Suspension differences
Hi guys
Anyone know what the differences are between an 1100cc and a XR2i or FRST. Now go silly and start flaming me, I know the shocks are different , what about the rest.
Antiroll bar mountings, strength of the components etc? front and rear.
If I wanted to fit discs up front, i,m guessing an 1100 has drums as standard, will the mounting holes be there.
Thanks guys

Hi,
I don't know much but I might share a few points...
1. 2i are gas shocks, 1.1 are oil shocks
2. different springs... 25mm lower and probably stiffer too
3. anti-roll bar mounts only on the gas shocks
4. all cars have discs at front, both 2i/RST and 1.1 have drums at rear
5. 2i/RST discs are vented (to let the heat escape), 1.1 discs are solid
6. because vented discs are thicker, the calipers need to be different too
7. you can put 2i/RST calipers and discs on 1.1 no problem same mounting
Hope it helps.

RS and later XR2i shocks let the car sit 25mm lower, however most 1.6 8v XR2is were standard height. I put a set of the 8v XR2i shocks on my car, they did make it better, but there's no substitute for a sports suspension kit and ARB/crossmember etc.

RS (and some, probably later, XRs) have rear anti roll bar.
RS/XR have bigger drums at rear.
RS/XR have front s-shaped crossmember and anti roll bar.
RS (and some, probably later, XRs) have 3 point ball joint mounting on lower arms, ball joint positioned different to other models for more castor.
RS lower arms are slightly longer to give more camber.
RS Steering rack may be different or it may just be track rod ends to match longer arms.
XR/RS lower arm carries have holes for mounting the s-shape crossmember, and front anti roll bar.
Hubs - I think - are different on XR/RS.
