  , no mate, as the kids were off, so was i, so havent done anything to it, nor this week as the wifes car was in the garage waiting on a part (parts and labour under AA cover  ) so she had to use mine untill wednesday, yesterday i was over the workshop but repairing the compressor and i made up a bracket for clarks mk2 to hold the ecu.
things planned for today, clarks over sunday for 3 days with his missis, so i wont get on it untill thursday next week now, but in the mean time, i need to sort my own RS out, so updates from now will prob not be of much and not very ofton untill my rs is sorted, but that should only take a few days, but im setting aside a week as theres bound to be other bits and bobs i wanna do to it

yep im back from isle of wight - i planned to go over to do some work to underneath , remove old under body sealant and generally clean up rust etc.
Upon stripping the car down to a bare shell we came across more dreaded rust on the front floor pans and bulkhead. The common areas for a 21 year old car.

i will let the pictures do the talking - Jay's workman ship as usual is second to none. :)

Image
Image
Image
Image
Started by removing the engine , gearbox and running gear

Image
Image
Image
Dash out , complete car and engine loom removed

Image
Image
Image
Drivers side floor showing rust. Seam sealer removed to show holes through to the floor.
Image
New battery tray already showing surface rust

Image
Bottom of N/S scuttle panel

Image
Image
Wheel arches was mostly surface rust. But certain areas have suffered , lack of seam sealant and under body coatings have led to this. Also this car was once ran with big wheels and no plastic arch liners.

Image
After removing the seam sealant on the Drivers side upper bulkhead where it meets the top of the wheel arch. This revealed a hole

Image
Image
Image
Jay started by cutting out all the rot on passenger side front floor pan. We couldnt find any mk3 fiesta's up the scrap yards and nobody makes a pattern part floor pan for the mk3 so we had to create our own replacement panels :o

2nd half of the update !

Cleaning up the inner front arches was easy peasy when you have a belt sander and a angle grinder with wire brush attachment.

Image
Image
Cleaned up and now primed with red oxide. The following day i had them seam sealed using genuine ford sealer

Image
rebuilding the floor on passenger side

Image
Welded up - jay created panels to fit and bent them to follow the shape of the mk3 floor.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Both front floors welded and all sound deadening removed. Surface rust treated and primered.

Image
Floor welding completed ready for seam sealer

Image
Image
Laying new sound deadening after seam sealer applied day before. Hot air gun was used to get it in all the grooves in the floor.

Image
Image
Front floor finished ready for painting

Image
lastly i been wanting to clean up my scabby front suspension turrets.

Image
Welded up the strut brace holes. Belt sander came in very handy underneath removing surface rust.

thats all for now :aviator:

it is, i didnt wanna leave it for as long as i did, but i had a lot going on with old house, house move and what not, plus some other things, but its all done now so i got the time to crack on with it again, but soon it will be to the point i can/wont do anything else untill new year due to weather, as the workshop can get real cold and im not working down there when its like 2-3 degrees C like when i first started on it, and the gas for the space heater dont last that long, would do a 13kg propane in less than 2 weeks easy, and at £28-£30 a pop, its a bit expensive per month just for heating

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration

Postby jayrs on Wed Nov 30, 2011 9:23 pm

i have been doing a little more on this lately, not a great deal as i havent had hardly any free time so far, but ive done a bit on cleaning up the underside, the passanger side is stipped of all under seal and what surface rust was about has been delt with.
plus, as clark wants exhaust heat shields fitted theres been little point me doing much more untill it all came in (as he got it all new) but now it's all in, and its been sent to me today along with a few other bits as well as new studs for the heat shield nuts.

so i'll get them welded on, the floor all primed painted and undersealed, then that will prob be it this year unless i get the odd day and its not too cold.

will get some pics next time
