Upgrading brakes

Postby Sphinx on Wed Sep 10, 2003 9:04 pm

For all u techies, i was just thinkin, for that same price as gettin some uprated discs and pads, i could get some cossie brakes or similar.
So, i have a lot of questions. If i were 2 change my front brakes completely for cossie ones on mondy ones etc, what do i do/need?
I'm guessin the calipers, discs, pads and mounting bracket?
What brakes fit from other fords? obviously they'd hav 2 b from a car with the 4 stud fit, not the new 5 stud, but what about offset? does this make a difference with brakes? will the centre of the disc b different (thicker or thinner) or summit? Also, would it b cost affective because i'd have 2 buy brand new cossie discs and pads or even uprated (standard size, just better compounds etc) cossie discs and pads.
I know theres allot of questions, but i'd like to know everything about changin brakes b4 i buy n e parts. This has come about because i saw gadgets for sale post where he sold Stoned some brand new brakes ( i think calipers, discs and pads, although i'm not sure) for a really good price, and i want some good front brakes so i can go for the z-s rear beam and focus brake route in the future.

Cheers

Tom

Yeah it was a good price. But I havn't tried them yet. If they turn out to be crap and I die in a car crash you can feel free to take them off the wreck

Anyhow. Mondeo ones will fit as long as they have been machined slightly like Gadgets ones. Cossies ones also fit but use washers to space things out which is a bit naff.

ST170 brakes are 300mm and apparently fit with a space plate made up. These would be awesome and the ones to get I reckon

Alternativly Escort RS2000 brakes are an upgrade but fit straight on. These are 260mm discs so not massive, but defo much better than the standard 240mm discs.

I got a set of these on mine and are fine for my current power of 150bhp but I wanted new ones for the future bhp.

The brakes I got off Gadget are jaguar x-type calipers with focus st170 300mm disks, no spacers or anything needed, just drill out the mounting holes to 12mm.

i paid £130 for my callipers then paid £108 to get them reconed.

£100 for some drilled and grooved disks

and £60 for some standard ford sierra 4x4 pads.

i got my disks and pads cheap if ure paying retail id expect to pay about £70 more

+ £30 for some braided hoses

id budget for £500 or unless you can find a cheap way of reconditioning the callipers or risking it and leave them.

The 300mm conv requires 16" wheels a good way to go if u got the room but cosworth fits straight on with longer bolts and a few spacers.

hey they can stop a huge sierra they will be fine or ure fiesta

Sphinx, the calipers include the extended carriers, bolts, pads and everything, all brand new for £200, and new discs are bout £100 from ford. All that is needed then is some braided hoses and they are perfect.

Nope, the MATCHING caliper for the 300mm disc ( ie the Focus st170 caliper ) is already done on the anchor brackets, so no brackets needed as Dan says! :D

Dan bought a 300mm set from me and stoned bought a 278mm kit! :P

Are those 300mm kits duel metal Gadget, so alloy bells and metal discs?

Cos otherwise 300m metal discs have got to be pretty heavy?

I bought the washers, but ended up using a nut, as i thought it would be better, and the bolt going through it, would be more secure.

Yeah should be cool, but if the donar car has not been running for a while then it would be wise to get the calipers reconditioned.
