Tuning getting warmer - mapping time?

Postby XRoriginal on Sat Jun 30, 2007 6:08 pm

Hi,

I'm in the process of fitting some kent R cams, a flowed head and a 4-2-1 to my RS 1800. Other than this it only has a filter and exhaust. I've emailed MSD asking if its worthwhile to have it mapped now as the mods are becoming warmer. What do you guys think? :)

1) Is it worth it - what I mean is that essentially it's still a 1.8 zetec with just a few light mods. Would an of the shelf chip (i.e. superchip) do the trick or, given the mods, is there a considerable gain to be had from mapping

2) With the above modifications in mind, would you reccommend I upgrade other parts of the car (it is running standard RS brakes and suspension - though have been renewed).

Cheers guys :)

well it depends on your circumstances. if you have the cash for a mapping then id say do so as in standard tune the ecu is pretty conservative and with your mods itd maybe add 30 hp. but mapping can be quite expensive so its up to you

Get it mapped mate :) It's the only sure-fire way to keep the fuelling accurate for best power and engine longevity. The Engine will definitely need more fuel to keep up with the better gas-flow through the engine

a stock ECU will generally cope with an extra 10% of air flow which generally means air filter and exhaust mods and sometimes maybe even cams! however you have gone a step further with the modified head so i would say its time for a remap as dependant on the extra air flow, you could be flowing upto30-40% more air dependant on the head used!

on top of thast its better to be on the safe side as well as get the most out of your engine ;)

Cheers guys - You guys have serious cars so I respect your advice. :)

As pricey as mapping is it seems in the long run it'll be worth it. Oh well, know one ever told me horsepower came cheap

Thanks again fellas :)
