tuning a 1.8 zetec

Postby Fiestasi-Andy on Fri Jan 24, 2003 12:58 pm

i've been offord a 1.8 zetec (130 bhp) to replace my 1.6 zetec, what are the best tuning parts to get, i already have a chip from my Si, so i will be putting that in my ECU if its the same code.

so that should add abit more pull.

what else, what BHP etc
My Bad!

Do not swap the Si chip into to the 130ps engine.

Mods...

- Air filter
- Cams
- Pulleys
- Gas Flowed / Polished Head
- Throttle Bodies

Cams £320
Pulleys £80
Headwork £580
Throttle bodies, ECU, injectors, inlet manifold £2500

Around 160bhp, total £3480 exc fitting.

FRST engine, £500 chip £200, intercooler £300 = 160bhp for £1000 exc fitting.

hmmmmm.....

£3k would get you a 2.1 Zetec Turbo from Ian H with 300bhp potential.

Add another £700 or so for a hybrid T3 and a GRS and you're already at 280bhp.

Throttle bodies sound nice, but pound per bhp they are outrageously expensive.

You really don't need to even contemplate doing headwork unless you intend to push more than 250bhp.... Also, induction kits are a waste of time.. you will lose power.. biggest con on the planet... cams, throttle bodies and decent management will give you the biggest power boost (other than turbocharging)..

More like 180bhp... It will help a *lot* if you get a different exhaust manifold (and obviousely drop the cat).. Ashley Exhausts and Hayward & Scott are both producing zetec manifolds now (4-2-1 tubular), which are giving some real decent power increases.. (especially if your exhaust system has the cat on the downpipe)..

Excitement will make him save quicker :)

We've got a mk.2 escort in at the moment.. 2.0 zetec (toughened up a bit).. 45mm throttle bodies running on Pectel T2.. runs about 205bhp with similar torque figures..

They're good fun.. but are very high-endy.. If you want better round town stuff, contemplate turbocharging.. (however turbocharging does work out marginally more expensive due to custom fabrication)...
