Stealthy Setup ???
Right im new to this forum so stick with me.
I have just bought a mk4 fiesta and i want to sort the sounds out on a reletively cheap budget. the catch is i want it all pretty much hidden. The reason for this is i had a corsa B as my first car and i kitted it out with a sony head unit, amplifier, 6x9s bla bla bla but last week it got nicked and then the fuzz found it burnt out, not a scratch left of it but an empty shell. Now my theory is they only stole it for the sounds cos the car wz pretty much worthless.
So due to my car being nicked i have now bought this fiesta. i tried living without a decent sound system but i just cant too it, im addicted to bass. so my plan is to change the standard door speakers to sum better aftermarket ones so they dont fart and distort at high volume. Then to sort the bass side out i want to fit a sub. this is all very well because if any passer-by fancies a 5-finger discount on my stuff they wudnt know i had anything in there by lookin at it because the door speakers will be hidden and the sub in the boot. great plan but to power a sub i would need a decent head unit with a pre-out at the back which my standard ford 6000 rds doesnt have. Fitting a fancy cd player would really defy the point ov keepin things hidden. I did read from another topic on this forum about the speaker to RCA adaptor. from what i could understand i would have to splice this adaptor to an existing rear speaker cable and then wire the amp to this instead of the head unit. Am i right about that bit? and could anyone please tell are they any good if they have it fitted on their car. If they are good then my problem is sorted really because i could run a sub off the factory head unit and the aftermarket door speakers will get rid of the bad distortion of the factory speakers.
So thats my plan anyway, i would like to know if you guys think it will work and more importantly will it be any good. And any advice on what particular components and sub i should use will be greatfully recieved. thanks
ps - Soo sorry its so long, didnt mean for it to be.

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
so you want to have some powerful I.C.E with a lot of bass. but you also want it hidden. ok i can understand that one. but you then want to run some high power amps and speakers with some dodgy adaptors run off the boggo head unit? seems a bit arse about face that one mate. just get a decent head unit with a removable face.

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
As said, if you get a decent headunit with a removable face plate and remove it I doubt you'll have a problem.
The best thing you can do is get some decent security on there. It's already got an immobiliser, but a half-decent alarm will help too. Doesn't have to cost the earth either, as I'm sure you could handle fitting it from your handyness with stereos.

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
Hey guys thanks for your replies. i understand what your trying to say about the removable face plate and i thought exactly the same thing when i bought the cd player for the corsa. I had a removable faceplate and it was taken off when it got nicked so im sure you can understand why im a bit hesitant in gettin another one. I think im just gunna have to bite the bullet and get a decent headunit hoping that lightning won't strike twice. I was having doubts about the adaptor thing myself thats why i wanted to ask if any of you had one fitted and how good it was. Well thanks for your help guys, i'll go shp around for an alarn system en. thank you

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
It'll be hard keeping a sub stealthy unless you have it turned off. The same chives who robbed your last gear probably heard it before they stole it. You can hear subs from hundreds of meters away, so even if it is hidden everyone (unless their particularly stupid) will know that it's a sub going boom boom boom not a standard stereo. Fit a decent alarm before sticking your gear in.

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
It's entirely possible mate, you don't need a face off head unit to have sound quality.
Edders, my setup is standard ford 6000rds unit, those "boggo" adaptors, 2 amps and uprated speakers, and it sounds the nuts, plus completely hidden. Even if you did have a face off unit a thief is still going to think "What else is in there" seeing as you've already upgraded the HU, so you make it look as standard as possible. I'll try and get a video clip later of what I mean.

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
As people have been saying, it is extremely hard to keep a stealthy setup, as the whole point of having a system is for noise.
And putting some 6x9 on the parcel shelf is a dead give away of the car having a possible sub and a decent headunit.
Best way to things safe is, hide the system as best as possible and get a decent alarm to protect it all.
Thats my advice anyway.

I'm getting some pics of my setup later for Fezza_305 and will probably post them up here. There is no way from the outside of the car you can see any of my setup, apart from the stock Ford HU. But even so it is protected by a Toad alarm, no expense spared. I'll try and get a video too to show the volume of it.

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
I am not saying that is impossible to have a stealthly set-up, i am saying it is difficult.
All it takes, even if your audio compenents and stuff are hidden, is someone to notice it when you are drving around, and them seeing it parked up one night.
Out of interest, waht rear speakers have you got and where are they mounted?

M1K3Y_B :I am not saying that is impossible to have a stealthly set-up, i am saying it is difficult.
The technical side of things and hooking things up is not difficult at all. It really is a piece of p*ss

It depends what the mentality of the system's owner is. If you want a stealthy setup keep it quiet anywhere near where you intend to park or leave the car, I would have thought that was common sense. Even so, it's going to take a thief longer to start unbolting door cards and tracing cables whereas a whacking set of 6x9's are fooking easy to rip out.
Out of interest, waht rear speakers have you got and where are they mounted?
I've got a set of Pioneer TS-E1376's mounted in the correct places either side of the parcel shelf - can't be seen from the outside. Up front I've got the standard Ford speakers until I can get some proper components, and a mutant sub + amp package. The amp for the 4 speakers and the amp for the sub are hidden under a thick MDF false floor which is bolted down, so very difficult and time consuming to get out.

Even if you turn the volume down where you intend to park, someone could have seen the car before being driving around with music blaring is what i tried to say.

A mate of mine had a Punto, and used to keep his music on loud whilst he was parking and leaving the car for the night. The thing was broken into twice. Now he turns his tunes down at the end of his road and has had no problems since.

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
Everything in my car is hidden including the 6x9s and the only thing you can see is the stereo where the faceplate removes. I have a Toad Ai606 on my car that's fully specced to have every sensor including proximity and glass break and boot popper. Also got a pager system to tell me if my alarm goes off.
Dreaming of my first FRST....

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
Front door speakers hidden away like u said, get a stealth shelf off ebay for the 6x9s, can probly get one for anythin as little as 30 quid, sub n amp in the boot will be fine, ur problem with a flashy head unit that defeats the point of being stealthy... either get one thats got a removable fascia, or get a JVC Chameleon When u look in from the outside u can barely notice theres anything there.
Also like someone mentioned, if u think someones gunna nick ya car.. get an alarm, better having summin u dont need than not havin summin u do need
Hope it helps

Wtf?
Am I supposed to understand that? Are you saying the speaker to RCA are rubbish? And if you are saying you cant use one cause you need an amp thats exactly what they are designed for...
Could you put that into comprehensible English for us?

even so mate, 6x9's are not the answer to car audio solutions. Put simply you don't need 6x9s for a setup to sound good.
I would recommend an alarm to anyone, but even so, if someone sees your face off head unit they are going to wonder what else is inside. Keep the standard stuff, makes the car look more original, and still sounds just as good as a CD player

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
i mean the kit would enable you to keep the standard stero as you wire the rear speaker wire to the coverter and it makes it into an rca connection aka speaker wire to amp input

Why would he go thrught he effort of hiding the 6x9s if he was leaving the wiring on show.
Pretty pointless?

its just like whats been said really i have a face off my amp under the drivers seat and the sub in the boot
But at the end of the day its the little sticker i have on the window saying there is a clifford alarm fitted
that diturrs them. Unfortunatly i went to school with people(C.H.A.V.S) that did it and the one thing they listen for is the SUB going whislt driving thru town then they find where you live and if they think the alarm is rubbish....then they will have it away no problem....if they want it Trust...they will get it.

Doing me fantasticly Chris Thanks very much! The clip for the removeable buttons is slightly sensitive but hilarity ensues when I accidentally knock it and the buttons go flying
Got the CD Changer adpator which means I can plug any RCA device into it and press CD/EJ 3 times gets the output in perfect quality.
Had to remove your VIN from the radio too lol

good stuff, I used to occasionally knock the faceplate off when changing the volume - however my sister's Ka is exactly the same so I reckon it's a design fault.
@ VIN - I had to put a sticker on it otherwise I'd have only lost/forgot the bloody code

Its definitely a design fault - the 3000 that came out was really easy to knock off (strange thing is that with that radio it was universal, i.e you could use any faceplate and it would work - or your finger over the button!), but my dads Transit was stuck fast

Re: Stealthy Setup ???
i'll be honest and say that i do think speaker-rca adaptors are crap, and even a relatively cheap aftermarket h/u has features that standard ford head units can dream of. i've had the same head unit 6 years now and its still a good un. at the end of the day yes it is nice to have a decent stereo, and with a bit of effort and thought u can get a great sound without having it obvious and/or spending too much.
as for 6x9's, they ain't bad, and they do add volume but having decent speakers at the rear defeats the object, you don't go to a concert and have your back to the stage, do you?
best to get a decent pair of components for the front, best you can afford (or save up if you have to!), and a sub. i'd amp the lot i'd either run 2 amps, or a 4 channel amp with 2 channels bridged for the sub. if you still want some rear fill you can keep the standard rears (i'm still on the standard rear speakers, but then, i don't sit in the back, and they are faded out anyway) or buy some co-ax's, avoid dual cones at all costs, they're pants.
remember it doesn't have to be done all at once, pick quality over quantity, and if you buy nasty stuff in the long run you'll only end up replacing it and it'll work out more expensive, so get what you want from the off!
