The Recaro Fiesta - the rebuild begins
Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 25/9
knuckles :It will be a exspensive layout for the paint but it will be worth it for the end result. If you skimp on the quality of the paint then I don't need to tell you how the finish will come out.
Hence why I went to the best place for paint and bought one of the well known brands.
To spray the car I went for 4 litres of diamond white & 2.5 litre container of fast hardener.
I may be left with some left over but better that then run out half way through painting. Which means mixing more up which may be different batch & different colour !
Nah i wont, i was toying going for waterbased an clear and maybe a BMW or MERC variation of white...
most paint suppliers round here dont wanna sell 2K/autolaq style paints due to all the rules...
but Diamond 2K is its spiritual coat so what to do..
I reckon 4ltrs should be enough(if jay paints it in the warm atleast...no runs/re-paints [ERRR] he skimping on electric an heat ) but as you say best to be over than under.
Real looking forward to seeing her in paint fella, spurring me on something cronic this thread

Don't go for water based - more hassle than its worth. Clear coat can be a tricky thing to do right too.
If you go for a non standard colour if will also de value the car some what when and if you want to sell
Give me a pm if you want to go for the proper 2k paint
i get a pretty good discount at morelli's by me as im a trade customer

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 25/9
water base is good, but from what ive been told, is not the sort of thing you wanna be painting at home.
im told its a watter based base, and a solvent based clear, sort of contradicts the whole getting awya from solvent dont it , but i could of been told bullcrap, ive never used it, never plan to use it, so cant be sure.
there will be heating when painting, ive already spoke to clark about this in depth .
your be gtetting me some paint for the xr2 in the future clark

I disagree mate. Loads of fuss is made about water based and I really don't get it, as it's a doddle. I assume a lot of painters were scared of it because they didn't know anything else. I spray DuPont Cromax in the same gun I use for regular two pack and even lacquer, even the same nozzle which is absolute no-way in painting terms but I get a lass like finish from the gun. I just lay the base coat on wet like you would with 2 pack lacquer, rather than dusting on like regular 2 pack base coat. I don't have any issues and it's so much less hassle than 2 pack as you don't have to worry about thinners, and washing the gun can be done with the garden tap
Water based is usually just base coat anyway, the lacquer is still 2 pack which never made sense to me

does seem a bit silly dont it to have a water base, base coat then a 2k clear dont it
im gunna have to get some water based stuff at some point and give it a go on something see how it turns out, as ive never used it before

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 27/9
tiny update.
even though im ill and got a chest infection, i restudded the rear arches this afternoon, they need a fair bit of prep work before paint still, but ill do that when it comes to it, but at least now, once the front end is on, i can fit the body kit up, and start drilling holes for it before i start preping the car for paint.
before this pic, i had to dig out some old studs, as well as some stuff that had been used to stick them on its last car
holes preped for glue
stainless stell screws wraped in tin foil to save the threads from glue
finished
will back back over to the car saturday as i just as well carry on to the workshop after dropping my daughter horse riding, as im just over half way to the workshop when i drop her anyway, and it aint worth dropping her off to go home, to go back to pick up up at 5.
so i just as well do something, i dont expect to do much as im coughing like mad, so might not be any painting done, but i can at least crack on with something

easy fella, theres prep work to be done before i slap the paint on
gotta seam seal the drivers door yet, take all the black paint off the new reaq quater (as its crapy) and etch primer that, take the roof back and etch prime that, prime the car, scratch my balls, smoke fags, sctracth my balls again, get the heating and extraction up and running and thats before i even think about mixing paint

Looking good as always =) Whats the best way to get the old studs out without damaging the surrounding plastic?
Ive heard of people slightly melting the plastic to the stud will ease out?
top work

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 27/9
yeah i think people have done it that way.
i use a drimmel to get int there and take some of the plastic away from the bast of the stud, then easy it out, sometimes its rips the plastic a little, sometimes it dont.
when i first tried the restudding many moons ago, and is shown in the guide i done, i cut most of it out the way.
i havent tried warming the studs up though, but if i had a arch where all studs were broken and the arch was it self in good nick around the studs, i would try this, but the ones i just restudded were a bit rought, and 2 studs had broken before, or been cut out by there last owner and the back end bonded back on, so they were a tad rough, and i had to dig all that out before i could prep it for restudding, but they wasnt to the point they couldnt be restudded.
use a decent glue, and it wouldnt matter how the opening ends up, and i bore into the arch with the drillel so the glue forms a sort of root in the arch, but if you can leave a decent ridge (as it would be as std) and force the glue under that ridge, then its gunna be nice and solid in there.
but remember, later on when things get tight, the stud isnt going to be trying to pull out the arch, its gunna try and spin in the arch when you undo the nut, hecne the reason i 'root' the glue/stud in and put cuts in it so the head isnt round, and the glue has something to flow into, if you get...., have a look at my guide, your see what i mean
guide-to-re-studing-xr-rs-arches-vt143070/
oh, if your thinking of restudding your arches, get bolts that are 20mm long overall, ans thats the over all length of the studs

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 29/9
todays update aint nothing much.
basicly i leveled the car out so i can now fit the front end without the need to put it on 4 wheels, i got my dad to help me with this as i couldnt lift the front end by hand and slide packers in but thats done now and is spot on level so the front end will now go on with it higher up, which is a added bonus for later on.
i preped up both rear turrets, masked off and painted the whole turrets this time, so now thats finished, at last
i also primed the remaining bits on the front end, basicly the parts i stone chipped,, so once i get the paint and the seam sealant, i can get that sealed up and painted, hopefully the same day, so that will be sometimes next week, maybe tuesday....
other than that, all i done was clean and set up my new spray gun, its a mini spray gun, i got it mainly for doing the body skirt and bumpers, so all the shipping grease type crap that was on it is gone and shes ready to roll.
and thats all i done today, i dont have a extractor, so cant carry on doing any further work with 2k paint fumes in the air, so i wrapped it up and left.
and thats the problem with this stage of the game, few hours then having to go home, still, when it comes to main car painting, i shall be hiring a extractor to get the fumes and paint spary thats in the air out of the workshop, might even hire it for when i prime the whole car too.
few pics though before i left.

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 2/10
todays update.
got the parcel clark sent yesterday, so today i went over, masked up the engine bay, seam sealed it and then painted it.
i also modded the front panel, as it needed a bit cut aout to allow room for the turbo water pipe that connects to the rad, as well as the jubilee clip etc.
first up masked it off, i didnt bother masking the top of the turrets as i knew i would get a better line by hand.
all seam sealed
while waiting for the seam sealer to dry off to the point i could over paint it, i set about on the front panel.
used a 2 inch hole saw to cut the recess out.
old V new
doing this made this part of the panel a little weaker, not that it would matter, but i wanted to tidy it up, and make it a little stronger too.
so i bent some copper brake tube, cut a slot, and sliped it over and silver soldered it on.
the flux is still all over it as your see in the pic, but i didnt have time to waste cleaning it up today, so left it to cool and ill chip the sl@g off next time and clean it up prior to painting, but i think it adds a nice little touch to the finish, your see what i mean once its cleaned and primed.
once that was done, and i had sorted a couple bits out in the workshop the bay was ready for paint
my spray gun dont like this paint , the mix according to the data sheet is 4:1:1, so thats 4 parts paint, 1 part hardner, and 1 part thinners.
now i aint no pro spray, but never in my life have i heard of a part mixed to that, even the high build primer was only 3:1 and 10% thinners if needed, and as the guy first said to clark when he got it, 3:1 mix is ok, i decided to do a 3:1 and added 10% thinners, and it took fcuking ages to paint the bay ok the nozzle i got is 1.4, and the data sheet says 1.5 needed, but it aint that much.
so i think next time, ill try a 3:1:1 and see how it goes, as it was, the recommened 2 bar (28psi) spray pressure was dog crap, so i upped that to 40 other wise i would still be painting now
anyway, the bay painted up ok, its got plenty of paint on it, i just hope when i go back, i dont find any runs or sagging.
pics of the bay.
thats it for now untill later in the week as far as the car goes, in other new, 4 halogen 1200W heaters arrived today, there get it nice and toasty in the workshop and warm the shell up nice for painting im sure, will report back how good they are later in the week

Cheers ben
My xr2 will be next, I put that on hold to do this one for Clark.
wouldnt mind building a kit car though, like a Westfield, i got all the plans for one too now that I would build for someone, but another project to this extent for someone else, prob not tbh

That's brilliant Jay. Something to be really proud of!
Does your own FRST need anything similar doing or is it already pretty good?

mins alright tbh, done it years ago, not to this extent though, as it didnt as much work.
i do have plans for some bits for the RS, but its fine as it is for the time being, but once the xr2 is done, ill rethink the RS, i might leave it longer, i might get it back in the workshop, were have to see at the time

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 2/10
cheers guys
go for it mate on the brake pipe bit, i take it you have had to chop some of your front panel for the rad to move forward?
you dont need me to paint the bay for ya, you got that to look forward to, degreasing it, sanding, sealing, priming, flatting, and painting, oh its great fun mate, i cant take that from you

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 2/10
yeah i might have too, ive a stg2 airtec rad in mine(well had its on top of me fridge now ) but trouble is with the T3 conversion its just too close imop, and i never liked the way the bottom hose sat so close to the cross memeber,,your mod might just be what i need plus with the crazycage front mount i got the rad needs to go more to the drivers side, get the air in the bay some more, heat soke/ dissapation are a factor im very keen on improving with the frst's bay.
And yup im dreading i mean looking forward to the bay prep & paint

Re: The Recaro Fiesta - restoration update 2/10
your love it mate
i would fit the rad all up before you take anything out and see what space you got to play with and do the mods to the front panel before you take the lump out.
the best bit about what i done to clarks is i knew from the old panel how much needed to be cut and where, but as you saw from the pic, the old one was cut too much, but when i cut that one it was on my parents drive way covered in tarps with the worst weather beating down you can ever get and it was fcuking freezing, and more likey to of been late in the day/night.
funny enough, the weather cleared up the day after clark went home...... that seems to happen everytime clark brings a car over for some work

That bay looks pristine. Be a shame to refit that grubby engine back in it
Leave some painting for me I be over in less than 10 days. I fancy a crack at the spray gun

Can't see the brake pipe mod being spoken about. Can someone link the post? I'm using my iPhone as decorating has put the pc out of action!
