What breather tank with a ZVH turbo?

Postby Quantum John on Mon Jul 22, 2002 1:07 pm

Those with ZVH turbo's,
Can you tell or show me what breather tank you are using. The reason being I have a oil breather tank very similar in design to the GRS one where both the rocker cover outlets, the throttle housing tube, a small K&N air filter and a return to the sump all join the one tank.
Look at http://www.grsmotorsport.co.uk/fiestars ... thers.html

While blasting around Castle Combe at the weekend I had to stop because the engine was blowing so much oil out the small K&N.

What has everyone else got and have you tried it round a track?

Cheers
John

P.S. Engine is in good condition, compression test was good but it was getting very hot.

Im interested in a breather kit..

Mine chucks loads of oil out of the breather filter.. in fact this is my only oil usage on my 1.6cvh.

Whats best advised, GRS, bailey or what.

When i was on a RR i saw the oil vapour etc coming out of it, i was shocked something cronic

Daz or Darren Hodgeson is the guy I got my current one from. It's a great piece of workmanship and the finish is fantastic but I think the tank size is too small for my 2.1 ZVH. When I replace it, cos I've gotta, with a larger one it's up for sale.

Come on, what do the large cc people use?

Spec R eh? Now what I want to know is how it is connected up. Me thinks connecting up both the rocker cover outlets to the same tank might not have been a wise move.

Anyone tried the Mocal catch tanks, as shown on page 23 of the Burton Power catalog?

cheers john for that, glad youre happy with it, i thought it was just a fiesta turbo engine in your car.
if you decide you want a bigger one, just let me know, i will have it made to your specification.eg width/ depth etc
the one i have got has got two breathers on it, one from the standard air box as per normal and one with a small k&n filter on, only one pipe goes from my breather to the left hand of the rocker cover, the drain pipe on the breather will then be fitted with a T pice and fitted to the right hand pipe but nearer to the sump, it also has the same vac tube as yours, but mine will be mounted on the left, original place.
as i said a few days ago to fiesta jim "it's your money mate you decide what you want", not the dealers.
cheers mate.

Heres the polished Mocal 1 litre oil breather tank fitted. The cap doubles as the breather, letting air out to allow the engine to breath. I'll let you know how well it works after the weekend.

£69.99 from Burtons. They do red ones too. And you can get the pipes to exit either the Left or Right hand side (specify when ordering)

Theres a guage on the other side, which shows the oil level.

Graham, looks lovely :D

Im getting one myself, when my Zetec goes in (i am of the opinion my zvh engine is g@y ;)). 16v needed!

Basicly I have completely re-designed the instalation of the breather system on mine.

Basicly, block off the vac hose conector. There are two "rocker cover" pipes, one goes to the cam cover breather on a zetec, the other to the crankcase. The bottom one goes to the sump (below the oil level), and the final one, that people traditionally mount a filter, goes to a mocal catch tank, and then to a filter. :)

If anyone wonders how it will work, due to no vacuum sucking air thru, when the engine is running, and if the engine is breathing, there will be pressure in the crankcase/cam cover, which will naturally flow to an area of less pressure (ie, out the breather filter to atmosphere)....and to do that it passes thru the breather system, separating the oil from the air. Sorted :Q ;)

Mine's even simpler. I just run two breather hoses in to the catch tank, one from the rocker cover, and the other from the collector on the front of the block.

Worked a treat on Sunday, just a tad of condensation in the bottom of the tank. :D

Those big american V8's sometimes don't use breathers ?
They just mount a k&n instead of an oil-cap either side?

Can this be right ?

If I can find back the picture i'll post it.
dunno why two oil caps either ?
should all run to one sump no ?

I have decided to make myown breather as i wanted one to fit in the spaces in the engine bay with big gaps ie where the airbox used to be. So have designed this seperator and catch tank in one unit. This will fit where the air box used to using the exact same rubber mounts. This also has a level glass and drain plug at the bottom for easy access and minimal oil vapour in the engine bay.
