The longer the valve clearances go without adjustment the worse they sound each time, and are never as quiet again.
The best plugs to go for are Motorcraft or NGK - no power gains.
I mated an 8v 2i exhaust to the standard manifold and it made a little difference.

Mine doesn't burn oil
I've not had the car long, dont know when the valve clearances were last done roughly how many miles between doing them to keep it right?
I'll have a look at the exhaust option
cheers

Blow it up?
How about concentrating heavily on the styling - you could teach yourself engine bay colour coding and replacement HCS parts, e.g. rocker covers, cost buttons and are easy to find. You could even go into business selling them, since no-one seems to do anything like that???
Try a K&N and a Powerflow exhaust to improve the sound of it, but it'll always be a 1.0. BTW a 1.3 engine is a completely straight swap, although you should switch the carbs over at the same time, but again, it's a straight swap. Same for a 5sp gearbox if you don't have one, too

I had a 1.0 HCS, best things you can do is just keep it running, use a thinner oil, and adjust/check the tappits every 3k or 1 year,
you could get a bigger carb or somthing, like a Xr2 Carb, but the main thing is to just keep it running sweet and it will give you no trouble at all, thus allowing you to save for a better car
just don't spend thosands on styling, becuase at the end of the day it is 1.0, that money could have got you a better one!
the HCS is a bulletproof engine i ran mine dry of oil for around 50miles and it did it no harm, errr sort of but then again I don't own the car, but i do see it around so it must be still working
So no one by a H Reg 5 Door 1.0 Popular Reg H114-HLJ!

Neither!!!!
Why do you think they make proper lowering springs?
If you read the suspension article on the site it'll tell you why.
If you want to save money, buy a haynes manual and a set of spring compressors and fit them yourself.

Would like to see a pic of the K&N It must look a lot better than that stupid thing! Thinking of getting one of those ecotek things too. Will probably paint the rocker cover when I have it off to do the valve clearances, guess it gets pretty hot, need special paint??

Ye, OMP do special spray paint in all types of colours, and it aint dear.
I have a 1.3 hcs, cause the 1.1 blew up!
Powerflow exhaust and piper x filter, and a 1.6mk1xr2 carb
I get 110 (on 17's)out of mine and it drives 140 miles 6 days a week.
I get very little trouble out of mine, just the standard (things gettin old and worn).
Hope this helps.
I spend alot of me dollars on styling and ice.
See my pics in the members gallery under Irish fiesta,
