Re: The ST170 Track prepped Mk1, Update, 29-01-09
So there I am, not a lot going on, so I decide to visit an old haunt, and here I am, and am I surprised at et another engineering marvel from Mr Scort's hands? Quite frankly, no. Nice to see a mix of old and new, especially the Mk 1 Fiesta, quite possibly my favourite Ford (slightly biased as I had one as my first car). And with those arches, yummy. I must say though, the only thing that I'm not so keen on is the wheels tucked away i the arches. I reckon if the track was widened, the wheels would come out nicely, and the handling [in theory] should be greatly improved. But there again, it's hard to knock a project like this
Well done mate, keep it up!

Thanks guys!
Pez, wheels are just catching the inside of those wheel arches anyways unfortunately. It's all adjustable though, so we could theoretically come out another inch or so! Good to see you back for a bit too!

Well a quick update!
We finished the car off a couple of months ago now. We got everything together and then road legal. So it's now fully MOT'd and Taxed.
We spend about 7 hours setting suspension angles and some testing at various places.
Alex(Capri) from Performance Ford magazine invited us to castle combe for a photo shoot. So we took them up on the offer. It managed to get onto the cover too!
Anyways, some various shots from the day:
One of Alex driving the volvo pace car! Dude, you've left the boot open!
What the photography the guy did was amazing, if you have the magazine, have a look at the difference in photograph quality! If you don't have it, go and buy one. The difference is amazing!
Overall, the car handles fantastically, brakes very well and pulls through the gears with ease.
We have some more fairly big plans for the engine, so watch this space!

Quality stuff Steve, thanks once again for bringing the car out for us, was a great day and I loved the car. Glad you enjoyed too and I hope you like the feature!
You guys really should see this thing up close, it's a remarkable creation and looks spot on from every angle! Roll on the big plans for the engine - I'm intrigued!

Thanks again Alex.
Ruishy, It is mate, both have changed significantly since they last saw the light of day. Once I've got my marriage out of the way, I will have some spare time and money to invest in both.
Mr Sphinx, It was indeed painted by myself! I think Alex was a bit bewildered with the amount of stuff we fired at him. It could have been a translation problem of course between the Somerset and Teh 'Shire' accents. I will bring an interpreter next time! Whens good to collect this car dude, I keep putting it off till the next week! Couple of weeks or something?
Jamie, Yes bud, we had an issue with one of the master cylinders. It's all good now. It's the trouble, when nothing on the vehicle is standard. Was a right nightmare to change too! LOL
Thanks to everyone else.

Re: The ST170 Track prepped Mk1, digi-dash update 20-07-09
Thanks to everyone for there comments.
We've upgraded the dash clocks. We did have a dash pod in there from rally design, which was completely s**t. We have replaced it with this piece of kit. Awesome thing that it is, its got some cracking features.
We had to fit some magnets to the driveshaft for the speedometer:
Sensor mount:
Ring to clamp around shaft:
In action:
Finally a photograph from RS Combe, on the Performance Ford stand. Thanks for the invite guys!

Re: The ST170 Track prepped Mk1, Wheels & Inlet fannymould.
Long time, no see, brief update!
Various things have stopped us playing about with it as much as we would have liked, in the form of Children! Hopefully though, we can get a bit more done to this, and a couple of other projects we have.
New wheels where acquired this week, they require a repaint, but hopefully will suit the car quite well:
We have also been designing a new inlet manifold, to allow us to run longer trumpets, and to increase the angle to match that of the inlet ports on the head.
We had one machined in a modelling material, so that we could just ensure the angles & fit were correct.
The manifold being machined.
We have a few ST heads, one of which we have been working on a few bits and pieces. Cat Cams will be fitted to the new head and manifold fitted at the same time. Then a bit of mapping, and see how it goes.
Hope everyone is doing well,
Regards,
Steve

Thanks guys,
Evolution-VII, From memory it is just a part machined to match the hydraulic end, copied from a ford hose, and on the other end a standard M10x1 fitting. It was five years ago though, so that's to the best of my memory!

Re: The ST170 Track prepped Mk1, VVT Controller 08/05/14
A small update.
Following the new billet manifold, we were able to make some billet trumpets:
Test fitting:
We have been keeping our eyes out for a controller that will handle the VVT system on the ST engine for a little while now. When we initially built it, the VVT was wired and mapped so that it literally advanced the cam fully at a given RPM point. This gained something ridiculous like 60 odd BHP in 200rpm. This is fine on the track, but doesn't make for fun driving on the road, or indeed from 'off the mark'.
Basically we pre-ordered a unit that we had heard was under development. http://www.motorsport-electronics.co.uk
The unit arrived a couple of weeks ago, so we've been having a play,
We connected the unit up, by piggy backing off the Emerald ECU the sensors required (Cam, Crank & TPS). We ran an extra cable to the VVT solenoid, so that we could swap back should we require to do so.
We have thus far just kept on the 'standard' ST170 cam map. The unit is completely 3D Mappable. Although I've had a spot of bother with the two laptops I usually use for mapping etc, one running XP to which there is no support at all, an one running windows 7 to which it just won't install. So not overly ideal there, anyhoo, I digress...
Initial drive of the vehicle was much smoother, but bogging down under WOT. Some small tweaking in the fuelling map basically throughout (baring in mind the car was initially mapped at full advance). About an hour or so we managed to get the fuelling MAP pretty much spot on again. I've still got some work to do on the ignition MAP yet since we put the longer trumpets etc on.
Overall driving experience is a fantastic improvement. Literally a massive improvement. Power is improved throughout. It manages to hold traction a hell of a lot better than previously. Bang for buck is amazing IMO.
If you've got one of these engines, I cannot recommend it enough. I've still got to Email the guys about a couple issues. But certainly nothing serious.

What a fantastic bit of kit! I think Ryan really would have liked something like that when he was running his ST170 lump in the Bonus.
The trumpets are smart - was this because you couldn't find ones the exact length you wanted? Are you going to run them with or without a filter?
Be good to see more updates from you, Steve! How's the Escort for example?

Smo,
Yeah, I'm glad we didnt go down the road of locking it now. It's made it completely different.
There were a few reasons for the billet trumpet thing! The main reason was a test bed. I know a chap who works in the engine build department of M-Sport, we were chatting about the Jenvey trumpets. He mentioned they had been falling apart during racing. The main trumpet is spun alloy bonded to a machined base plate. The glue was basically falling apart. I asked him why they didnt just make some billet ones. We made a set for the fiesta as we needed some longer ones anyway. They worked a treat! We sent a couple sets up the M-Sport where they used them on the 2400 fiesta in a few rallies. With complete non-failure & a bit more power to boot. So I believe they are now running billet ones throughout. Or at least it's on the cards for the immediate future!
Tell me about it man! I just seem to be playing with other peoples stuff at the minute. I've got the Mk2 Escort coming out to play very soon. My Mk4 will get done one day. No rush! Hard to meet a happy balance of spending time with work/kids. The car will remain the same, the kids won't.

Nice update!
Good bit of kit that vvt controller, m-tech have come a long way from their early megasuirt build days! Is the ecu still picking up the crank signal ok with it being split? I know omen ecu's throw a wobbler if you split it.
