Uprated Springs For G-Max Shocks - ANY RECOMMENDATIONS???

Postby Matt_Steves on Thu Jul 25, 2002 11:48 pm

Evening all.

Right basically my dilemma is this:

My MK3 is fitted with G-Max Shocks and Jamex Uprated & Lowered Springs.

The springs were on the car when I bought it but I fitted the shocks about 6 months ago.

Basically the car has always been very hard. It isn't too bad in the corners but could be much better. On certain road surfaces the car can be quite uncomfortable to drive and it hops along the road if it is especially pot-holey.

I'm running 195/50/15 tyres on my 15" rims at the moment which will be changed to 195/45/15's in the next couple of weeks which should bring the car a little lower down and in theory improve handling. I'm also prepping a 1.6Si Rear Beam with Anti-Roll Bar and am preparing to fit that in a couple of weeks too. The car is lowered 60mm at the back and 40mm at the front BTW.

So really what I'm after is suggestions for a set of springs I can buy. I'm after something which is basically comfortable to drive around the town roads, giving a nice smooth drive but when I give the motor a bit of stick around the country roads when I'm taking corners hard I want the suspension to take me round positively, safely and firmly.

I've heard a the names of a few spring makers being thrown around the air but is there anyone that you guys can suggest to help me???

Thanks a lot guys.

Cheers.
Matt.

I've heard nice things about H&R springs in the handling vs comfort department, but if you are after a 60 mm drop you cant be too picky when it comes to both subjects. Thats why I'd never go for anything as low as that. It looks wicked, though...

My personal choice when it comes to lowering springs would be Eibach or H&R. I just dont know how well they'd match your G Max shocks.

You said you are getting a rear anti roll bar... are you going to uprate the front ARB (or get one, if you dont have it already) to match it? Note that uprating the rear ARB without compensating at the front will make your car oversteer. Taking into consideration the natural fez ability to oversteer on liftoff and the way its rear beam reacts to bumps and holes, I think that could be fun (but slow) on a track... but quite scary on the road.

Handling wont be good cause you fitted 2 different spring rates and sizes..

You are best fitting the same size all round.. I would recommend Chassis Dynamic Springs.

Well the springs were on the car when I bought it. Jamex did a kit that lowered 60mm at the back and 40mm at the front but that doesn't bother me.

I'm happy to just have a 40mm overall drop so prices and opinions for different spring manufacturers would be apprececiated.

As for the ARB's:

My Fiesta was originally a 1.6S and came fitted with the front Anti-Roll Bar as standard which AFAIK is the same ARB on the FRST, as is 1.6Si Anti-Roll Bar I'm about to fit. I know the rear ARB is the same dimensions as I have an FRST rear ARB in the garage ;-)

But as I said before I'm generally after a comfortable ride yet still have good cornering performance.

The shocks will be upgraded to Konis in the future (starting with the rears) but unfortunately that is not at the top of my priorities list at the moment :-D
