?ST170 engine/box in Mk3 Fiesta? ?RS/Zetec conversioninstead

Postby dr g on Wed Oct 27, 2004 10:11 pm

Hi there, one of the cars I own is a Mk3 Ford Fiesta which I'm thinking of transplanting a different engine into.

Is it possible to put the Focus ST170 engine and box in a MK3 Fiesta?

If the 6-speed box doesn't fit or whatever, is it possible to use the existing Fiesta gearbox?

Does anyone know where I could buy one of these engines? All the breakers yards I've tried have never had an ST170 in.

I've been in two minds as whether to simply do an RS Turbo engine transplant and then tune it. Either that or a naturally aspirated 2litre Zetec swap. What do you guys think I should do?

Any replies are more than welcome.

This is the ST170 post http://www.fiestaturbo.com/phpBB/viewto ... ight=st170
Opinion on here is the FRS engine is not that brilliant. A mildly modded Zetec engine with a fairly small turbo and a charge cooler on it.

Thehuzman:- Thanks for the quick reply! The link included a lot of valuable points.

I had spoken to Ian Howell about the Zetec Turbo route but it seemed to work out rather expensive if getting him to do it all. Would you suggest getting the parts together then paying someone to fit them

By FRS are you meaning Focus RS or Fiesta RS Turbo?

Keep any ideas and suggestions coming!

Meant Focus RS. If you have dont have a Fiesta turbo at the moment then its a good idea to transfer the running gear from a car being broken. As the FRST's loom is the cheapest way to run turbo management, and it will run a turbo'd zetec no problem. It's dead easy to get 200bhp out of a CVH.
If you have a zetec engined car and want to go down the N/A route try the search engine, because someone posts about this swap at least once a week. It's a dead easy swap too.

Thehuzman:- I tend to agree. CVH Turbo is nice and affordable, readily tunable. 2.0L Zetec seems good though, tune na to about 200bhp or go down the turbo route.

The car is only a 1.1L LX but I've already bought an XR2i for the parts. The engine in that is great but is not powerful enough for me to transplant it in. I'll part out all the bits of it I don't need. I've kept various parts like the centre console, bodykit etc. Already made more money sellling bits of it than I paid for the car in the first place.

Any more suggestions or ideas?

You will need a FRST loom as the XR2i on isn't adaptable. Cylinder heads are the same bottom end is different.
Transfer the suspension from the 2i over to your LX, (take it you have got the 8v not 16v engine)
You can pick up standard turbos for not a lot, but if your building it out of a different engine anyway go for a T3(from Escort turbo) as 200 is a bit too much for a T2

Thehuzman:- Do you think it would be best to get the whole RST set-up from someone inclusive of loom, ECU etc or to piece it together?

I'm going to put over the suspension, roll bars etc from the XR2i as you suggest and probably also the EFI fuel tank and fuel pump.

Some people will no doube feel it is stupid to work on a base model - but it was my first car and that's why it's still been kept these last few years (despite me moving on to bigger more expensive cars for everyday use).

Thanks again!

JAmes, how goes it! But, seriously James what is your opinion on the old Fiesta. The panels, suspension, brakes and respray will be getting done anyway so why not a nice engine?

I know your probably looking for about 200 bhp. I'd say your best option for ease and cost would be the 19.cvh with a bigger turbo, intercooler and custom map.

It'll go in no problems and the parts are fairly available.

Also the 1.9 keeps a bit of the yank in there.

Quick qu bout the ST170 engine.

I've always thought that the 170 is 170Bhp? Is this correct?

And what engine size is it? 2ltr?
