Suspension Top Mounts

Problem or technical question?

Suspension Top Mounts

Postby kingabe on Wed Jan 14, 2015 2:42 pm

Sorry if this has been covered 1000 times. When the car is jacked up how much movement/play is there on the front suspension top mounts :-?

Cheers in advance

Too vague a question I'm afraid! If your finding it tough to turn the wheels you can lube them up but might just be easier to replace them, not much work and only cheap to do.

What I mean is when the car is jacked up, the top of the struts seem to move alot from above ie in the engine bay. Also when i turn the wheels the springs seem to be binding at the top when viewed from within the arch. They seem tight when the weight is on them. Is this just hence the name "floating strut!!?"

Still hard to diagnosis. I don't know your level of technical skills so forgive me if this sounds basic. When jacked up and you turn the wheel by hand, it will be stiff as the weight of the strut and suspension as it hangs will put pressure on the top mount however it shouldn't be 'that' stiff. The standard top mounts can perish so it may be worth dropping the strut to check the condition

They should be tight in the top rubbers, shouldn't have play.
