What are the best road tyres?

Postby moondustka on Thu Dec 17, 2009 9:08 pm

Im pretty please with the way toyo proxes t1-rs perform. The best tyre yet on my car, they wear a little quickly, but grip in the dry is pretty damn good!

So, is there anything better - I was going to get new wheels and toyo r888s, but then I found out they were heavier! So going to stick with road tyres!

What's the best?! I'e heard Michelin pilot exaltos are good? expensive and unattractive tread pattern but meant to be like glue!

I'm using toyo's at the moment and they are pretty good. When i asked for somthing better alot of people were saying goodyear eagle F1's (i think thats the full name).

the eagle f1s are beter in the wet, and around corners and are more grippyer, only thing is there about 10 - 15 quid dearer each, but they last a long time

and suprisingly had more grip on the ice/snow than i expected not turned completly in to slicks

this is the gsd3

http://eu.goodyear.com/uk_en/tires/repository/EagleF1GSD3_2/index.jsp

this is the eagle f1 asymetric
it is made up of 12 contact area services instead of the tradional 3 so more tire is weight bearing around corners, instead of 2 out of 3 taking the weight, increasing friction area and thus improving grip around corners

http://eu.goodyear.com/uk_en/tires/repository/Eagle_F1AS/index.jsp

and then you have got optigrip this is a one of a kind as it physicly changes tread the more you use it, so that when ur becomming low, 3-4mm you have more drainage channels to disperse water,,, inovative stuff

http://eu.goodyear.com/uk_en/tires/repository/optigrip/index.jsp

i ad product showcaes with allof these tires when i worked for goodyear

Maybe on normal cars, but the way my brother and I drive ours, no tyres last too long. We found both the eagle f1 and the proxes T1-r wear out quickly, but they provide good grip. I wouldn't have said there was a noticeable difference between the 2. On a FWD car with a Quaife ATB, tyres get scrubbed pretty quickly if you hammer round corners and roundabouts because each wheel is losing and gaining traction alternately, very quickly, helped greatly by the tyres too, but makes them wear fast due to being a soft compound.

Unfortunately, soft compound means it wears quickly, and it's pretty impossible to get a hard compound tyre that grips well!

That said, I'd be interested in the goodyear at £10-15 more, but where can find them at £70 a tyre??!? I can get toyo proxes in 215/40/16 for £55

And which is better the eagle f1 asymmetric or the GS-D3? As according to the links, it would appear that the GS-D3 is. 'safety under racing conditions' swayed me into thinking it was better than the asymmetric that states: 'a giant leap for confident cornering'.

both the gsd3 and asymetric are made out of stronger rubber compound, and the asymetric has nano tec and carbon deposits built inside it,

as for losing tread when booting it, all deepends how u rag the car i know my other halfs got a heavey foot and theyve with stud her booting abilities,

the only difference is that the asyletric has got better contact serfices so is technicly ment to help give optimum traction around corners by making sure more surface points are incontact with the road as the tyre flexes on corners, where most grip is lost,

again its down to personal preffereance, i have never found a fault with the gsd3s in 4 years ive used them, and ive had 3 complete sets of tires now, the asyms ive never personally fitted to my car but customers with porsches, jags, astons, have all favored them, as for prices, ill find out how much they will cost from hi-q, may still get discount :D

i found this for the asymetric

goodyear game

http://www.miniclip-games.net/games/3357.html

and this very informative presentation video of how the tyre works

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M98eweo5920

both of which goodyear produced, they rant and rave about this tyre :D

also at hi-q 195/45r15 gsd31s where 120 pound per corner fitted for normal customer, with 40 % off and fitting them myself did all 4 for 240 which is the main reason why i baught 12 tyres in all, also the thing with goodyear is they get their tyres shipped over from china and america from there suplly plants, and can some times leave you waiting for months, i had to wait 8 months for a set of 4 once, ordering direct through company and that, so ied ring goodyear direct if you are to buy some tires, and get them done throught hi-q online, unless you can get the tyres cheap of a local dealer, then fair enuf, my next set would have been asymiterics, cant think if they do 15s, will check now

i tried the michelin exalto's (195 50 15)...
Very good for queitness but other than that they were absolute crap

I have tried a mass of all other tyres in that size and it always comes back to 1...R888!
I tried the "gs" compound (soft) and lost 3mm (only come with 5mm new!) in the space of 85miles.
The "gg"(medium) compound is a lot more of an all rounder. Iv done just under 5k miles and still have a good 3mm on the front.Good in the wet. Excellent in the dry. Just between 15~35mph you get a droning noise lol.

Seriously if anyone attacks the uks roads like me trips are the only way.

trouble R888s is they wont fit  I'd have to get 15" comps.

195/50/16s are just too big a profile..

I run 215/40/16s at the mo.
