Street Wars, Devon today. Drag racing

Postby heeman10 on Sat Jun 07, 2008 10:11 pm

Steve and I went along to Street Wars at Smeatharpe Airfield today for a spot of 1/8th mile drag racing. I took my Mk3 Fiesta, he took his £300 stripped out Mitsubishi GTO, and we were the second pairing on the strip.

I'd love to say that my 200bhp/tonne stood up admirably to his 350+bhp/1.5 tonnes/4WD, but boy did he bin me  Only one car all day long eventually snuck under Steve's quickest time - a heavily modified, stripped out track Puslar, and Steve buggered second gear on only his second run of the day :(

I got a whopping 33 runs in throughout the day, and I'm amazed the gearbox stood up to all the abuse! Tomorrow will be busier, but today was sparse enough to be able to loop straight back round and go again. I did that for a good couple of hours, hence my accumulation of runs

My best was a 9.255 at about 81mph I think, but a Williams Clio with a worked 172 engine, stripped to the max, wasted me with an 8.9 second pass. If the times seem slow, it's because the airfield is rutted, broken concrete, which is a great recipe for chronic axle tramp in a FWD with any torque to it. Same for everyone though, and it was a real challenge!

I thoroughly enjoyed going four runs consecutively against a 300bhp Impreza and beating him by a good couple of lengths each time over the 1/8th mile. Thumbs up every time, and a determined effort from him over and over! :)

We saw JayC there - anyone else? I'll put some pics up later if I can be bothered. I only left the strip at 8:45pm after arriving at 12pm, so am a bit tired! :D :Q

Thought it was on tonight and tomorrow day time, would have popped down if I knew it was during the afternoon. When is the next one? Do just pay for the day then and have as many runs as you can fit in?

You should pop out to the air field by me next time sw-pc.com have a sprint day.

Mixon is the SW-PC sprint down at the aerodrome? and as for smeatharp yeah it is both days bud, but closes earlier tomorrow, to be honest it was pretty quiet today, I think you'll find the sundays are more active.. either that or people have got bored with it, I think they said its 35 if you race both days for access to the strip, tho they really need to change to quater mile..

Its actually alright when its quiet, it gave me a chance to half teach myself launches and i could pretty much go up and go up again without much waiting.. although i didnt plan on racing originaly so I had to rent a pisspot helmet :)

I ended up doing the same time as a 1.8t audi a3 so that was a little bit of a result for the old girl, but the lad didnt want to race for some reason..

It was good to see your car in the flesh finaly James, as I drove past I thought "hmm thats a nice fiesta".. then I had to double take when I seen LEC.. your pidgeon sings alot better when its not encoded into an avi, I didnt see you and steve race but I didnt turn up until 4, my bed got the better of me, and I gather his gear was well lunched by then, I did have a giggle when I first noticed the jap crap plate, hadent seen the thread on here originaly

I did forget to ask how buisness is going, how rude  but ide have to assume its going very well :Q

oh and steve.. nice hat ;) glad you didnt have these denims pants ive heard about on aswell :oooh:
