Hi guys,

Just bought a 400w sub and 300w amp for a nice tidy sum (cheap!)

Its a 10". Do I need a special size box for this?

Cheers guys!

I'm building the box myself, for a challenge. Do you know the average dimensions for a 10" box? If I've read correctly, its got to be 1ftx1ftx1ft

Cheers,
Nick

EDIT: Cheers Gaz, just found the dimensions on Motor-World. That one was 0.75 cubic feet so 1 cubic foot should do fine.

Cheers!!

not a very good example but here ya go :

Image

the one with the sub in is a sealed box and the other one is a ported one ( hole in the top).

the ported one made the sub i have sound worse but made a mates sub sound better - make a sealed box first and if it sounds crap then port it.

So basically, make a sealed box. If it sounds crap, drill a f*cking great hole in the top? lol :D:D

Nope. It was budget lol. £17 for the sub, so aren't expecting much, but at the mo, looks like this: (sorry for VERY poor paint drawing!)

Image

Basically 4 bits of wood, one at the top, one at the bottom, and two at the sides, so it's completely open.

As I say its a 10" 400W sub, no voice coils or anything.

metalhead, a bit of DnB, trance, dance, rock on occasion. Quite a lot of Pendulum stuff...

John R, I'll take a look at that guide. Cheers!

Cool mate, cheers. So far I have enough materials to do it amateurish. I've got the carpet, silicone sealant, and a discount card for a DIY store so can get all the MDF I need :D. Reading some other guides I need a box 1ft cubed.

If your subs not a free air it will require presure to create a good deep sound so yu will need a box with all 4 sides and a top and bottom otherwise you mightaswell just bolt it to ya shelf and let it rattle away

im just going from my experiances with them however it will allways depend on what size box and what driver you use!
ive had a lightning audio sub in a diy 40 litre sealed box which would decimate your guts and a jbl sub in a sealed box which was punchy as hell, when you hear rock or metal with a ported box it sounds pants imo!

No panic. I've got enough MDF to build a house now, with proper sealent and all carpeting, so when saturday comes it *should* be bassier and better!

Thanks to all for your help!

I really wish people would actually write clear legible sentences then their meaning would not be messed about.
Guys you agree on the same thing whats your arguement?

As it goes, ported boxes will not sound pants if the sub performs best in a ported box and it is designed properly based the subs T/S
Ported or sealed it shouldnt matter what music you listen to, if you have a high quality sub and properly designed box ported will 9/10 sound as good as each other(obviously preference rules), while the ported will drop lower but will lack the punch of a sealed box.

And as for your Lightning audio 'decimating' anyones guts...id be very very very very suprised if a £50 sub could cause damage to a daffodile let alone a human body that can withstand more than 160db
Although the amount of distortion its producing from your 3000w SPLX amplifier im willing to bet you could quite easlily make my ears bleed
