The Recaro Fiesta - the rebuild begins
Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 26/10
jayrs :cheers guys.
dany, both rear arches are red, as will the spoiler, so its got plenty on there and clark loves it
its come apart again now though, no doors, bonnet or boot, although the new boot lid will be stipped and trial fitted for hinge location before i start priming.
oh, and the reason for that is theres 2 brand new complete hinges to go on the car
paul, it will be std looking when finished
how about engine spec ect and rims

engine spec is staying thr same as far as i know, its running a T3 anyway and that will remain, the down pipe and exhaust is being sorted while i got it, other than that, unless clarks got something planned thats it.
rim wise, clark will be putting he rare FRST rims back on

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 18/11
update time.
recently ive had other things going on so havent had the time to spend on the car as i would of liked, but none the less, ive been doing bits here and there.
prep work seemed to take forever, but the finished job is only as good as the prep, so i didnt skimp or cut corners, if anything went over the top, but never mind.
70% of the shell is now primed.
the roof, passanger rear quarter and boot shut inc back panel are still to be primed.
The passanger rear quarter is being taken back to complete bare metal due to the amount of marks in the black protective coating and bits of surface rust within the scratches on it, so that will be taken off with the poly wheel then sanded to prep the metal for etch primer......
which clarks doing he wanted to have a go at painting and stuff, so i said when hes over he can prep the panel and prime it, and he will be over for a few days next week so watch this space.
thats about it really, prob some updates from me and/or clark over the next coming week, im not expecting to paint the car this year now, rather just get it all primed and protected andthen call it, it for this year, but i will paly it by ear for now and see how i get on time wise to spend on the car.
oh, and i wasnt happy as i got a reaction on the scuttle panel i dont know why though
some random pics
and the reaction, i dunno why this happened there, must of been a primer or paint i put on earlier on, but no where else reacted ah well, just something else to sort out, rather it be in the primer than in the paint

The white base should make the red proper bright and shiney!
Looks good though! Did you have to warm the workshop up to get that coat on?

I love it !
It only takes one spec of grease/oil to create a reaction.
When I paint little bits at ford with a spray can for customers the prep is the most important thing. f**k that up and you end up just wasting paint & time.
Can't wait to get over there on Wednesday

believe it of not, the primer is grey but yeah, would make a good base for red
yeah got the workshop warm, had it about 19 before turning the heaters off for priming
cheers jony, reactions are something i always fear when painting
andy, cheers dude, all in good time though mate, your get yours sorted im sure
clark, the reactions are nopt because of oil or grease, if it were your end up with fish eyes and stuff, this reaction is due to the primer reactiong to a paint or primer thats under it.
if you remember, i primed and painted the conner bits of the scuttle before fitting the wings, i cant remember fully, but i might of rattle can painted it to start with then keyed up and top coated again with paint from the gun, and i can only assume that while flatting down and feathering out the paint etc on the corners that ive exposed the rattle can paint in places which is what its reacted too i cant honestly remember if i rattle can top coated or not though
i dont think its the ford primer that reacted, as ive primed over that in different places and had no reaction at all, plus being a brand new panel, theres not old paint for it to react too, so im a bit stumped as to why and what with it.
but $hit happens, its not too bad, it can be sorted, could of done without it, but its just 1 of many things that can go wrong when painting, and 1 of many reasons i get pi$$ed of and dont like painting

Cheers dude.
Next in line is my xr2 mate, then ill be taking a break front this sort if thing
But tbh mate I wouldn't taken on a project like this for anyone again I dont think, not to this degree thats for sure.
There will be a update at the weekend, but we had a late one today as we done other things such as a scrap yard run this morning, started the beam etc, and Friday will be a case of get home, showered dressed, grub and out on the piss so no time to update Friday, hell it would take me a hour to list the tools and equipment Clark broke so far

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 25/11
update
a fair bit was done, although for the 5 days clark was over you might think we could of done more, but only 1 day we spent there till late at night.
plus we done other things, like spent a day on his mini, a morning at the scrappy, a moring doing something else and stuff like that, plus we had things fight us along the way.
like the rear beam bushes, they took some getting out, i didnt expect them to give up as much fight as they did, cutting a slot to take the pressure off wasnt good enough as they were rusted in
we also spend time trying to aline the boot lid but gave up and removed it, i think im trying to be too fussy about its aliment, this is prob due to not ever seeing a mk3 boot lid inc lights 100% alined plus as ive said to clark before, i susepct the tailgate is warped slighty due to the 1 gas strut, but ill get back on it another day when im feeling the love for spending the time on it.
anyway, work done
rear beam stripped, painted, new bushes fitted inc drums painted, ill build it back up when i get a chance and the paints fully dried.
lower arms stripped, i pressed the bushes out and removed the ball joints, once clark gets the poly bushes and the new ball joints ill fit the bushes, paint the arms and fit the ball joints, but again thats at a later stage.
i spent a long time on the rear quarter, as the surface of the panel was crap due to scratches and chips, i took it back to bare meteal, clark weanted to have a go on the spray gun, so with some guidance, clark etch primed it, and done a good job took considering the primer was like piss water, with only 1 small run which near enough dried out, i lightly nibbed it out easy though.
the rear quarter, boot shut and back panel were also high build primed. (the roof will be done next).
also while at the scrappy we got some door lock guards, and i fitted them to the doors, the old plastic window guide was removed (as it needs to be) and i welded up the old rivet holes, the pics show it ready for welding, but i forgot to get a after pic
i got some pictures, and so has clark, so ill upload mine, and the ones he sent to me of me priming, and ill let clark upload his so between both our pitcues, dont expect them to form any sort of order
clark preping the beam in the back workshop
doors ready for hole welding, you can see how crap it would of been had i not welded them as the new hole is close to one of the old ones
panel bare metal
etch primed

clarks action shots of me

Out of interest, Jay, what area of the tailgate did you spent the most time on? Was it to make it flush with the rear lights?

your right max i do i tore the ar$e out of my other one and this was the only other one i had.
i do have a new one though but its in the car which is masked off
might well come back to ya for some suits later on though mate
mark, i dont bother trying to aline the boot to the lights as such, as the lights can be moved to suit, its the body lines i was sticking to, such as the gap between the roof and tailgate as well as the C pillers, but it just wasnt right on the lower part of the light panels, and when it was right, it was out along the roof line.
clark has told me what he wants from it and if its to be out somewhere, where he would rather it was out, but i will have a go at it again to try and get a good fit all round, if not, ill set it up as clark wants and he can adjust it later if he ever wants to, but im hoping i can get a nice fit all round

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 25/11
mainly a picture update from me to show the little i did whist i was over the IOW
Spend a s**t load of time rubbing down the Zetec s brake drums.
Did it all by hand using sand paper.
New ford wheel bearings will be installed when beam is being built up.
After 2 coats of hammerite black.
Did the same with the zetec s beam but on this i used a grinder wire cup wheel to remove the stubborn rust.
Jay spent alot of time removing these worn out ford bushes. Ended up using a hack saw blade to cut them , burn out some of the old rubber , remove the center piece then chissel out the outter surround.
New rear polyflex bushes
Rs turbo lower arms were looking a little tired - so jay used the fly press to remove the crap ford bushes. Then used pillar drill to get the ford rivets off the ball joint. I have ordered 2 replacement rs ball joints & will be ordering power flex front arm bushes to replace the ford crap.
Jay used a nylon mallet to beat in the bushes after lubing the pin & bush.
more to follow when photobucket stops crashing

Pic of Jay spending ages preping the N/S/R quarter for primer
Beam all painted - bushes fitted ready for backplates etc.
I couldnt cope with jay letting rip so desided to take action by using a mask

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 25/11
It mounts to the mk3 exactly the same.
The only issue is the mk3 handbrake cable doesn't fit correctly into the zetec s drums.
So a spacer is needed or a few washers.
I don't think the mk3 drums fit mk5 beam.
