i've got a g reg 1.0 and the top speed i've got out of it is 80mph. is that average for a 1.0 cos i've heard more is normal. Any ideas how i could speed it up if i can?!?, and sensible suggestions pls.

yeah mine would do 100 flat out. Just sold it.
The thing that will do it the best mate is a real long run - say 220 miles or so on the motorway.
Change the oil,plugs,clean out the carb and make sure the tappets are set CORRECTLY
at the end of the day though mate there are good engines and not so good ones

i'll do that next week at college then. doesn't checking the tappets involve quite a bit of work??? like taking the head off or something like that??? as you can see i haven't really been listening at college.

Nah just the rocker cover - a few 10mm bolts, and a 13mm or 15mm or something like that, along with a set of feeler gauges, to adjust the tappet clearances.
Mind if I offer you a tip? Make sure you use a ring spanner not a normal open-ended job to do the tappets, as they can snap off easily

Oh yeah i remember how to do that now.
just slide the feeler gauges around until you get a tight fit but still some movement.
