Turbo question

Postby S2 on Mon Mar 24, 2003 11:41 am

the turbo on my car ( 1988 escort rs ) was smoking a bit when i bought the car. as the weeks progressed the smoke got worse when i had been driving the car and stopped. A few people told me the turbo was on the way out.

Now it has stopped smoking on override but when i am driving it throws a bit of smoke out like when i change gear. It doesnt constantly throw smoke out though like when it is just ticking over.

At one point the turbo was practically dead, when i was driving normal the car would drive fine but when the turbo should kick in it felt flat. this got to the point where it wouldnt boost at all and it would occasionally backfire.

But then the turbo started boosting properly again at lower revs, when i got into third gear it wouls still boost but not like it used to. Occasionally it goes flat and you can feel that the turbo isnt there.

The car was rolling roaded before i bought it and on the notes that i got it says the actuator was weak under pressure. So could this be the cause of it not boosting properly??

also any ideas on the smoke? would it be better for me to get another turbo or mine reconditioned?

Any help appreciated

thanks

Imho you should take it to a reputable tuner asap to rule out the possibility of the turbine shaft seizing, which can damage more than just your turbz.
