if you go out side consendation will occur qucikly.

try and get sum where where you use a hair dryer and keep them warm as they dry.

search for previous posts usin the search facility at the top

hope it helps, and dont rush it!!!....

Cheers for the advice.
I made a start on it last night. Went to halfords and got some paint mixed up, come home, whipped of me mirrors (looks so much smoother without them!), went it the shed and started. I put on about 2 layers of primer and dry them enough for me to touch it without leaving fingerprints. Then apllied the paint really lightly from far away. Left it to sink in, then applied another layer all round. Its a right bugger to spray these mirrors cos of the concurves and dips and things. Cant do it all in one, you have to do one bit, let it dry, turn it over and do the other bits.

Anyway, one mirror and plate are drying at the moment at home in my air-tight shed. So i'll be starting the second tonight. Gonna take a day off work tomorrow and thursday and finish it nicely and start on my boot install

Don't forget to flat the paint back smooth before you polish it (or before you're lacquering if it's metallic/pearl) - 1500 grid and loads and loads of soapy water

Yeah i've got some DTM mirrors to spray (pearl paint). The plan:

-Sand mirrors with 600 wet and dry
-Apply plastic primer, several coats. Should i sand in between coats? 800 wet and dry?
-1200 wet and dry before paint. Several layers, 1200 in between coats?
-Lacquer, how many layers?

I think i'll wait for the weather to improve though, its bloody cold even inside the house.
