TreColl's Mk4! - The Final Update!?!

Postby trecoll on Tue Dec 09, 2008 6:08 pm

Seeing as Im getting a bit active on here again now...
I think Ill transfer accross my Mk4's project log and try and keep it updated!

Right, well, this is my project thread for my 1997 Mk4 1.25 LX!

Before this, I had a mk3 1.3 XR2i Rep which unfortunatly would have cost too much to get through its next MOT and wasn't worth carrying on with.
I had a look around, for insurance (being young) I needed to keep to a relatively cheap car to insure, I managed to find this red 1997 Fiesta 1.25 LX.

Here are the pictures that were posted on the AutoTrader Ad...
It had 77K on the clock, and a fair service history and MOTs.

After a few problems, I finally got the car on 1st April 2008. I left it alone for a while, whilst I decided what I wanted to do with it.

A couple of weeks later I transfered my Escort alloys from my MK3 onto this, Immediatly I knew that I like them more on the MK4 than on the MK3.

Image
Image
Image

I needed new tyres but couldn't afford to buy new, so I managed to find another set of the same alloys on ebay for £5 with better tyres than my own.

Whilst I had spare wheels I decided to spray them in Gloss black...
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

I also managed to get of a high level brake light on ebay
Image

As I was show season and Fiesta in The Park was approaching, I bought a set of show plates.
Image
Image

And also got some red tail light tinting spray and euro'ed my rear light cluster.
Image

After FiTP I managed to find spare to time 'incorrectly fit' my brake light. (With added 'Fiesta 16V' cover, ghey I know [currently missing!])
Image

I bought for my old car, these little white LED strip lights from Halfords, and managed to find somewhere to fit them to this car...
Image
Image
Image
They don't actually look too bad :P

I then bought some Vinyl paint and started spraying the rear of my interior black.
Image

ORIGINAL BLUE:
Image
Image
BLACK:
Image
Image

I added a boot popper and whilst the center console was out I sprayed that black too
Image

I also meshed my front grille
Image
Image

Which will be sprayed black eventually (Done, photo to be added below)

Debadged the boot too...

Start:
Image

Then (Please remove if neccessary) :
Image
That last letter is an R ... honest! :D

Image
At this point, was planning on leaving the 'HI' there and just removing the 'FIESTA' bit, but decided against it...

Image

Then I removed the original fiesta badge aswell...
Image

2nd August 2008 - Pre-Ford Fair clean!
Sexy reflection pictures...
Image
Image
Image
This pic shows how much it needs lowering (also, my tyre size lol)

And the back badge, again! :P
Image

------
After Ford Fair, I decided to spray my dash black too... Striped it, primered it, and sprayed black.
Image
Image

Then, I had to put it all back together (minus one air vent, will explain why in a minute...)
Image

Couldn't stand having blue vents and had ran out of black spray, so found my can of .... Radient Red and did this...
F@cked up me N/S one though so need to sand it a re-do it tommorrow... :(
Image

My main problem is, it was meant to be temporary, but its kinda growing on me now  ... Really dunno what to do here! (Update: It's staying as it is)

Since I had the car, the engine had always been burning loads of oil, then the tming belt slipped and bent a couple of valves :( , after running the car like this for two weeks, I found time (and friends :P ) to change the engine for another 1.25 (insurance purposes)
I was rushed through the day, due to problems...
This is the only photo I remembered to take. (NOTE: not me in photo.)
Image

I smoked my headlights too...
Image
(They have since been re-done and look darker.)

-----

I will be building a computer into my boot build and moulding my new screen into the dash (where the standard radio goes)

I have waited this long but have now got all the parts required to get the basic system in place!!

Anyways, heres pics of the parts I have.

Image
IDE CD-ROM Drive (for now) and 40GB Seagate IDE (PATA) Hard Disk Drive (for now)

Image
Very basic (£30) Nvidia Graphics Card (powerful enough for its use though)

Image
Assortment of cables...

Image
And a Belkin 10M bluetooth USB Dongle...

Image
An M2-ATX 12V DC-DC Power Supply with Shutdown Controller

Image
A HP Mother board with a P4 1.7Ghz Processor, and 512MB DDR2 Ram.

And my latest arrival (this morning :P )

A 7" Lilliput VGA Touchscreen...

Image
Image

OOOOO...

:D

Will update as it gets put in!

-----

Got round to freezing my butt off today!

Removed the remaining badges and added the new black one into its new position.

Image

...I WISH...
Image

and the new badge...
Image

(All photos taken on my new phone, so no more annoying lines down the middle!! Yey!) [previously, ones with no line were digicam]

Just 2 coats so far, not laquered (would be too shiney!)
I layed 2 coats of plastic primer down, after going over it with methelayted (sp) spirit.
Finish isn't that bad actually,

How did u smoked your head lights? Do you have to take them apart and how do you do it

Yes, you do have to take them apart, I have written a guide on my site, which can be viewed here

I'm going to copyright that badge position

TBH, I didnt know you had a badge there?

i would change those wheels though i dont think they suit it

I agree, I put them on cos they are better than steelies, and looked better black (imo), once I start work on the exterior, I will probably be changing them for something else (not sure what yet though)

Keeping a very close eye on what you're doing with the PC install. I never thought to get the parts seperately - one company wanted £1500 for the system!!! How much did that little lot set you back (excl HDD and CD, I can tell their recycled :D)?

Looks good!

lol, How? Mobo is recylced too, Via the bay of e.

Costs so far (as to what I remember! ;) )

Mobo., Processor and RAM £45

The PSU with shutdown controller was around £45.

The screen I got off someone on UKFN cost me £85 - but I need to get a new touchscreen overlay as this one wont calibrate properly :( (Ordered: £50 incl. P&P from a UK supplier!!)

Graphics card, £30.

All the other parts are just ones I had lying around!

Nice, I might embark on something like this at some point in the future.

I can tell they're recycled - if you were buying all new components, you'd get a DVD drive instead of CD - second its beige, and still has rails attached from when it might have been in a case of some kind (probably Dell, if not HP I'd hazard a guess at). Those seagate 40gb hard disks were commonly used in Dells and HP's as they were incredibly quiet due to the rubber shroud

Correct me if I'm wrong - have you broken a Dell or HP for parts?

Lol, bit of both really. Yes I have broken many Dells and HPs.

Yes the CD is out of a Dell (smarty pants :bonkers: )

No the HDD aint tho... Its from... actually I can't remember! I have about six random hard drives lying around and that was the closest one to me when I made my nlite version of xp!

I have today and next week off for christmas.

So today I started fabrication of the screen, no pics, but its startin to p!ss me off already!! lol, screen is about .5mm too big to be able to fit into the 1.7din hole I made!

Am gonna have to make it slightly larger, which, unfortunately means Ill have to cut some of the decals off the heater controls, which Is what I was hoping i wouldnt have to do!! :x

But, it has made me wonder whether I can make the heater controls controlled by the PC via USB or Serial ;) lol (am already looking into it!!)

No pics for this update!

Fort I'd give another update.

Been very slow on the fabrication front, but should see it finished in next couple of weeks.

Spent this weekend, fitting electric windows.

I know have front ZS door cards fitted (red version)
ZS A, B & C pillar trims.
ZS Sill trims.

And rear door cards and shelf supports waiting for next weekend.

Then ive found a paint that Is almost exactly the same colour as the ZS black, so I shall respray my dash that colour :)

Also got a black carpet waiting to go in, but that wont be for a while (will be when I change front seats)

Got a mk5 centre console, but cant seem to get it fit, think it may need different framework.

Also got new front component speakers - not that I can use them atm :)

Gonna pics soon :) - probably not til alls in though

------

Few pics I've just taken... It's been snowing, can you tell??
Dunno what the random light patch is (in most pics) must have been a snowflake

The door cards :)

Image
Image
^ Get a sneak preview of my heater screen holder thingy... its in primer at
the moment :P

And some random snowy pics :)

Brushed away some snow to show how deep it was. No fancy camera angles here!

And my road... You cant even see the difference between pavement and road

Alls fun though!

Seeing as you've got that far, you can probably make it to Bluewater

Nice update! The ZS doorcards really suit it. I think the MK4/MK5 have slightly different floorpans so you'd need to modify the brackets for the centre console. I like what you've done so far!

Yeah the bracket for centre console seems to be different. I'm going to see Adam_B (who I bought it all off) in march (to buy his cat-back :D ) and ill change the brackets over then too.

Thanks for comments

Electric windows were ok, hardest bit was getting the looms through to the doors as I only have the smaller grommit.

Ill see about bluewater, if I am there, the PC wont be running cause it'll mean that I couldnt be bothered with the old motherboard.
It's refusing to boot with no keyboard, despite all the bios settings being correct :( Plus I think I have killed the ram (no screen atm, so cant see the errors lol)

EDIT: Its nearly march, he gets his new exhaust on 14th so will be shortly after then (poss. weekend after)

Ok, Update time!

Carputer is now in and running, still needs a few tweeks but the basics are there and I have music again!!

Will upload a video of it running later but here is a pic of what I see on the screen (home screen page)
Image

Went and got my new wheels this morning, and after a few problems (need a new set of wheel nuts) have got them fitted.
On the first picture, I forgot to remove the flourescent light filter....
Image
Image

The front wheels are only just legal (ET36 7J*15")
Image

Front wheel: - Not straight, but is straight down on it from above....
Image

Image
Gonna get some stuff and do my calipers red and drums black...

What do you guys think? Should I put on the black OZ decals (one on each wheel)
Image

Havent driven with them on yet but having a look they shouldnt scrub, also they have the same size tyres as standard ZS wheels, but they have a higher offset...

Oh and for anyone who wants to know, they were refurbed and painted in Ford Mercury Grey.

Looks good! I've seen far worse spacing believe you me! Carputer looks really good - will certainly be looking into making one so will probably be bugging you about the necessary modifications to the dash to accept a touchscreen. What are the bootup times like? I was experimenting with Autoroute and a Tomtom GPS reciever too :)

Mike, Its on the cards, hopefullly before FiTP!

Nick, Ill look forward to the messages lol Boot up times is not quick at the moment, as I have literally just bunged on an nLited version of xp, only boot up mod is /noguiboot in ini file. Plan to do a few registry tweeks which will help, also will set the front end program as the shell so will shave a few more seconds ;)

Seems to be playing up today, gonna have to have another look tommorrow at the connections that I have soldered on the pcb :(

Yeah, Im getting a positive response on the stickers, so will probs go with them!

Nisi, I will be selling the old wheels.
They are 14" off an Escort Ghia MK6, sprayed black (obv.) Fitted fine on this, and on my mk3.5 however the camber on the 3.5 was slightly out so two of the tyres are worn on the inner edge.

Two tyres have 5-6mm and are worn on inner edge,
Other two were bought in november (end of) and are like new with 7-8mm i reckon.
one of the new ones may have a slow puncture though, but will be able to confirm that in the morning.
[It had a screw in the outer shoulder which I have now removed, but it didnt seem to go right the way through so it might be fine...]

Also, until they are sold they are being stored outside (not that it will affect them much  )
