What Head Work to do to a FRST?

CVH and Zetec tuning, suspension and braking mods.

Postby PhatMan on Wed Feb 06, 2002 8:29 pm

ok, here it goes.... (i knw very little about FRST's).. im fed up with the flood of `blue smoke` that piles from the back of my fez every time i boot it so im going to build a RS Turbo lump for it...

im gettin my hands on a RS lump and im gonna strip it and re-build it at work (ford).

so obviousley im going to take the head off, while its off i want sum `HEAD WORK`.. but what? skimmed? polished? ported? bigger valves? ( OMG i havent a clue [ERRR] im talking about  ) shall i have the block bored to 1.7? crank? flywheel?

i aint bothered about the cost cos im gonna do it all over the summer, ready for the autum, so i can spread the cost. how much will each of these things cost?

plz help sum1 [ERRR] i dont want to look like a total tw@t wen i take the head & block for work to be done    :???: :???: :???: .

You`ll have to check the bores-this is the first thing to do, if they are worn get o.5mm oversized low comp pistons. Don`t skim the head unless required-just strip it, get the face checked and pressure tested. New guides, for the valves, i recommend Burtons 214n stainless ones-they are very tasty and are shaped nice+flows well, 3 angle valve seats is a must on a cvh, and get a forth angle put on the valve. Get yourself a camkit, and just get the head flowed at a specialist, do not polish as this is just show and can cause running problems.. For the bottom end get it fully balanced(pistons, rods, crank, flywheel)+get arp rod bolts fitted. Skim the flywheel if its grooved.. Loadsa stuff can be done depending on your budget. Are u rebuilding it yourself??

once ive found a decent lump at a decent price im keeping it at work and ill be re-building it myself with help with the technitians at work (Ford).

So can i have it board 0.5mm and fit oversized pist rings or do i need larger pistons?

all the head and block work will be done at a local engine macheining company but it shall be stripped & re-built at work.

Nope you`ll need a new set of pistons £££!!, if the head is being flowed etc, make sure they have a good repuatation and know what they are doing with the cvh!!, a badly flowed head will wreck an engines performance.. Also strip the engine totally, oil galley plugs, core plugs etc and get them to chemically clean and sandblast the head(just acid bath) and block..

Snake may I offer some suggestions/ask some questions?

196 bhp@5680 rpm(max 7500-8000 rpm)
Q.flywheel or wheels?

-Lightened/balanced pistons, conrods, flywheel, crankshaft
Q.blue printed?

-Felpro head gasket
Q.What size?

-Stage 3 T3 turbo running 0.9 bar boost
Q.stage 3 for 0.9 bar, this is correct?

-Ported inlet manifold
-Ported exhaust manifold
Q.Did they fit locator rings?

-Collins twin piston d/v
S.If only 0.9 bar boost I'd recommend not running this.

-Ported/flowed head
Q.Again locator rings?

-Pace chargecooler
-Standard intercooler
-Custom intake system with Racetech silicon hoses
Q.I take it your the guy running inter and charge some one was asking about.

-Air intake temperature gauge
Q.what temp you getting on this?

1. Flywheel
2.nope
3.feck knows, normal size!, brought from Burtons-i think its from the american 1900 cvh.
4.Yup, going up when its back on the road, also going on the Zetec if i build it.
5.yup, they have lugs so they line up..
6.Everyone says different things about D/V, the twin piston doesn`t allow air in on idle, and have been told by the bloke who done the engineering work(used to work for the Porche gt race team) that its worth running one. Personally i would recommend one-only if it doesn`t allow air in on idle..
7. For the manifold locations-yup
8. Yup
9. was getting no more than 35oC on full chat, normal running it followed the ambient temp by 1 or 2 degrees, this should be lower/better when i`ve done my other mods to the system.
