The new XR Project
a friend of mine has had a 2i for about 7 months now, since he moved in round the corner from me, hes just had it to play around with and do up till he passed his test, but still with no licence and realising how much it will be to insure for him being only 21 hes decided to let it go
so i went round to have a look at it, ive only seen it briefly in the past
on inspection its got the usual rot, filler cap is blistered, signs of it being on the inside through the boot are visible too
the rear arch turrets are badly corroded also, both sides
the front foot wells have some rust, along the inner sill and a 50p sized hole in the arch, similar on the passengers side
apart from there thats the only rust ive found so far,
next areas of concern are a damaged drivers wing, its currently not running, due to a fueling fault
theres a bad repair job on the driver side arch, its got mounts of fibreglass on it atm, hashed wiring behind the cd player, using white electrical blocks
a missmatch of a keyset, the ignition barrel is from my Previous Si,
few bumps and scraps in the paint, also its been broken into earlier in its life, the door frames aint been repaired, a knackered steering lock and snapped column surround (plastics)
but the attempt was a waste thanks to it having a Lazerline immobiliser fitted
admittedly im aiming a bit high, but im interested to learn this sort of body repair and heres a good case of it
so after talk ive got it down to a nice cheap price, gave a deposit and hes let me take it home, the rest of the dosh will be paid once hes got me the log book
here she is
J reg 91, mercury grey XR2i, ive checked it for HPI, not scrapped, reported stolen or written off, its had 6 owners
its come with all the original bits, but missing a blue stripe or two
pictures
a rare addition, he was gonna rip it off because it was hanging down, i yelled dont thats a rare accessory!
small mount of spares, including the original airbox
yep, theyre my Si's original seats
89,000 genuine miles, and again these are my previous Si's white dial covers
these are going!
heres some of the rust stated
passengers side
its a good thing im trained to do things like this at work
another thing to go!
other rust parts
the fuel issue is theres no fuel coming through the pipe prior the filter, it was running a few weeks back, plenty of power on tap im told, ive had it "running" using "start ya baxtered" a easy start type can
mind a back fire almost took my old mans hand off
does anyone know of a fuel pump related issue that would cause this?
ive put £10 of petrol in it i can hear the relay click upon ignition, then once again after a second
also the pump primes making its buzzing noise
plans are to sort the rust, tidy it up and then im not sure, use it by mywself or someone in the family, or sell it on, we will see
ill keep this updated with progress

I think it looks good Jony, alright plenty of things to sort, but if you want to take them on, whats stoppin you. There aint really many of these left because people give up to easy.
Going back to the fuel problem, is there no fuel going into the filter??? But the fuel pump does work?

Re: The new XR Project
I would just break the damned thing; that shell looks bad now but given the condition of what you've found so far, I'd be very concerned about what else you might find. If you're determined, then get the carpets and seats out and the seals off and check it over thoroughly for damage and to make sure it's not bent (as in banana shaped). If you do that, and post up pics, it's likely the folks who've rebuilt their RS's in the past will offer some constructive advice, but on the basis of what I've seen thus far (and the fact it's a non-runner) I'd really strongly consider breaking it unless you are sure you have the time and money to sort it out - but then it's a keeper, you'll never make money on it...
Bear in mind that if you break it you should make some okay money on it for the time it'll cost you - you could put all that into the Si to make it significantly more interesting.
CRAIG : LOL @ tagline on sig.

Re: The new XR Project
its not the worst ive seen, and it savable, so if you can do it mate, good luck to ya.
on the fuel side of it, if the pumps priming then get the fuel line off the filter and see if fuels being pumped up, if its not, then check the pipe isnt blocked, not that theres really anyway it could, but, the internals of the pump might of broken down so its running, but there no impeller to pump the fuel, it wouldnt be the first time ive seen that.
could also be the throttle damper, but you need to find out if your getting fuel to the filter before you look elsewhere really

Re: The new XR Project
nothing quite hits you like the general publics opinion
im not going any futher untill ive checked it more carefully, i.e getting the seats out and carpet up, and the bumpers off
im not fooling myself thinking theres money or a profit to be made, its simply a project for me to learn and keep me busy, thats why i didnt want to spend anymore than what can be made back if i hit a wall, before spending much money
the rust can be sorted quite cheaply its just time and efforts, i can cut up a single mk3 at a scrappy ad get all the panels i need in one go and i doubt it be much too
it may need two sills would would be bought new, atm im not sure what route to take the rear turrets, either to cut out the whole lot or just cut out the rust and put new shaped panels in (not just plating it like the green mk3 i had)
its the same amount of work needed as the green mk3 i did needed and that was alot less worthy of a car than an Xr
im thankful for the advice, but so far its all been very negetive
also, i dont want the money going into my Si, ive spent enough on it as it is, i need a project to take my spending on or ill end up fudgekin the Si up by going too far like i did the red mk4
im prepared for what it needs doing and i want to do so, ill dig the mig out, get some 1mm plate metal and away i go, cost nothing so far
thanks mate, no theres nothing coming tot he filter, taken the banjo connection off (didnt know these had them, the Si has them clips)
cranked it over looking at the pipe and nothing comes through, iw as just wondering if any sensor or relay will stop it sending fuel through, before i start ripping the tank off lol

Re: The new XR Project
no theres not mate, when it primes it should pump fuel up, doingit a few times will get fuel to the filter but if you have done that and still have no fuel its time to drop the tank and find out whats going on, as getting it running should be the first thing you do before anything else

Re: The new XR Project
Thats nothing but a breaker.
i presume this manifold has been paid for, if you are now putting deposits on cars and spending a tenner on fuel for them?
Much as I am sure you will cry about even being asked, i would like a answer, as it is now being seriously considered that your account on here is suspended until it is paid.

Re: The new XR Project
just had it running, sounds to be in good order, im happy enough to get the pump sorted and dig for more rust, depending on what else i can find, because no doubt theres something else hiding, ill crack on with stripping it
i dont need comments like that thank you nomad, one mans scrap car is anothers play thing

Perhaps you should start your own forum for you project threads, with only you as a member? then you will never have to hear different opinions.
I have locked this thread, and your other thread, until you have paid for this manifold. We have had complaints about it, and you are clearly spending money elsewhere, when you really should be paying this debt to another member.

Re: The new XR Project
irreleivent update on this, i found far too much rot than it was worth, and considering the guy wanted £150 for it, i would have been a fool, so he had it back
but now hes scrapped it kept the body kit then tried to flog it all off to me for £50!

Re: The new XR Project
For £150 you prbably would have been better taking the kit ect off and selling the bits and scrapping it yourself. Oh well at least you'v not lost anything.
