Postby dangermouse on Mon Sep 29, 2008 10:46 am

hi peeps
my cars been off road since may and ive run it every now and agen up and down my back road, but ive recently noticed my steering has got really hard turning to one side, i noticed that a gaitor has split on the nearside but doubt it has anything to do with this as it was a new steering rack back in february time, but i wasnt too sure.
any ideas?

Try to replace the crossjoint what comes from steeringcolum to the rack.

Sounds like it could be the Universal Joint.

There around £10 from a Motor Factors or Ford will replace them for £60 [£20 for the UJ and £40 for an hours labour].

The "cross joint" that wittmann is talking about is called a universal joint like fiend said. It is common for it to go as its a wear and tear part.

so it has nothing to do with the CV joint? the only reason i ask is because im not exactly a mechanic but i know a lil bit and theres a split boot on the steering rack but i wouldnt have thought that it would be the problem as i havent driven it anywhere

I wouldn't think a split boot the cause the steering to go dodgy.
