Suckin Diesel...

Postby Adam_Oakden on Fri Aug 27, 2004 7:23 pm

Im getting a new motor and ive been offered an L Reg Astra 1.7td

What im wondering is with a diesel what sort of performance mods can you still do? I know you can put and exhaust on but what does it sound like? Can you still put things on like induction kits and what else can you whack on???

Any help appreciated, Thanks

Adam :D

I'm afraid there isn't THAT much you can do really, maybe give it an extra 1 or 2 psi and a touch more fuel, but you won't get many gains from exhausts and filters. Sorry to hear you own a Vauxhall though :(

there is tons you can do now from air filters, exhausts, get it chipped, turn up the boost, fit a big front mount intercooler, and i`ve even heard of a fella fitting a fancy new turbo he bought from germany :D

:lol::lol: And I thought people were getting the hang of diesel now! An L reg Astra won't be chippable, it's all mechanical AFAIK, so you could tape the chip to the dash and see what happens if you want :bonkers: As for an air filter...no use unless you have a good cold air feed to it, you would gain no more than 1bhp, that's for sure. An exhaust could give a small gain, but certainly not worth the money you spent on it. A better intercooler would help a bit, but given that an L reg Astra isn't one of the finest turbo diesels out there, it will be running pretty low pressure. My general feeling is....leave it as it is and save for a better engine/car :)

Well you cant refer to it like that, Brand new diesel engines like HDi's etc and ones from VW's etc produce loads of power and torque because they are much more modern and have more tuning potential.

mackers - go wash your mouth out  Like Max says, you really can't compare the engine in a 1993/4 Astra to that of a modern day diesel. The Astra might make something like 80-90bhp from that 1.7, but a commonrail, 16 valve engine of today is making much more torque and power from a similar capacity. The Astra engine's roots are probably 20 years old, and might even be made by Isuzu, as some of the diesel Astras engines were.

Allard Turbos have built up a nice Mk4 Golf GT TDI which will be quick. I think they were aiming to complete it around summer last year or something, but I don't know what figures it's produced.

the 1.7 TD engine that goes in the astra is a fair engine. They responde well to the usual tunning mods: headwork, reprofile the cam and more boost.
The std turbo is quite small for bigger power and is a laggy one.

Ok. Its not a VW 150bhp engine but can be made to go fast and still be way more realiabel than any VW engine

btw, tomorrow I'm going to drive a std 1.7TD astra with 285k km (+- 180k miles) and still pulls like brand new. :D
