jayrs :due to a rear mounted ariel that was fitted when clark got it, he wanted it removed, but who ever fitted it drilled a hole about 15mm diameter, mabe even 20mm
I would like to point out that it wasn't me who did this! The guy who had the car before me did it. Here's how it looked the day I got it:
I did my fair share of hacking though front panel, bonnet catch removal, arches etc (although I only finished what had been started!)

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 26/7
there was a fair share of hacking mind you with the wheels it had to be done.
as for the arieal, it would of been too bad if they removed the front one and sorted the hole that it left, still the repair wasnt as bad as i thought it would be, but why they done a hole as big as they did god knows, maybe they didnt feel they could centre it right with a small hole

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 26/7
well done some more to the car, cleaned the under side up and degreased it, rusted treated areas i cleaned up as a extra, then hand primed the floor with a zinc primer.
i have only done the front section of the floor, its been a bad day today, while using the air tools, the air started to smell a bit funny and was stinking my eyes, went into other room and checked the compressor out, yep, comp $hit it self, big time, aint no repairing as they dont make parts for it no more, shame as its a hydrovane, and there bloody good compressors, but its a had a small oil leak (external) for a while but as parts for it are not serviced ive had to leave it, but today its was game over mind you, according to hydrovane, that model was in production from the mid 60's to the 80's, and i would of expected my unlce to of got it late 60's early 70's, so its had some use.
but its come at the worst time poss
plus the bearings in the brush bar of the hoover went and that jammed up while cleaning up
and a few little things through the day went wrong as well
oh, and my backs gone and im walking like a hunched up old man
all in all a toss day
anyways.
those that have followed will know that sections of the floor were repaired, and a part was plated from the inside, i wasnt happy with how it looked on the underside, and it was going to be sorted cut cutting out etc, but i thought fcuk it, if ya gunna doa job, just as well do it right, so cut it out and put it back to how it should be, the plate welded on the inside is still there as its too much hassle to remove it, and it gains nothing by doing so, so its still in there, although a small hole will be drilled through it and wax will be pumped in there to protect the new metal
i also found some rust on the chassie rail, nothing major, so cut it out and renewed it, bit of rust on the innner rail (as its a double skin part) but cleaned that up and welded new metal in
left the weld slight proud on the side of the rail a theres no need to smooth it out fully, the fuel and break lines cover this part anyway, but you wount notice it once its been seam sealed and then spray sealed (once i get a new comepressor that is )
the floor was buzzed off with a wire wheel and in areas a poly carbide wheel, all surface rust was removed and treaed after, and tbh all the bear metal was given a brush with it.
only effected areas were ground up, any factory pain that was not effect by rust, chips etc was left on there, after all whats the point of removing good paint to replace with other paint ..., but i tripple checked to make sure i hadnt missed any parts.
once dried, i keyed up the floor area with course paper, wiped it over with thinners and hand painted zinc primer on it, unfortunatly, in 1 area where some seam sealer was thin, it reacted with it, so will have to wire wheel that all out and prime, then rear seal, but i have to seam seal a lot of the joints anyway so its no biggy really
and the compressor, i mopped up the oil when i first found it, but took these just before i left, and more oil, i think its safe to say it $hit its pants
so new compressor needed, this is gunna hinder the work i had planned for the car over the next coming weeks as im commited to other things untill sometime in sep so theres no money for a new compressor for a while unless something changes but cant see it
almost scared to use any more tool on the car now incase it wants to claim them as well, it already owes me a grinder, compressor, hoover and im sure something else too

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 4/8
cheers guys.
yeah was gutted nomad, but im gunna strip the comp down when i get a new one, well over the winter, although theres no repair kits or spares for it, im hoping a pneumatic's place might be able to come up with something, im assumeing the seals will be O rings or such, and maybe some universal bits, or parts from other comps might fit it? if not, at least i tried.
talking of comps, i have been given one , its another 3 phase jobbie which came out a workshop, its a upright one too, only down side is, although it worked when my dads mate put it in his shed years ago, the roof has since leaked so the motor might be fcuked...., but its worth a shot for a freebie.
its a open drive set, so std thing, belt driven, so if the motor is shot, i might have a 3 phase motor which i could use, if not, i deffo got a single phase one so could convert it, and hope that motor is up to the job.
next prob is getting it to the island, as its up london way
still, at least its a start to replacement compressor

erm, mk3 ones, yeah i think theres 4 in the workshop, thats inc the ones i flatterned out and put under the concrete floor
there will be one spare, a white one, but its off clarks car, its a mk3.5 one so your have to speak to him about it.
and clark, you were eyeing all the s**t up in the workshop, and loving it, im surprised you disnt cream ya pants mind you it was a good laugh when when we were talking and it was decided we needed some round thick metal disck for the axle stands, and 30 second later i walked in from the other oom with a couple , your response still makes me chuckle
frag, if i can get this new comp over here asap and it works, it will get more loving, even if i run out of time this year (as in when it gets to the point its too cold to paint) i want to be at the stage the under side is done and finished, inc rear wheel arches, inside painted, engine bay painted, and with any luck all panels on too, as im guessing i will have till mid oct maybe end of oct before its too cold to work in there, but if the winter moves in sooner, then less time, thats why this set back with the comp has come at the worst time poss
oh, and as for the jig, i havent got engough bits left to make another

Awesome work as usual, Jay! Shame the Hydrovane let go, but like you said it's done itself proud. I was pissed off when the motor in my comp burnt out, as it's the kind of thin you buy once and then never want to spend any more money on

couldnt agree more, that said, i didnt pay for my compressor, as really, it belongs to my uncle, but hes 86 now, hes got no use for any of it no more so basicly said i cant have/use what i want, but its deffo a expense i could do without, and if this comp ive been given works ok, then ive saved my self the expense, for now

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 21/8
update.
ive finished cleaning and preping the floor, and ive also welded on the studs for the heat shield.
this threw up some issues as the mk3 never had heat shields, and thus, there shapped for the mk3.4/mk4 so some reforming was required here and there.
also, becuase of the above, i dudnt have the floor shape to go on for the location of the studs, so the gear selector was bolted in, and the exhaust was hung to determine the route.
the exhuast was hung close to the body without the rubbers in place, so when its hung right when the cars finished, there should be more than enough room for it, although some tweeking may be required, maybe..., but when it comes to that point, i shall attempt to smoothen the front one out a little more, as it was quite deformed when it arrived to me so looks a bit messy, but over all the shape is there, just needs a few kinks smoothed out here and there.
plans are in place to collect the other compressor from the mainland next week or the start of the week after, depends how much the ferry is going to rip me off due to the bank holidy..., so no spray sealant or stone chip can be put on until i have it, but you will notice from the pictures, the rear arches havent been done yet, but there next on the list, and will be done later in the week.
anyhow, some pics of the progress so far, doesnt look a great deal, but your be surprised how long it take to clean and prepe the floor, and then hand paint it , even doing the studs for the heat shield took longer than i expected it too , still, its progress so its all good.

Excellent work mate. I can imagine how long it took!
The shields were available on 92-94 Mk3, but it looks like some of those shields you have were Mk3.5 rather than Mk3, so considering that you've made it look factory.
I've got some of those weld studs from Ford. Did you use an attachment on your spot welder to fit them?

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 21/8
cheers guys.
clark ordered the shields through work, and i believe the ones he got were all that were available.
as for the studs, i mig welded them on, not ideal, but its all i could do, so each one has 4 small tacs around its base, there primed, and there be seam sealed around the base when im back out there thursday.
i did want to spot weld them on, but couldnt use my spot welder for it, i did think about buying a spot welder from ebay, the gun type that plugs into a arc welder, i would of had to of altered it a little on the rod side of it, but still didnt know if it would of done the job or not?? but for the amount of studs i had to do, and the cost of the gun, coupled with the fact it would prob never be used again (if it worked), it wasnt worth it, i couldnt even find anywhere on the island i could hire a proper stud welder from, so had to mig them
still, the plastic nuts screw down ok, and hold the shiel nice and firm, so thats all that matters at the end of the day

as above, and depends on the grade of stainless, but yeah, dissimilar metals can react in funny ways
anyhow jony, i wont be welding mild to stainless on his exhaust, the T3 down pipe is steel, all i need to do is weld a flange on it from a T2 down pipe, there for making a T3 down pipe, marry up to the T2 system

clarks had, or it came, with a flexy welded in and the T3 pipe welded to it, so its all one bit from the turbo to just behind where the front seats are, so the front and mid section is all one bit

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 28/8
update, pics at the end, so skip down if you cant be arsed to read
underside is done and ready for 3m sealant and stone chipping.
yes the seam sealant is messy, one tube i was using was old and on the turn, and was sticky as fcuk, but were not going for show winning finish on the floor, were going for max protection.
also, studs for rear arch liners have been welded in
also, a nasty little hole was found next to the brake pipe bracket in one rear arch, so i cut a section out and put new metal in, i forgot to get a picture of the hole once i cut the rust out, but such as life, its all done and solid now.
also on the other side, although not rusty, the bracket wasnt spot welded very well, so it got some welder treatment.
all seamed sealed after too
the inner arches were primed, and the top turret parts got 4 coats of gloss white, the hole will be masked off when the arches get there finishing coat, so it leaves the insdie of the turrets nice and white.
as i still dont have the replacment compressor, its not finished, and ive had to play with my plan of action for this car, to keep progress moving forward on it rather then just stop, so today i done a few odds and sods, but the main thing done was the new scuttle panel.
i removed the old one, preped the under side of the new one, and rattle can painted it gloss white, mainly for the fact its a bit of a mare to get under there with a spray gun, but when i paint the engine bay, the under side will be keyed up and ill give it a spray, if i missed any bits or its thin towards the back, it wont show up due to the gloss white i put on today.
the edges of the scuttle are brazed from factory to seal the join, i too brazed the joins, i went a bit over kill as im sealing the complete joint, it looks rough in the pics, but i rough gound it after and primed it, ill finish it later on with a light skim, or if clark wants it to look like the joint is there still, ill carve in a line to give the look of a join.
all bare metal primed for protection, normally i would of primed the complete scuttle, but as said, im not ready for that stage of the car really, so that will be done later.
again though, until i get this compressor, im a little limited to what i can do in a way, the plan i had for the car was to do certain bits in stages then move on, for now though, im going to have to do a few bits arse about face, just to keep the progress moving.
but some things done during this off time will pay later with saved time, such as preping the edges of the new panels for spot welding (removing black paint and priming with weld through primer)
painting the insdie of the new wings and front panel,
preping the engine bay
preping the inside of the car for paint etc
mostly bits i didnt want to do until something before was finished, as i dont like doing too many things at once without finishing the job before, but i got it all noted down on my white board
anyway, a pic of it as it stands now.
