Van Aaken...do they know what they are doing??
Hi I am posting this on behalf of a mate. He's having a turbo conversion on a Zetec-S with Van Aaken. They kindly melted 2 of his pistions while "professionally setting up" his car.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had problems either with turbo conversion or with Van Aaken in general.

they had a van aaken converted zetec s at interpro it wanted to go on the rollers and the opporator wouldnt let it due to problems he thought it had !
for the money why ?
i hope there replacing the pistons
really should be forged items with a turbo and if they aint why are they melting them running at low boost

depending opn what conversion they do would determine what type of pistons they would use.
the low boost turbo conversion only runs at around 7 to 8 psi if i rememeber correctly. hence using std pistons.
try keep the abusive opinions to a minimum people, have heard of a few sites being shut down recently due to 'over zelous' opinions on outside companys.
sorry for treading on toes Ade

7-8 psi is not low boost
a FRST or ERST runs that as standard and they were made with forged mahl pistons and fillet rolled cranks for a reason !
low boost would be a couple of psi

er Craig why do you insist on having to argue?
i was merely quoting that the van aaken 'low boost kit' runs 7 to 8 psi.
thats it, theres no opinions invovled!

Well bugger me backwards for christmas cos the 2nd generation t series rover turbo engine didnt use forged pistons but ran at about 7psi...
The original engine used forged mahle pistons and is good for higher boost applications. The "chocolate" pistons used in later engines had a tendancy to melt under higher boost (12 psi+)
That is why i'm using the earlier engine with the forged pistons.
Nothing to see here...

In a word, the management simply throws a paddy, and without a lot of work to modify the fuel and advance curves (which I'm of course sure Van Aaken have spent time and money researching), there is simply no point in trying to release power through this method.
So, my question is, exactly what changes to the car's management set up do VAD make to the Ford EEC-V management?

Mark Si :They put a pretty sticker on the ECU saying 'Proffesionally tuned by Van Aaken Developments'
I cant' believe that's all they do ?! They woudl surely be liable under the amended consumer rights acts if that were the case, specifically the sections relating to fitnees for purpose.

not everyone has had bad experiences with VAD.
have heard alot about their diesal optimising treatments over the past year.
had one chap in with a corsa td who had had the car optimised and had returned with 20 od bhp more, he couldnt rate them highly enough.
