Upgraded handbrake?

Postby BeemanFRST on Sun Jun 09, 2002 10:10 pm

Im goin to be gettin some rear discs for my z-s.
But i have a few questions.
Ive heard people sayin "you will have to upgrade your hand brake cable", why would i have to do this?
Can i use the handbrake when the reaar discs are fitted.
Do the rear discs act the same as the frount ones, as in when i brake all 8 pads close in on the discs?.
Or do the rear discs work only when the handbrake is pulled.
Any advise is welcome. :)

The brake bias may have to be adjusted mate. The front discs will work harder than the rears. The handbrake works differently with discs and drums. Not sure about the details of how but I am sure someone who knows what they are on about will let you know briefly. :)

The handbrake cable may need changing when converting to disks on the rear. Disk calipers usually have a different connector where the cable attaches to them. To pass the MOT the tester will apply a considerable amount of pressure to the handbrake, and if you botch the cable to get it to fit, the cable will almost certainly snap when tested.
If you've used Sierra 4x4/Granada Scorpio/Cosworth rear calipers (they're all the same) then you will need the Escort RS2000 4x4 handbrake cable. The Sierra 4x4 cable is too long. The Escy one is shorter, and you just have to connect it to the handbrake lever via a short length of cable. This is certainly what I discovered on the Mk1/Mk2 Fiesta rear conversion kit anyway.
