Max M4X WW :bud-weis :change in circumstances means i probably won't be having mine live mapped now.
Why? Is it not allowed to be driven
smart arse
i wish i could drive it ,but the wheels are taking longer than expected , so i can't drive it at the mo,been about two weeks now

Paul R :On the plus side at least all your problems are being discovered and sorted.. no ones perfect. I remember Ahmed discovering loads of little little problems when it was first live mapped.
ahmed found a few probs with mine also one was with my valves so he couldnt finish the mapping. in the end had to rebuild whole engine as a certain company didnt do it right!
its best to get every problem sorted to make sure all is mapped properly. problem is we all have budgets so id tell msd how much you want to spend and when it reaches that to get in contact with you.
save you the shock of when they just tell you out of the blue. ''yo sir, 2000 squid for that, if you cant afford it we'll keep the car and blow it up on the track on ND!!!!''

Paul R - I have Spals, not Kenlowes, and they certainly can blow! I connected them up the wrong way round the first time, and when they came on, I walked round the front of the car and they nearly blew me over!
Gav - I probably should give them a max cost, need to speak to them today anyway (I'm getting good at making excuses for probing phone calls ). Thanks for the confidence-boosting post mate!!
The actuator and rod should've been made by now and been put back on the car, so hopefully Kenny will be making horsies with it today

Yeah that's the monkey Paul. I've seen loads of twin-fan setups with the fans on the cooler, plus Radtec sold the cooler with the fans, so I thought all would be fine The fans are extremely close to the radiator too, so there won't be as much of a pressure drop as there would be if they were several inches away. It might just be a fuss about nothing and they'll be ok, I won't know till I've got it back. No-one's answering the phone at MSD, so Kenny's either out successfully mapping away, or it's in a ditch and I'm about to get sued for a poorly-maintained vehicle

i have exactly the same as you, my fans are pretty much touching the rad tho, so hopefully they will be ok!
after properly fitting my cooler tho i feel that radtech have sent me out the normal cooler and not the one to your measurements, hopefully this will work in my favor for cooling, however i now have to do what i didnt want to and trim the bumper!
as for radtech being trustable.... well i'll not reply to that comment!

xrsi - I got one that didn't fit the first time, but sent it back and made sure I got one that did. I just wasn't willing to ruin all my plans because they'd sent something that wouldn't fit! It buggered up my timing, but I wasn't going to give on that. I wanted an un-molested bumper at the top, so had it all done again. Yours should've been to my design Never using them again.
Update 4
Okie doke, I just got hold of Kenny and there's good news and there's bad news. Good news is he was out in it last night. Got the newly-made actuator and rod fitted in the evening, then had it out on the road till gone 8pm. There's a problem with boost though, and it seems it could be down to my custom actuator bracket:
The 90 degree kinks in the bracket are causing it to flex. So as Kenny winds preload onto the actuator to increase the boost, the bracket gives a bit, reducing boost. In first and second gears it only makes about 10-11psi, whereas in 4th it'll make 14psi. I said on the phone it's almost an accidental method of controlling boost and traction in the lower gears, but I'd rather it were done electronically than by a bit of metal flexing! It would be great if I could guarantee it would flex in the same way over and over again, but I fear it will lose it spring and stiffness and end up lowering my boost in time.
So first things first he's going to perform a pressure check on the inlet side of things just to make sure there isn't an air leak. It's a brand new intercooler, brand new hoses and inlet gaskets etc so I should be covered there, but you never know, and I'd much rather it were an air leak issue than this bracket, but I don't think it'll be leaky, and neither does Kenny. He needs stable boost (it was still fluctuating in fourth gear coming on and off boost) to be able to map it through the rev range under load, so he can't complete till the boost's stable.
Also, he said it's a bit "interesting" braking from speed, as there's not enough braking going on at the rear, and the front brakes are trying to pick the back wheels off the ground Might be time for some rear discs soon I think....
But otherwise he's happy with it. The clutch is fine, so my concerns brought on by all the recent ratchet discussions have been softened. I'm quite confident after the last phone call, and can't believe there's just one more day of waiting after today and I'll have my baby back, and she's going to be shouting!!

sailorbob :Do you know if when MSD map it whether they change the engine displacement or re scale the load tables?
Something I can ask them when I collect. I know very little about the computer side of mapping (that'll be quite a big bit then ) and would very much like to learn more, as ideally that is part of my career plans. He had to write a base map to begin with, which I presume means he couldn't start from the FRST base map, so I'd be inclined to give a "yes" to the first part of your question. I'll no doubt hang around for a chat on Saturday to find out all the gory details

Mmmm, it's always good to know exactly what people do. I compared a 270bhp Escort Cosworth chip from a very well known Cosworth tuner with the standard ecu and despite the claims in their literature that they changed spark and fuel the main tables weren't altered at all!

That's just crap, it's so low ripping people off by selling things they *probably* won't know/find out about. I'll get all the details I can about it, as I desperately want to learn about engine mapping.

Rawli - I remember that day so very clearly, my whole outlook changed. Turned it all around in an instant, and boom! One year later I'm on the road with petro turbo power  It's been one hell of a wait. The day I pick the car up marks the 51st week since the TDI let go.
Another quality update - HIC rang up today and the car is now agreed at a value of 4k, but I've pushed for more, as the guy just agreed with my rough guide of 4k that I put down as my estimate, so I think it could be valued higher. Very pleasing to know it'll be under agreed valuation for when I collect it on Saturday, and that it won't be valued at 1.5k as it was until half an hour ago!!

Both good and bad news like you say. What about asking kenny to remove the bracket, and have it copied by a local sheet metal workers, but in much thicker metal? Or have little braces welded across your 90 degree bends to toughen it up?
If you could have a straight bit of metal strip, welded across the ends of the 'consetina' then it would be uber strong.
Just a couple of ideas to throw around
Sound like all is going well so far, which is obviously great!
Thanks
Matt

Yeah webs across the bends would indeed work, but taking it all off where it is would be major hassle I think. Not sure, but Kenny's got a good head on him so I'll let him think about it and call me if need be
It seems so strange that I've been babying it around at 3,000rpm and no positive boost, and the tiniest of pedal pressures on the accelerator, then last night it was blasting out at 14psi in fourth gear! Go baby go! If I give you a lollipop can you wait at the mouth of the MSD and follow him in the Matt Mobile to get some footage?

I know the matt mobile is a fire breathing animal, but i doubt it'll keep up with a 14psi ZT

I should fooking hope not, otherwise I'll have a nasty truth to come to terms with!:oooh::lol: Any news on the pedal box, or has your nose not left the hunt yet? One eye on the screen, one in Auto Trader

Looks like you wont be able to take it on saturday, as i need to keep the car in one piece incase the rolling shell is wanted.
The search is always on! Just the need to cash so i can make a stoopid, off the cuff, all heart no mind decision
Thanks

Ah of course, didn't think about that. Well my clutch is ok for now, but I'd better mod the clutch pedal before too long. Third gear can't be selected in haste...
You're damn right! Much fewer things to fix on a kit car, and they're so much lighter to play around with jacking them up etc, and no damn trim to take in and out all the time!!

Update 5
Great news! Well, after comments from people like Gav (Bic™!) I rang up to tell Kenny not to bother with the 2-stage boost, as it's a little bit of a gadget (though potentially quite useful) and adds 100 quid to the deal. The 1 second silence before he answered said it all...he was right in the middle of wiring it in
The great news is that the boost issue was nothing to do with the actuator bracket, it was all down to the AMAL valve....the AMAL valve that Scort very kindly sent  baxtered doesn't want me going faster than me so supplies broken parts, very nice (Love you really Steve ) So Kenny's swapped that for another valve and all is well :D:D I'm very very happy now, and he'll be doing the final stages tonight, so it could be ready tomorrow. I don't think I'd be picking it up tomorrow if it is, as I planned to catch a ride down with my parents on Sat, but it's possible.
He asked if I wanted any kind of boost spike (eg peak at 18psi and hold 15) but I've opted to keep 15psi as a maximum for reliability reasons. Getting very excited now!

I don't reeeeeeeally know, for instantaneous acceleration's the only bonus I can see, but I'd rather it were constant for the feel of it and reliability. 15psi is a good level to be running it at IMO, so at 15psi it will remain!

RS_Rawli :why would you want a boost spike?
thought they were bad things,
id also be pissed off if i was giving it full out and it slowed down when it came down to 15psi
Whuuur? Don't you ever read people's boost values when they post them?
My old car was holding 14 but peaking at just over 15 on the old T2 and 1600 engine.
It now peaks at about 21psi and holds 20
The reason you have a peak is to pick the revs up when you put your foot down for acceleration (for things like overtaking).
When you say it's a bad thing you're thinking of turbo surge and overspeeding, where the turbo's bearings are going beyond their original tolerances.
Cheers,
Andy

Not really Mandy, he's thinking that having good acceleration then having it taken away from you would be annoying

WTF!
Sorry but that's codswollop!
When hitting 17psi or so you really don't have much time to be looking at the boost gauge and you can't actually tell the difference as it's unlikely hit the peak when you've already accelerated unless you're nearing top speed in 5th and re-apply the throttle from over-run.
You'll find out what I'm talking about soon enough - hope you have strong forearms heeman10, you're gonna need them
Cheers,
Andy

Cool beans, I don't think either of us were sure just how long the peak boost value would be given for. If it's just momentary then clearly it wouldn't make much difference, so I'm fine without it!
Funny you should say that, I was driving it in my dream last night and it was trying really hard to pull the wheel out of my hand! Ended up racing a Mk4 Golf GTI and a blue Punto on a road that eventually turned into a tame wall of death, with banked walls in a circle. I was catching them quite quickly, then the Punto turned on its blue flashing lights Gay!! Sounded awesome though, think I even took Rawli out for a spin

It won't fight you so much, just that with the standard rear beam and all the power going through the front wheels you have to hold onto it tight as the car will just want to carry straight on.
It's alot of fun really - will be even more fun when I sort out my rear beam
Cheers,
Andy
