what geabox for acceleration in 2.0 zetec mk3fez

Postby lowridermk3zetec on Fri Apr 27, 2007 3:06 pm

hi everyone I have a 1800xr2i but this month im doing the 2.0 zetec conversion but im gona change my gearbox as my current one feels a like its gona break very soon! so im thinking could I use a 1.1box? for quick acceleration? I know this may not be that straong and my top end will be poor but id much rather have a quick 0-60 time than boast stupid speeds on the motorway! So if you experts have anyhelp or suggestion or even comments let me know all help is appreciated many thanks

use the same one thats already in there. a 1.1/ 1.3 box will blow at the slightest hint of 130bhp. the 1.6si gearbox can barly cope either, so stick with your surrent one and the ratios should be more than fast enough

I would say stick with a 1.8 Zetec gearbox also.

I use an Orion 1.8 LX one (which I reckon must be pretty similar to the XR2i 16v and RS1800 gearbox) and in my opinion it's perfect for a Zetec engine. I've been out in a couple with 1.6 Si gearboxes and they're just TOO short to be enjoyable.

Orions are abit longer than the rs boxes I am led to believe.

You can use a 1.1 box, i have seen it used a few times and still working after a year, depends how hard you drive.

although you want good acceleration, the 2.0 has a lot of power and even with the 1.6 si box, the ratios seem abit too close.

Just because I keep talking about definetly doing it doesn't mean I'm actualy going to do it.

It may well be the case, but it's a lovely gearbox nonetheless :D

Came with the engine I'm afraid, which I paid £75 for in total.

Not sure what speeds at what RPM... I only know naughty speeds possible in certain gears

Next time I'm somewhere that conditions allow, I shall find out for you :)

I use 1.8 Diesel box ('89 Escort) on my ZT. It's has quite longer gear ratio than my previous 1.4 CFI box -> now 2600 RPM @ 100 km/h., 5-th gear. 1-st and 2-nd are short like old one. 0-100 km/h = 7,2 sec. (it's Orion not Fiesta, 1110 kg. without driver)
Sorry for my bad english...

I'm running an 1100 box however mine is the later IB5 type. It is solid as a rock and can deal with the power, it has been said on here before that the BC 1100 box cannot because of the smaller bearings it uses.

I replaced the Si box for the 1100 one to lower the engine speed for motorway driving. If you are looking for acceleration go for the Si box but you will eventually get p!ssed off with it cause at 4000 rpm it will only be doing 84mph.

Your best bet is to go for a long ratio zetec box or the diesel. The 2.0 has more than enough torque to pull the diesel box ratios with hardly any difference in acceleration over the Si's short ratio zetec box.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.
